__AUGUSTA, The fallowing information was commu nicated in a tetter Tmos. l Qta scoot:, to the editors of . the Au guste "Chronicle, dated ' * FoKtr Hawkins, lift Bee. 1817. It becomes my painful duty to com municate tojou the sad intelligence that reached this .place «o jester-' ■ i A ‘discharged soldier (a person of ’«on«iderable ifiiorniaii»a) from Fort Scott, bt|» informed us, that a detach ment under the command of Lieut. 1 Scott of the army, was ordered- to, descend the river as far as the mouth of the Appalachieela, for the pur , nose of making some inquiries after • Major JMulenberg. who had heeu tome time expected at-'Fort Scott; with arms* ammunition, clothing &e. from Ncw-Orleans, for the troops under the command of Gen. Gaines. I The lieut. succeeded in coming u eross the major at. the mouth of the- Appalaehicoja with all the necessary articles, and took on board his boat 5 of the women, the whole or part of the clothing, and made his way for the Fort, but dreadful to relate, when having proceeded within 15 miles of Fort Scott, they were fired on from; the banks by the Hostile Indians, and the whole, (exclusive of 6 men and l ■woman) fell to rise no more—Four of the men that arrived at (he Fort were badly wounded, and the woman (from the best information,) detained a prisoner, fop (he purpose no doubt of answering their brutal and savage desires. The nuntber killed is sup posed to have been 50. Captain Clynch who also descended the river for a similar purpose, it is feared has shared the same fate, although not yet fully ascertained. ?; An express from Gen. Ja ksnn to Gen. Gaines, passed here a few days, since, and has for his own safety, been induced to return.and has just arrived. ‘When having gotten within 15 or 20 miles of fort Gaitws, distant about 70 miles from fort Scott he discovered a trail of 15 or 20 Indians, but suppo sing they were friendly, he continued on, but had not proceeded more than two or three miles when he discovered two men, who from appearances (af ter a slight examination) had just been murdered. This report you may re ly on, as a Mr. Fa.chal a gentleman of considerable information, was in company with him and has fully coo-, firmed it. The express Is-mrw in pos-v session rif col Q r * e ty' the purport of which will not shortly be known. The probability is, we shall leave here on Sunday next, If transportation can be procured which I think likely. I Teel a conscious pride (hat the emad detachment under my command wilt participate in avenging the death of our slaughtered brethren, as I have no dnuh but that gen.tirdne-’sfeelings are sufficiently roused to pursue them to the last extremity, or at least so far as prudence may dictate—l am fear ful erV this reaches you. Fort Gaines will fall, as it is only defended by 12 -or 15 persons, add from the success the Indians have lately met wltb r they Will he very bold and daring. Alarming?—Accounts from .Wurfres bnrough, (Tcnn.) as late as the 27th ult. (the credibility of which, nowever, we are induced to question.) inform us that Fort Scott was surroundedby a su perior force of Spaniards and Indians, - and that it was tearful the fort would be reduced, unless immediate assistance. was afforded. r* Gen. Floyd, in compliance with direc- - tiuns from our Executive, has ordered lirig- Gen. Francis Hopkins to detail .and organize from his brigade, without delay, 500 men to be held subject to the order of May Gen. Gaines. This force, is intended we-presume for the protec tion of our frontier, against the inroads of the Savages. Our advices from Washingfon-GUy, are to the 7thinst. at which time, says a correspondent, the business of legisla tion had scarcely commenced. Spanish American Affaire it seems, will occu py a prominent stand with the present session. Mr. Speaker Clay has already . introduced the subject in an Interesting manner. ; An- article under the date Os flague. Oct. 7, remarks, that “ tty negotiations earned »n at the Hague, between the king of the Netherlands ajid the United Abates of America, for the conclusion of <• a treaty of commerce, have been referred ‘ to their respective governments. -His Excellency Wm. iEustis, Envoy Extra .•nlinary und .Minister plenipotentiary ot the United State* of Americans a , boat to »ot out from he^ce“for France. »i-I will return in .the Spring; in -the \ oust awhile Mr- wUl .reside Bere in the quality ot.charge d’jtffuirs.” A lats arrival at New-Orleans states. Shut tipt ves , on been entirely abau fiwufcd by the patriotic forces. Their I brethren at Amelia, would do well to ! fellow the example, if they wish to es ■ cape merited chastisement. The United States’brig Boxer, com manded by captain John Porter, was lost on the 25-th October, off the South Bass df the ♦Mississippi River. Site grounded in .14 feet water—her de cayed situation precluded the possibility df saving her. No lives were lost.
