Mr. Salinas suggested that the com mittee inquire whether or not the city of New Orleans secured aid from the government In erecting their levees. MR. POPE FAVORED DRAWBRIDGE. Mr. Pope said that If draws were put in th t , bridges th e river would then become navigable much higher than boats now run, and that in this way the government would become interested. He stated that he under stood the railroads were to drive pil ing6 along the river hank from Me Kinne street to the Hawk's Gully, and would erect a most substantial river bank for the accommodation of their terminal trackage. He cited the pe culiar conditions that now exist at th P mouth of Hawk's Gully, showing th e commission how the water from i that stream Is thrown out into the river, only to be forced bark In time of flood by the barrier of trees that lines the Carolina side of the river at that point. Mr. Verdery stated that in his re port on local conditions, ('apt. Carter, a civil engineer, referred to by Capt. Young, favoied reservoir* above the city. He said thal powerful New York capitalists were now Interested In the work of Improving and developing latent water power along the Savan nah river, and staled that the dam at Anthony Shoals would provide the largest reservoir of water in Amer ica. He also favored the removal of the eleetrle railway company's dam Mr. Tobin pledged his best efforts to co-operate in every way with the movement, and stated tiia' he was deeply Impressed with the commend abie spirit displayed by overy organ izatlon Invited to send representa ttves to the meeting.
