CjAETION.
A.? several (jonnterfeit imitations ofHui
dred Dollar Dills of the Dank of August ti.
liave been lately passed, and others offer
ed, in this jilate, the earliest informiqitm
thereof is communicated through the press
to warn the pliblic against further imposi
tion. ' ,
As far as the counterfeits have been on
- amined, they are dated Iff Decern. 1817,
, Letter C. The paper is pretty good, and
the engritving in general a well executed
’ imitation- t>f the original, but aornewhat
» darker and strongev in appearance, espooi
; all} in tne h-iiv tia.s throng-iioui, umf in
the names of The engravers at the bottom
of the rote.
’ The counterfeits, though not all of the
1 same length, are generally a sixteenth of
i an inch shorter than the genuine; the
5 horizontal line on the top of tiro letter K
in the word HANK, which in the genuine
I note almost connects the upright w ith the
sloping part, is deficient in the counter
feit; and the right of the vignette, nt the
right cf the counterfoil Hill, encircling
l the figures 100 has but one of the tendrils
or hair flourishes—the lower or horizon
tal one in the form of aCO being omitted.
In ffbe counterfeits, the figures on the
right and left, denoting the numbers of
the bill, are written by the same hand,
whereas, in all the genuine, they ar<i in
variably and perceptibly written by two
pcrsbns. . -
The Letters in the forged signature of
tire President are more roundly formed
at the turns, and those of the Cashier's
much flatter than in the genuine, and a
carefulness and formality in both, observ
able in the Counterfeit*.
All the bad Dills seen or heard of, arc
filled up wi'.h the name of .las. Clay,
and have thetlye diatmcffoos—Tire- tet
ter,! fn the genuine is formed without
the fine curved line crossing the Cen
tre of die stem, which appears Ltf the bad
Bills, the letter C is much heavier, and
the penmanship in the whole name al
together inferior to the genuine.
It has been asserted, that the impressions
of the spurious Biffs are from the original
Plate, but the several variations particu
larised above, are a sufficient reply to
those assertions.
