WKx ~ i ra S i J tr~ IP Jit. i-t I HT \ >, Aw* *• K^TyjsAA JAUGU QC t7 S 97 — ■ Our paper of Saturday anticipated the ■intents of the last northern mail, which ■ought us no additional intelligence, of interest, either foreign or do mestic. The ensav from the Boston H>n kee, oft the policy which the United Bates should observe between Spin and Bt revolted subjects, will no doubt prove ■teresting to the American reader. It Bcouchcd in energetic and dignified lan- Bage, and its arguments are urged with Boher seriousness and respectful mode* I EXPORTS. m Sometime since we published a com Earative estimate of the merchantable lvalue of Exports from Charleston, (s. c.) End Savannah (Geo.) during a period of ■io-ht months—from which we deduced ■he irrefragable fact that Georgia, than Bofjlfth-Candina, enjoyed a larger share of Bommercial importance. The Editor of BheSoutliern Patriot, however, is unwil- Bing to admit our conclusion, because, ■brsooth, w'e receive sonic of the *iaple ■products of South-Carolina into our mar* Ket. This is true enough—and it is also Erne, that South-Carolina receives, prp- Bbably, an equal proportion of the pro ducts of North-Cumlina, through the ■Santee Canal, and other sources. But Bill this is impertinent to the question. ■Augusta, has, and will continue t;> have, ■the local advantage of coercing into her ■market the trade of the uppei districts ■of South-Carolina. It is no matter how ■we enjoy the superiority, whether from ■the bosom of our soil, or from our local ■situation, or from both combined. It. is ■enough for us that It exists. j From Amelia Eland. The patriotic gentry at Amelia are their best endeavors to realise our ■ opinion of the character and event of the ■ expedition, aud to defeat the high-toned ■ panegyrics and laudable exertions of I their friendly advocates. 'Phis is indeed I Ungrateful. Late advices from this cm- Iporiiun «ts patriot ism, represent anarchy land confftton as the order of the day. I The executive, judicial, and military au thorities were aT in arms against each |other. and a speedy dissolution of (he | liberating army was apprehended. | Subsequent accounts state that Gover ■nor Hubbard died on the 19th inst Let Bhim rest—Peace to his ashes. Affairs Bcontinucd unsettled, and the spirit of ■contention still prevailed. ** The most effectual way to balk Men’s folly, is. to let them talk. Their ultnrst efforts can»-ot aiake B Our heads, or teeth, or fibers ache ” || The erudite Etlitors of the Republican, ■have again come forth with their unintel ■ligible jargon Their abusive epithets, I (which .they must have picked up from ■ some retail dealer in scandal) are equal Ily unmeaning to us as Miss Carabao’s language of the moon. The canine me taphors which so prettily ornament the sequel of their last production, have touch alarmed us, for, we. are really fear ful they betray evident symptoms of in veterate hydrophobia ! Let the municipal authority of Savannah look to this in time. The cases which they call analogous, and which they quote to justify the U. States in taking part with the revolted provinces of Ferdinand, are just as appo site as two conflicting elements. The cantons of Switzerland, were not only bound by ties of consanguinity, but Vy a aacred and imperative obligation al ways incumbent upon members of the same political family, to protect and assist each other whenever it became ne cessary. No such tie—no such' obliga tion is imposed upon the U. States, in her relation to Spanish America. The assistance which the crowned heads of Europe-have alternately rendered each other in deposing and re-instating their ' legitimate and illegitimate lords, is also cited, as illustrious examples , to urge us to action in behalf of the revolted pro vinces' And is this thodanguage of the “thunder and lightning” Editors of the Savannah Republican ? have they become ♦he indirect advocates of kingly magnan imity, of royal legitimacy ? and do they really believe that that policy which has so long made Europe the theatre of con ■ tendon and bloodshed—the very slaugh ter house of humanity—should be thi polar star to guide this Republic to tin nigh destinies which await her ? Wha purblind and ruinous folly ! Such futifi reasoning requires no farther considera tion than may be necessary to countcrac it* prejudicial effects upon weak and in experienced minds. It has been estimated that upon an t , verage of nine years, in proportion t population, the commitments for crime nave been in Manchester as 1 in 140} i London, I in 8C0? in Ireland, 1 in 1601 and in Scotland, 1 in 20,000. ■ POM THE CIUICNitLE.
