SATURDAY, JULY 10, IS2L
| Our last papers furnish very few articles
„t' interesling'news 1 , and but a moderate
Kortion even of electioneering matter. A
sort of political calm seems about to suc
t( , d the adjournment of the
Committee and the resignation of the Mox
ican Minister —but there are no indications
that the spirit of party is in any deg ref ex
tiosuished, though its turbulent operations
are momentarily suspended : fpr the Presi
dential Office still furnishes matter for sea
tons exertion, and the advocates ot the res
pective candidates cannot he expected to
be idle till the voice of the Electoral Col
leges shall designate the individual wluys
o fill the first office in the gift of the Nn
ion. In this designation it is not probable
ley will pass the first letter of the alpha
jut, to find the initial of pne who will by
is virtue, worth, and talents, unite their
|flVa"es in his favor. l!ut however barren
ur jtapers, we are graiilietl at toe commu
tations of our advertising friends. Nisi
lirialiun in the weather will render these
■ vors unacceptable—and \vi> hope the
ftercury will not rise so high as to prevent
I continual increase of them.
I Some of the eastern papers announce ,
|v!,nt they consider an “ important disco-
Lery in milking,” and which consists in in- :
producing a straw or small tube into the I
tent of the cow, and drawing oil’ the nour :
ishinu fluid in this way. fc’everal persons ;
are stated to* have stood by and seen cows i
milked by this process. We should sus- ■
pcct that this was rather an effort to en- '
courage laziness; and without pretending to (
any practical knowledge on this sfrojcct, i
we should suppose that the usual process I
of milking was so much assimulated to the
act of sucking, that it would he the only ,
means by which a loss of milk could be ,
guarded against, and the hag regularly emp- ,
tied of its tiensure, consistently with the 1
safety and health of the animal. The fre
quent introduction of a tube would by its
irritation, we suspect, produce intlamma
tim; and if it did not, its resists are pro
duced by so little action, that the labor of
milking would, we should apprehend, soon
he rendered need!#, by the drying nji .as
well ns emptying the bag., We mention
however the discovery, that those who
choose may make trial ol it.
An equality of cnnrhtinn between per
sons about to form matrimonial alliances,
is often thought to lay a surer foundation
for domestic comfort, than those diversities
either in fortune or acquirements, which
seem to place the parties g.rally in contrast
with each other. It is probable that this
idea was present to the mind of both Duct.
Johnson and Mrs. Bolter, whom he after
wards married, tu on oi their interviews
during courtship. The Tudor ?• her
“ that lie was of a mean extraction, that
laid no money, and that lie had an uncle
that was hanged;” to which, byway of
reducing herself to an equality with him,
she replied, “that she had no more money
than he,” and that though “no relation of
hers had been hanged, she had Jiftywho
deserved hanging .”
Extraordinary hot weather. —The ex
cessive heat lhat has been experienced in
this town, timing the last six days, we pre
sume is altogether unparalleled in this
country. The Mercury in an .excellent
I'arenheil Thermometer, stood at 3 o'clock,
B. iM. exposed ip the air in the shade, on
Saturday last tit 90 deg.—on Sunday at
94 deg.—oil JMjpnday at 103 deg.—on
Tuesday at 103 deg.—on Wednesday 103
deg.—and on Thursday at 100 deg—Dur
ing all this period we have had no rain, and
the heat still continues to he distressingly
oppressive. Should this w eather continue,
it would not he surprising^if the Town ol
Cheraw should ere long he found cca> plete-
Jy depopulated, the dozens all ha vie r c va

What scenes has Lafayette witnessed
and been part of since the following was
said of him in a Paris paper of 17 77 •'
PARI S, APRIL 4, 1777-
One of the richest ol our young nobility,
the Marquis de La Fayette, a relation ol the
Duke de Aoailies,between I!) and 20 years
of age, lias, at his own expense, hired a fri
gate, and provided every thing necessary
for a voyage to America, with two officers
of his acquaintance. lie set out last week,
having told ids lady anti family that he was
going to Italy, lie is to serve as Major
General in the American army. On the
other hand, the Count de I’ulkely, an Irish
gentleman, who is a Major General in the
French seivice, is going, with the leave o!
his Majesty, to offer himself to the King ot j
Great Britain, to serve against iheAineri-1
cans.
What has become of litis Count de Hulk' 1 - j
ly ? Did such a man really live ; ‘or die! |
the Parisian editor only introduce him for j
the sake of impartiality, and to avoid pre
maturely committing himself, even by im
plication, to thecause of independence ? If
he did live, what’different rewards have
awaited the foe, and the votary, of freedom!
While
the name of the former is only by!

r, GENUINE HEROISM.
When the plague raged violently in Mar-
eveiy link of eflection was’broken : ,
the father turned from the child—the child *
from the father; cowardice, ingratitude, no
longer excited indignation. Misery is at
its height, when it thus destroys every gen
erous feeling—thus dissolves every tie ol
humanity ! The city became a desert,
gras%grcw in the streets, a tuneral met you
at every step. The physician* assembled
in a body at the Hotel de Viile, to hole! a
consultation on the fearful disease, for which
no remedy had yet been discovered. After
along deliberation, they decided, unanimous
ly, that the malady had a peculiar and mys
terious character, w hich opening a corpse
alone might develop—art operation it was
Impossible to attempt, since the operator
must infallably become a victim in a lev
hours - , beyond the power of human art to
save him,as the \ iolriice of the attack would
preclude their administering customary re
medies. A dead pause succeeded this fatal
declaration. Suddenly, a surgeon named
Guyon. in the prime of life, and of great
celebrity in his profession, rose, and said,
firmly, “ Ge it so : I devote myself for the
safety of my country. Before this numer
ous assembly, 1 promise, in the name ot
humanity and religion, that to-morrow, at
the break of day, I will dissect a corpse,
and write down, as i proceed, what i ob
si'rvi'Fjk
lie 'left the assembly instantly. They
admire him, lament his fate, and doubt whe
ther he will persist in his design. The
intrepid and pious Guyon, animated by all
the sublime energy religion can inspire,
acted up to his word. He had never mar
ried, he was rich, and he immediately made
his will, dictated by justice and piety ; lie
confessed, and in the middle of the night,
received the sacraments. A man had died
of the plague, in Ins house, within four and
twenty hours. Guyon, at day-break, shut
himself up in the same room ; he took w ith
him an inkstand, paper, ami a little crucifix.
Full of enthusiasm, never had he felt more
linn or more collected; kneeling belore the
corps, he wrote —“Mouldering tenement ol
an immortal soul, not only can i gaze on
thee without horror, but even with joy and
gratitude. Thou wilt open tome the gates
of a glorious eternity. In discovering to
me the secret cause of the terrible disease
which destroys my native city, thou wilt
enable me to point out some salutary rem
edy : thou wilt render my sacrifice useful.
Oh God ! (continued he.) thou will bless
the action thou hast thyself inspired.” lie
began —lie finished the dreadful operation,
and recorded in detail his surgical observa
tions. He then left (lie room, threw the
papers into a vase of vinegar, and after
wards sought the Lazaretto, where lie died
in twelve hours—a death ten thousand times
more glorious than the warrior’s, who, to
save ids country’, rushed on the enemy’s
rank—since he advances with hope at least,
sustained.admired, and seconded by a whole
army.
