- TRIAL OF Sill FRANCIS BUHDETT.
I Leicester, Marc'u* !.
s Tills being fixed for the tr.al of
>' sir Francis Burdett, on a charge of libel
i alledgcd to be contained in. a letter writ
r .ten by the honorable baronet on the 22d
- August last, addressed to the electors of
- Westminister, respecting the transactions
, at Manchester, the court was crowded to
j excess at a very early hour. About 9 o’-
; clock a loud shout was hoard from the
r multitude without,and immediately after
l wards sir Francis Burdett appeared in
court and took his Seat next to the ussoci
i ate, undef the bench.
Mr. Balguy opened the proceedings.—.
Mr. Serjeant Vaughan replied; a..d mr.
justice Bed summed up, expressing Ins
decided opinion that the letter was a libel,
and that more poisonous ingredients never
were condensed in one paper.
The jury conversed together in the box
for about two minutes; the foreman then
a stepped into his place, and called out
3 “ guilty of libel.”
Mr. Denman remarked that the verdict
did not find the publication ill l-eicester

The trial ended at half past five,—The
court remained crowded to the greatest,
1 excess till the end of the trial. The most
[ perfect silence was preserved on hearing
the verdict; sir Francis Burdett on leaving
the court w r as attended by multitudes
1 which could with great difficulty pour a
\ long the streets between the Castle and

hats, and cheertfd the whole way. Sir
Francis Burdett addressed them from an
upper window of the Inn, recommending
them to disperse quietly. His recoinmtn

It is understood that a motion will be
made next term, for setting aside toe ver

1 In Blackwood’s Magazine for January we
meet with perhaps the last notice otmiss
Q’Neil, in the following highly eouipli.
mei tary strain. ,
1 And so we are nevjer again to see miss
O’Neil! never again to witfch her eyes;
those ‘ fountains of sweet tears,’ till we be
come enamoured of ‘ dainty sweet melan
choly !’ Never again to —But we are
getting foolish, and, indeed, impertinent—
for this lady is no longer a subject of pub-
L lie notice. We now take leave of her for
ever—convinced that the stage will i.evc:'
see hec like again, as it never did before,
i The very qualities' which made her what
she was, would, in the natural course of
. things, have kept her from publicity. Ills
difficult to conceive what train of circum
stances could have made an actress of such
a woman: And we cannot help feeling a se
cret compensation for the loss ol her, in
the reflection, that she has only now
. crowned and completed the conceptions
. we had always formed of her nature, by
■ thus willingly resigning the enthusiastic
, idolatry of a whole people, for, the quiet
comforts of home, and the company of her
. own happy thoughts. She will now fulfil
j her true destiny—for she was made tn be a
I or an Imogene, but not to act
f them.
