Thursday Morning, June 15, 18170.
(£/* ffi e Foreign Intelligence publish,
ed in this Morning’s Paper, is of an inter
esting and important nature.
The political condition of Europe and
the Confederated States of North Ameri
Cjq presenting a melancholy and
painful spectacle on tire one side, holds out
on the other, a brilliant contrast, upon
which the mind cf.the patriot dwells with
delight and satisfaction. To the American
people, who live under the benign influ
ence of a government righteously and e
qually administered, the present history of
the old world teems with instruction of
the deepest importance to their nati
onal welfare. In Great-Rritain ami France,
we see an impoverished and disaffected
community arrayed against the executive
powers, determined to obtain an amelio
ration of their distresses, or to sacrifice
their lives in lhi j attempt. In the Austrian
dominions, the situation of the people is
not much better—Although not composed
of such inflammable materials, they watch
more steadily and systematically the ad
ministration of their affairs. Such a poli
cy is better calculated to prevent and cor
. reet abuses, than the most violent opera
tions, urged on by the most desperate im
petuosity. In Spanish America, the work
of Revolution,-although still progressing,
is doubtful. Deep rooted habits and pre
judices are to be eradicated, before a sys
tem of government of any permanent util
ity can be established. E»en with a peo
pie that have yet to form a community,
based upon-new and unknown principles,
this is no easy matter. How uncertain
then will be the attainment, when they have
to encounter fixed prejudices, and assume,
us it were, a different being. Such is the
critical predicament in which old Spain
ami her colonies are at present situated-
U will, at least, be difficult for them to
survive the storm. —If they do, Patriotism
and Philanthropy may, indeed, exult.
Now, let us turn our reflections to our
owii highly layered country. What abun
dant reason have we to.rejoice !—A gov
eminent devoted to the people, and a peo
ple devoted to the government.—A gov
ernment where titular nobility is, only
known by toame; and where the tenure
of the governing, is the voice of the gov
erned. A government supported by virtue
and talent, and cherished by gratitude and
patriotism; where the slightest injury done
a citizen, is considered an outrage upon
the Constitution!—Such is ihe vivid con.
trad.—Let us appreciate it, and be wise.
Let our Northern and Eastern brethren
mad the follow ing paragraph from the N-
York Columbian of the 31*1 May, and then
say that they cio not live in “ glai,s hou
ses.” Let them read it, and learn to mice
ihfi beam out of their own eyes, before they

poor human nature!
The following intelligence from New-
Orleans, evidences a state of civil Sc moral
turpitude, which can be attributable only to
a shameful laxity of law and justice. In no
quarter of the union, where there is one
tourth of the intelligence, refinement and
wealth to be f Hind, could 311 cli high handed
measures, be, for a moment, deliberated,
without involving the partus in instant
destruction and disgrace
Lafltte, already owes his life to the
clemency of our Government; but, it ap
pears he has shamefully abused its for
bearance. Should justice again overtake
him, her demands must be sitisfied.

April 26.
“ You will have heard before this reaches
you that eighteen pirates capaired by
Capt. Madison of the U. S. schr. Lynx,
have been sentenced to be hung on the
25th of May for Piracy. They have »
great part of the populace in their favor.
At the head of them is Lafitte, one of Na
poleon’s ex-generals. They have for these
two monlhsspast been attempting to res
rue the eighteen prisoners, but have been
hitherto unsuccessful. Last night two of
ficers of tiie rifle corps and three office is
of the tl. States regular troops wuj»t in
disguise in search of tin- pirates ; they dis

are well armed ; the uflun rs w«;re observ
ed and fired upon by.these renegadovs.
“ Every night there is a volunteer put
role, fimr men strong - , on each square* of
the city- There is also- ;vw independent
company to pat-role the streets besides
tliepatrole of (be C. S. troops. Last night
the city was set (ire; to in three different
purls, hut the fire was discovered by the
vigilance of the pat role, and extinguished
by the exertions of the citizens. We are
ordered by the governor to appear at ten
o'clock, in full uniform and equipped; to
go in company with the rifle corps, to
aa.ifcijll these infernal rascals. Mr. VV. G.

Singular Coincidence.
(£/• It will be seen from the following
article, that while some of our American
politicians Were thundering’their anathe
mas against Mr. FORSYTH, for bis bold
and decisive conduct to the Court of Spain,
the British Merchants, in London, were
pledging bis health, in flowing - gob
lets, as the Conservator of Commerce, and
the Advocate of Liberty! —A strange, co
incidence, indeed !
On the 26th a dinner was given in Lon
don, chiefly by the merchants engaged in
trade with Spain, in celebration of the re
cent change of the constitution of that
country. About 150 persons were pre
sent, wniong whom was the Spanish Am
bassador. One of the toasts given, was,
“ The Honorable Mr. Forsyth, t!.e United
States Ambassador at Madrid.”
The .Season.—-During the month of May,
the weather has been unusually cold, and
a considerable quantity of rain has fallen.
To day it barf cleared off, and the wind is
from the North West. The Thermome
ter stands 68. We find by the papers re
ceived by the Steam boat, that on Thurs
dap last, the mountains in the neighbor
hood of Albany, were covered with snow.
At the town of Bern, it was from two to
three inches in'depth. In Herkimer the
snow storm continued 5 yburs At Uossie,
in St. Lawrence Count), it continued the
whole of the 17th. On Saturday last, says
the Argus, “ a severe frost was experienc
ed in all the back towns; in some the
ground was actually frozen. In the neigh
borhood of Albany it was less severe.”—
On Friday last, a considerable quantity ot
snsw fell at Bellows-falls, * the Connec
ticut river, which remained on the ground
until the next day. We have not learnt
that vegetation has suffered materially.—
Beans, corn, and some other tender vege
tables are partially injured.
