as will enable me to present the citizens of

teresting to them, *vliile my exertions in
procuring facts in relation to that Stale
and other subjects, aided by some literary
‘ friends, will render it net altogether un
, acceptable to others,
i I must, on this occasion, be permitted so
; depart from the general custom of giving
- laborious details of the advantages result
ing from Newspaper publications, and of
making specious promises; the pne being
already sufficiently understood, and the
other calculated to deceive 1 offer neith
* er; merely remarking that its name pro
claims its principles, and that my humble
’ effort:, will be freely exercised in endeav
ouring to promote the usefulness of tut
paper and interests of the people.
I It may not be amiss to give to those un
acquainted, a short sketch of the place
whence the paper is to be issued.

Company in Georgia, and the latter by A.
Dexter, esq. both having been incorpora
* ted into one town by the last legislature)
is situate inthe healthy, fertile, and thickly
settled county, of the same name, of which
it is the seat of justice—intended to per
petuate two distinguished martyrs* to the
1 cause of the republic, directly opposite
1 the eastern point of that highly cultivated,
* extensive, and fertile tract of land, known
by the nam« of the “ Hig Jlend. ’' It ad
joins the fraction on which the town of
Alabama stands, and bordering on the
celebrated river of that name, to which h
it is navigable at all seasons from the Gulf
of Mexico, for steam boats of a large clahS
—distant about two hundred miles from
Milledgeville; a similar distance from the
sea ports of Mobile and Blakely; about 55
above Culiawba, the seat of government;
and about 12 miles below the junction of
the Coosa and Talapoosa. It is the port
at winch the Atlantic mails reach their
first Mopping place in the stale, and from
whence News may be distributed through
the country with great facilities Mont
gomery, from its nigh and airy situation,
the purity of its waters, flowing from its
•several springs, and the elevation of the
banks along the river on both sides, which
exclude stagnant waters, is considered pe
culiarly healthy; im’.-ed, many resort to
that section during the summer months,
on that account: It contains many roman
tic, as well as level sites for building? and
for an infant establishment, it may be call
ed a pleasant, nourishing, town

Whereas, by an act of Congress passed
on the 17th of March iB2O, entitled “ An
act to authorize the President of the U.
States to appoint alleceiverof the Public
Monies and Register of the Land Office
for the district of Lawrence county in the
Arkansas territory,” it is uiacted, that
any person, having a claim to a right of
pre-emption within the said district, shall
make known his claim and location, ac
cording to the provision of the laws now
in force, to the Register, at least six weeks
before the time to be designated by the
President of the United States for issuing
patents to the soldiers of the late army,
entitled to bounty laud in said district:
Therefore, I James Monroe, President
of the United States,do hereby designate
the fourth Monday of November next, as

shall commence to issue

sides of his neck, the tail swabed and

dollars if strayed, and if stolen, and the
thief apprehended and committed, twen
ty dollars in addition will he paid, to any
person who will deliver the same gelding
to the subscriber in Augusta, or to Col.
M. F. Boisclair, residing about eight
miles out of town.

letter coming to band, it is feared tliev
have been stolen. If the innocent hold
er of the above described bills will give
information thereof to Mr. Hobby, Book
seller, or Mr. James Randolph, Merchant,
so that the bills may be traced back to the
thief, he shall receive the above reward
and indemifty for the amount of the'bills
iu his own possesion.
