“In consequence of a late act of

until then, Ostend and Antwerp, as the
nearest puns to France, will in all pmbn

that case, I beg h ave to suggest my opin

would recommend in preference, and tin-,
d-i- present circumstances, the port or
Osieiul, «s more immediately contiguous
to France, being only nine leagues dis

drawing sixteen feet water, do entey the
Jxort of dstond, without incurring the
east difficulty; and the advantages other
wise, are many , comparatively speaking,
with those of the port of Antwerp, from
its local position, it brings to vessels
bound to ;h f rnu-r, an earlier arrivals,
and of coui.se gives a speedier return; yon
have also thereto, the lesser charges of
pilotage,as well as of port charges, under
these coniideraiious; it gives advantages
ami facilities, to both the ship owner and
freii liter, and L may safely assert, that du
ring my tv -idvnce of three years there,
as United Mates Consul fur that port, I
have not known during that time a single
instance of vessels coming in or going mu
of said port, to make 1 any damage or be
doming wrecked, whether deslin. d to or
from East or the \V st Indies, tr to or
from any prune in Europe. Should yon
deem my information, worthy ofa place in
your paper, you may insert the same, for
the information of those whom it may con

I have the honor lo he, most respectful
