For the Chronicle & Advertiser. A day or two previous to the ap- Mi.ce of Col. Cumraing’s pamph- into the “ conduct of Esq.” fa. fa it Scidenlall# mentioned to myself, Several other gentlemen, that, to, ££ that part of Mr. McDuffie’s Segation relative to. the d.scoyery I 11 in the mountains of his mode of i JL Col. Gumming would like to, hive the opinion of several disinte-, rested persons of Augusta, whether the subject had not been universally talked of previous to his departure hence- all of whom willingly granted a note to 1 that effect, and had no ob jection to annex their names. Col. Gumming was furnished with more certificates to the same offert than W( ,re publishedfour only were, taken, from no particularity of selec tion I believe, otherwise than that these were the first handed n, and W ere deemed amply sufficient. For this simple act in which every other individual in this place could, and 1 presume would have joined, if the in timation or request had been made, I find myself the subject of malignant aspersion by Mr. George lWD.itf.eJ The liuth of my statement (whitii is verified in every particular by the other certificates') is not pretende ! to be denied. The subject in truth was harped upon by his friends with such unwearied pertinacity, as to pall up on every ear from infancy to dotage, and in hearing the tiresome tale, I think it highly probable I may also; have spoken of the reputed accuracy i of Col. Cumming’s shot; and had Mr. M‘Duffie requested a certificate to that effect, 1 am sure 1 should free ly have given it; and although I ne ver saw Col. Gumming shoot, it was ]fi my power to have illustrated the ( current report, by a recital of what I heard from his lips, to wit: that he did not intend to shoot at a space much wider than a man’s two fingers, lying between the hip bone and false ribs: Mr. Duffle can answer whether there was any precision in his shot; notwithstanding the pivot movement. I will now honor him with a word for myself. Language was made to convey ideas: when, therefore, a man oses words, it is presumable be com prehends their import. Mr. McDuf fie has called me the “ impertinent apothecary/’ What does he mean to convey by tli,e term “ impertinent?” On whom have I obtruded my opini ons, except when elicited in conversa tion or correspondence ? I hold the right to exercise the understanding of my fellow men in too much respect. Into whose company have 1 ever forced myself an unwclqpme guest, from infancy to this day ?—Mr. Mc- Duffie is unfortunate. —“ Apotheca ry.” lam sorry lam obliged to put common ideas into his bead; but the cranium even pf some lawyers it seems, is as thick as the shield of Ajax. It is therefore well that Col. .Gumming did not shoot at this mark. The term apothecary is applied to those who compound the prescrip tions of physicians; and stands per fectly contra-distinctive to that of Druggist or Chymist. Pray, which of these has hern my business ? But how contemptible must that man be, whose inflated pride lifts him above the exercise of common sense, and when floating on the vapour of his own disturbed imagination, endea vors to affix disgrace upon a man for his profession (however humble that might be, instead of one that re quires more learning, probity, tempe rance, and is of more utility than al most any other in our country,) but whatever may be the estimation in which my avocation is held, it is much less likely to disgrace me than antagonizing with Mr. George M’- iPuffie. Mr. M’Duffie denominates me <( his (Col. Cumming’s) sycophantic "worshipper, the certifying apotheca ry.” Sycophantic ! oh no !—this is a mistake; perhaps some “ imperti nent” printer* has interpolated the expression, and. will receive Mr. M’- Duffie’s reprimand; then due ac knowledgement will be made in can dor before the public. But if this vision ever played before his fancy, I am sure he has not always been without his u looking glass,” and by that natural operation of the mind which presents a man’s own deformi ty continually to his thoughts, makes the shallow fool believe it a picture of all mankind; from Mr. M’Duffie’s •mirror, God forbid this should be the case. ' “Worshipper”?!—He is to be comraisserated for the abuse of this word, even as a figure of speech. When comparing the two men to gether, the distance between them is immeasurable, and to Mr. M’Duffie’s satellites (if there are vermin so low) no doubt my expressions may have appeared exaggerated. I penetrate the views of the wily animal in one regard ;he has “ caught a tartarin his conflict with Col. Gumming, he has grappled with a lion, and finding out his mistake, he would make any sacrifice to fix upon weaker prey, in the forlorn hope of exciting the compassion, or even con tempt of his adversary, to spare his bones or his life, for which he now gasps. Having detained the reader thus beg to relate an incident. ,i he pamphlet appeared on Friday morning last, the next day the silken knight made his appearance in town, ] where he remained (or in its vicinity) j until Sunday evening. His friends 'i looked up quite revived, all being ; certain that he came on no other ! errand but to challenge Col. Cum i niing: the meeting was expected to take place on Monday; bets 1 be lieve were proffered and taken up;, some of the most respectable of his admirers had actually pledged them i selves to give each other the earliest possible intelligence of the move ments on Monday morning, from a wish perhaps to see the fun. They were sure Mr. M‘Duffie would never ill'W Capt. Elmore to bear the im putations that had been cast upon <n: ; to jeopardize, or most probably h'-te hi# life in a quarrel not his own ; to deprive his family of a support, a head i id a protector; his country of a high minded citizen &a soldier, who by the stern laws of duelling was com- I polled to step into the shoes of a re creant dastard, whom he had mistak en for a gentleman and made his friend : when Monday morning came, however, Mr. M’Duflie was , comfortably jogging along the road, full of pleasing reflections, no doubt arising from the recollection of the dose he had given the apothecary, and sagaciously thinking that u it j was much better to fill two columns of a newspaper than one coffin.” THO.
