Said Eaiug is about 55 years ol age, mid
dling size, ruddy complexion, full eyes,

a great talker, and a man of pretty consi
derable information, and has latterly com
manded the ship Rebecca, outof Savannah;
and after loosing that ship, has been en
ga„ed in the patriotic service ol South A
tnerica. He stole on the night of 28th ul
timo from the town port ot Barnwell dis
trict, S. Carolina, Six Negro* s, to wit
Pcdydore, Lymas, Nancy, Nanny, Tenah,
and child, about a year and a had old.
The above reward will be given for the
pprebending the said Ewing or the Ne
groes, so that the proper owner can get
tiiem. It i» supposed he will make for
the Alabama or East Florida.

Island or Coosa-hatchie. Boat owners
and all others are cautioned against bar

conveniences, arising from want ot experi t
ence, it is with diffidence 1 announce fny
self as being about to undertake, (in addi ,
tion to other engagements) the arduous «
task ot superintending the Editorial de
partment of a paper I, however trust ,
that my j\'ews t-.iTangements will be such,
as will enable me to present the citizens of
Alabama with a Journal, not entirely unin
teresting to them, while my exertions in
procuring facts in relation to that State ,
and other subjects, aided by some literary
friends, will render it nat altogether un
acceptable toothers.
1 must, on this occasion, be permitted to
depart from the general custom of giving
laborious det-ils ot the advantages result
ing from Netotp tjrer publications, and ot
making specious promises? the one being
already sufficiently understood, and lie
other calculated to deceive 1 oiler neith
er; merely remarking that its name pro
claims its principles,.and that my humble
efforts will be freely exercised in endeav
ouring to promote the usefulness of tin
paper and interests of the people. *
It may not be. amiss togive to those un
acquainted, a short sketch of the place
whence the paper is to be issued.
Montgomery, formerly called Hostili
Bluff, lately East Alabama and New Phi
ladelphia, (the former established by a
Company in Georgia, and the latter oy A.
Dexter, esq. both having been incorpora
ted into one town by the last legislature)
is situate intbe healthy, fertile, and thickly
settled County, of the same name, ofWtiic.f
it is the seat of justice—intended to pt i
petuatetwo distinguished martyrs* to th.
cause of the republic, directly opposite
the eastern point of that highly cultivated,
extensive, and fertile tract of land, know '
by the name of the “ Uig Rend” It ad
joins the fraction on which the town ot
Alabama stands, and bordering on the
celebrated river of that name, to which it
it is navigable at all seasons from the Gulf
of Mexico, for steam boats of a large cia-s
—distant about two hundred miles from
Milledgeville; a similar distance from the
sea ports of Mobile and Blakely; about 55
above Cahawba, the seat of government;
and about 12 miles below the junction of
the Coojo and Talapoosa. It is the poin
at which the Atlantic mails reach their
first stopping place in the state, and from
whence JVett'9 may be distributed through
the country with great facilities Mont
gomery, from its high and airy situation,
the purity of its waters, flowing fronrits
several springs, and the elevation of tlu
banks along the river on both sides, wliicli
exclude stagnant waters, is considered pe
culiarly healthy; indeed, many resort to
thr.(; section diming the summer months,
on that account: It contains many roman
tic, as well as level sites for building, ami
for an infant establishment, it may be call
ed a pleasant, flourishing, town.

Major Montgomery, who fell at the Horse Shoe; ami
the town derived its title, from the immortal general
who shared :he same fate at Quebec, at an early pe
riod of Che Revolutionary war.

on the 17th of March 1820, entitled « An
act to authorize the President of the U.
States to appoint a Receiver of the Public
Monies and Register of the Land Office
for the district of Lawrence county in the
Arkansas territory,” it is enacted, that
any person, having a claim to a right of
pre-emption within the said district, shall
make known his claim and location, ac
cording to the provision of the laws now
in force, to the Register, at least six weeks
before tlie time to be designated by the
President of the United States for issuing
patents to the soldiers of the late army,
entitled to bounty land in said district:

the fourth Monday of November next, as
the time at which patents as aforesaid
shall commence to issue
