WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 30.

On last Sabba’h the Members of Social
[ L«dge, No. 18, -of this city, celebrated in
, a handsome and appropriate manner the
| festival of their tutelary Saint. About 10
‘ r o’clock, a. m, th# procession moved from

f cd hy the Rev’d. Brother Holcombe,
• In tin; course of his remarks brother 11.
r related the following' anecdote, with which
" we were so much pleased, that we cannot
i, resist the temptation of repealing it;—
r it may be well to premise that brother
’ H. is a minister of the Raptisi profession
« Noon after ilia orthnaiion, he was initiated

. the divine character ofthe chriatian) and
j to suggest the propriety of his removal,
r A sagacious member of the convention,
i however, observed, that an insuperable
| obstacle was thrown in thxir way. We
i have no f/um.said he, to support aninvesti

Ccnimon justice, at least requires that,
■ before we proceed we should be acquain

itself, than becoming members of the same
community. The propriety of this rea

| prejudices of his colleagues would not
; permit them to adopt this only just alter
| native by which they could test the
. principles of the institution, rvf ititirsi:
• the clamor against brother H. immediate
ly subsided; and the convention dissolved,
not a little chagrined at the ludicrous pre

TI IE public arc informed, that the op.
opeartions' of the College at this place,
will commence on the first Monday in Jan
uary next, under advantages peculiarly
favorable, and such r.s it has never before
possessed since its establishment. It will
have every officer usually belonging to
s-'ch an institution, who for talents and
character, in the direction and manage
ment of its affairs, it may be confidently
said, will not be surpassed in any similar
establishment in the United States. It has
lately been furnished with a new and ex
tensive library, which will be considera
bly encreased by the commencement of
the ensuing year, and during the first
months of spring, and perhaps muoh soon
er, it will have the accession of a splendid
Philosophical Apparatus—For the pur
chase of this last, funds were transmitted
Mr. Professor Jackson in Europe, early in
the present year; and from his judicious
selection, a most useful and complete one
is expected. The present officers are the
Hev’d. Ebenezer Porter, President of the
University; Mr, John R. Golding, Profes

Professor of Natural Philosophy and Chem
istry; Mr. James Camak, Proft sser of
Mathematics, and Mr. Ebenezer Newton,
firs-. Tutor—Althou gk lie President has
not been heard from since his recent ap

’he greatest probability of his being at his
station early in January.
The Professors and Tutors will certain
ly be in their places on the day of the c ui
