Proposals,
BV
JOHN EARSKINE KEAN,
For publishing a JVeia Paper, in the City
of Augusta. (Geo.) to he entitled the
Southern Pacificator,
SINCE the adoption el our mesliuiaide
Constitution, there has been uo period
more fraught with political importance
than the present. The public good, in no
ordinary degree, seems to bo merged in
greedy aspirations after Office. Pecula
tion and intrigue have almost usurped
the scat of Patiiotism, and converted her
sacred sane into an oligarchic Jen. Politi
cal hostility, and personal ambition are
making such rapid inroads upon the sanc
tuary of our Constitution, that honesty
may well high exclaim,
“ The post ij honor, it a private station.'' 1
THE u Kare no visionary observations—
(hey are justified by the present situation
ofthings. From Louisiana to Maine this
great Republic now presents an aspect
indy deplorab|e : not “ Mea
sures," \i the motto—and the unwearied
and specious z> al of “growing factions,”
ha? deluded many from the sainted path
al the Constitute n.
Tacitus has it, that there are no quar
nls mure inveterate than those between re
latives. How important then is it, that
the American Family should sedulously
guard against every cause of distention
—they should crush the monster in its
inci,.ieiK y, if they do not wish to find
that fraternal discord is the sure fore
runner of disunion and destruction. It
is in vain that we sacrificed our blood
and treasure to blazon without the politi
cal edilbe, if anarchy and confusion
reign within :—the glittering fabric will
soon mingle with the dust; and what was
once gazed upon with wonder and admi
ration, will, in a little time, be regarded
only as a splendid ruin !
To divert even the appearance of such
a catastrophe—to allay those angiy feel
ings as much as possible—to preserve an
unanimity of Southern feeling, and of
Southern interest —and to create an uni
ty of action, which will give a lively and
reciprocal impetus to our Trade and Ag
riculture., will be the prin ary objectsuf
the Southern Pacificator. Person
al abuse of no kind whatever will be ad
mitted within its columns.
It is not to bo inferred, however, that
the Pacificator will be neutral or passive
in the political occurrences of the day
no—they will bo canvassed with freedom.
But it must bo distinctly understood, that
the paper will not be slavishly tied down
to any party. Political consistency is a
virtue rarely to be met with. Interest,
passion, or prejudice, too often war,* or
blinds our judgment; and a pertinacity
in error is frequently mistaken fora true
devotion to principles of honor. Heuco
the bigot and impostor in politcs and rc-
Jig-ion will sometime triumphantly swim
with the current of popular favor, whilst
the patriot and Christian, like precious
metals, glitter for a moment, then sink to
the bottom.
With this brief outline, we submit
ourselves to the patronage of the public,
until our work shall speak for its If. It -
will appear in January ensuing,
CONDITIONS.
Tim Southern Pucficalor, will be pub
lish9three times a week with entire
new type, on as large a sheet as any pa
per in the southern states, at $6 per an
num, payable on the appearance of the
first number, or $7 at the expiration of
Ihe year.
Advertisements and other printing at
the customary rates.
ITT Editors of newspapers in the
Southern States, are requested to give
the above a few insertions.
