The Students of our University, from a
belief that the Work, entitled, %t Memoirs

hood and scurrility, and unfit to occupy a
place in any respectable Library, lately de

Alexander Hamilton has been quoted as
the greatest champion of the manufactur
ing system. His Report is certainly a
strong testimony in his behalf; but it ccr
Uinly has been as much praised as it de
served. Yet I would quote Mr. Hamilton
against himself. / In the Federalist, I find
the following remarks from his pen: “The
encouragement of agricultiite and manu
factures is an appendage of the domestic
police of the States, Exorbitant duties on
imported articles tend to render other
classes of the community tributary, ia an
improper degree, to the manufacturing
classes. They would be attended with
inequality between the manufacturing and
the non-manufacturing states ” This is
pretty strong, and it strikes me pretty true
Vet, we are to forget this contempora
ry exposition of the constitution, from the
pen of one, too, who was not disposed to
narrow down thepouers of Congress.
Richmond Enq.
Extract of a letter from Portland, Maine.
“During the session of the legislature
in this town, the good people contrived to
have themselves amused by theatricals,
by evading the law which proscribes them.
The handbills read thus : “ This evening
a -moral lecture will be delivered called the
Mery Wives of Windsor, in 5 parts, (not
ads) after which will be recited an interest
ing story, in 3 p. rts, called the Honey
Moon.” The Third day, the actors (the
best peformen, from Boston) were brought
before a justice, and after a long and
amusing trial w ere acquitted, as not one of
the witness would swear that they w re
the same persons they had seen reciting
the etailing befo e, it being impossible to
recognise them through the disguise of
t teir dresses, Ike besides they had not
been sot n to receive money for tickets. —
Since that time they have called it a con
cert, and between thr songs, stories to be
-cited gratis, receiving money for,a con
cert .being lawful, ’I he performances
are . xtren.iy interesting.”*
• This was the custom many years ago
cl Philadelphia. They used to advertise
plays as “ moral lectures ” and then, with
out menti ming ti e name of the play, they
publised a quotation from it, ar thus;
“Ah irs., a horse —my kingdom
For a h wse.”
The Public then knew that it was Rich
ard the Third which was to be performed.
The result of the trial at Portland was
quite ludicrous. «Y ’at. Adv.

Flatulence, Loss of Appetite, G,mr., and
Gravel, together with all affections ofthe
liver, and the whole train of nervous and
bilious disorders These pills require no
confinement or restraint in diet, as they do
not contain one atom of mercury, in any
shape. A decided ptdfefeuce is given to
them by families of the first distinction,
so mild is their action, yet «o effectual
that every obstruction in the Stomach is
mpoved with incredible quickness, al
though they act us a complete renovating
medicine, and strengthen at the same
time., Nothing can prove the superiority
of these pills, more than the'number of
cases communicated by persons of the first
respectability, which may be had on ap

shewn them, by the first medical charac

Mr. Lewis Scott, of Brecon, in the county ,
of Brecon, was for a long time laboring
under an extreme hrwness of spirits, so
much so, that he was obliged to neglect
part ofhis business. He went to Swansea,
.thinking bathing would be of service to
him; but to his great concern, he found no
relief. He Afterwards cafne to Chepstow |
his native place, where his mother and ,
friends now live; lie complained to me how (
II he was, and appeared much dejected, (
saying lie thought he never should oe well
any more. 1 advised him to take your

your Pills only, that restored him to his
usual health and spirits. (
