Maj. John D. Twigga talks interest
ingly of the flood situation reported
at Fayetteville, N. C., where it is re-!
ported that almost as much damage
has been wrought as in Augusta. He '
states that the Cape Fear river is
a fearful torrent when it is on the
rampage and that if the water is as
high as reported it places the water !
well into the second story of many |
of the houses of the town and com
pletely submerges scores of smaller
buildings,
According to press reports the riv-1
er has reached a fabuluous height at i
Fayetteville. Maj. Twiggs, has been [
there during a flood when the river j
did not come within ten or twenty!
feet of the present height and he j
states that th e depredation wrought i
by the waters there must have been [
fearful.
Coming just at the time of the
greatest flood in the history of Au- j
gusta the people here who are ac- ;
quainter! with the situation are ex-!
pressing sympathy for the people of i
the enterprising city in the Tar Heel
state.
Fucrn ill is
GIVEN on TO
PUBLIC
The well at the Augusta Factory
has been turned over to the public
and water is being supplied to hund
reds from that source. Early y-es
terday Mr. Stewart Phlnlzy, president
of the company, placed the well in
the hands of Mr. Geo. H. Leitner so
that water could be distributed to
the public in a systematic manner.
People for almost a mile around
hav e been making the well their mec
ca and a great amount of water has
been supplied to th e inhabitants of
the surrounding territory. Th e well
was originally dug as an emergency
precaution to supply the engines in
time of need, but it is now being used
to furnish water to those actually
needing drinking water.

Clic.il LOST
ABOUTJ7S.OOO
General Superintendant Anderson,
of the Charleston & Western Carolina
Railroad, estimates the damage sus
tained by the company exclusive ot
the Augusta terminals, to be about
$75,000 in round numbers.
The C. & W. C. Bridge across the
Savannah river, 17 miles above Au
gusta, lost two spans in the flood and
about 2,000 feet of approach were
swept away. The bridge will cost
about $40,000, and the approach work
$2.00 per foot. r
Other great damage was done alcs.ig
the various lines ot the system.
The C. & W. C. track left the city,
on the upper or reenville division,
along the river bank and along the
canal bank. The river bank was lit
craily swept away from Red & Com
pany s warehouse, on McKlnne Street
to a point far above the divergence of
the trackage, and all this will have
to he filled in, or the tracks brought
to the city by another route.
Capt. Anderson said that he would
not evn attempt to stimate the dam
age to the terminals.
The Port Royal Bridge is not mater
ially damaged, and will be put tn con
dition again in two days.
The C. & W. C. railroad will be
able to operate trains over the Port
Royal bridge by Monday, if the water
