THE AUGUSTA HERAX.D
ROBERT’S ENEMY
IS PROBABLY
CAUGHT.
ATLANTIC CITY. N. J. In a wild
chase through the Tenderloin section
early today the police caught a man
suspected of the shooting of Charles
Boyle Roberta, the Baltimore million
aire and society man who was at
tacked as he rode in a wheel chair
with Mrs. W. S. G. Williams in a
lonely section of the board walk.
The capture of this man is expected
to solve the great board walk mys
tery. The police are silent concern
ing his Identity, nor will Chief Wood
ruff admit (hat the chase was con
nected with the Roberts case. One
of his detectives let the eat out of
the bag entirely. Great excitement
attended the pursuit
It Is said the man, who moved in
the same walk of life with Mr. Hob
erts and Mrs. Williams, was simply
infatuated by the great beauty of the
Baltimore society woman, will) whom
he had but a slight acquaintance,
and that he timed his effort to kill
Mr. Roberts with the return to this
country of Mr. Williams so as to di
rect: suspicion away from himself.
One of the strange moves of the
police was the attempt to close up
the cnßo to the public. All newspaper
correspondents who have been doing
active work on the case were called
to Chief Woodruff's office ami told
that enough publicity had been given
the case, and It was time for them
to leave as no more news would be
given out. It was even intimated that
they would he asked to leave town If
they continued to scud out the news
of the developments >., ~/e mystery.
Hofei proprietor* and business men
have brought pressure to bear bn the
chief of police on account of the
wide publicity which bns followed tho
episode, as they believe It has given
ihe town unwelcome notoriety, and
he believed that he could heHt servo
his own Interests bv attempting to
censor the news It did not take
him long to discover his mistake.
