SATURDAY, JULY TO, 1324.
| Oi:i' lust papers furnish very few articles
% interesting news* and but a moderate
Miition even of electioneering matter. A
J,,. t r.f political calm seems about to slic
ed tim adjournment of the Investigating
Committee and the resignation.of tlie Mcx
iian Minister— but there are no indications
l ilt the spirit of party is in any deg ref ex
tSiciiislied, though its turbulent operations
5e momentarily suspended : lor the ITesi-
J>mial Ollice still furnishes matter for zea
ns exertion, and the advocates of the rcs
■ctive candidates cannot be expected to
K idle till the voice of the Electoral Col-
Hops shall designate the individual whops
ti tiil the first office in the gift of the Na
■on. In this designation it is not probable
Bey will pass the first letter of the alpha-
H t to lim! the initial of ptie who will by
Ks virtue, worth, and talents, unite their
■dl'rages in his favor. Rut however barren
lor papers, we are gratified at the commit-
Hhaiions of oar advertising friends. No?
lioialion in the weather will render these
Ivors unacceptable —and \wt> hope the
lercury will not rise so high as to prevent
I continual increase of them.
I Some of t!ie eastern papers announce
Ivliat they consider an “ important tlisco-
Lcrv in milking,” and which consists in in
producing a straw or small tube into the
heat of the cow, and drawing oil' the nour
fishing fluid in this way. Several persons
are stated to* have stood by and seen cows
milked by this process. We should sus
pect that this was rather an effort to en
courage laziness; and without pretending to
lany practical knowledge on this subject,
|we should suppose that the usual process
of milking was so much assimulated to the
net of sucking, (hat it would he the only
means by which a loss of milk could be
guarded against, and the bag regularly emp
tied of its tteasure, consistently with the
safety and health of the animal. r i he fre
quent introduction of a tube would by its
irritation, we suspect, produce inflamma
lim ; and if it did not, its results are pro
duced by so little action, that the labor of
milking would, we should apprehend, soon
he rendered needldft, by the drying iijt as
well as emptying the bag. We mention
however the discovery, that those Who
choose may make trial olTt.
An equality of conditioii between per
sons about to form matrimonial alliances,
is often thought to lay a surer foundation
for domestic comfort, than those diversities
either in fortune or acquirements, which
seem to place the parties greatly in contrast
with each other. It is probable that this
idea was present to the mind of both Duct.
Johnson and Mrs. Bolter, whom he after
wards married, at one td their interviews
during courtship. The Doctor b -I her
“that he was of a mean extraction, that in,
had no money, and that he had an uncle
that was hangedto .which, byway of
reducing herself to an equality with him,
she replied, “that she had no more money
than he,” and that though “no relation of
hers laid been hanged, she had fftywho
deserved hangi n§.”
Extraordinary lot weather. —The ex
cessive heat that has been experienced in
this town, during the last six days, we pre
sume is altogether unparalleled in ibis
country. The Mercury in an,excellent
f 'arenheil Thermometer,stood at 3 o’clock,
F. M. exposed to the air in the shade, on
Saturday last at 90 deg. —on Sunday at
94 deg.—on Monday at 103 deg,—on
Tuesday at 103 deg.—on Wednesday 105
deg.—anti on Thursday at 100 deg —Dur
ing all this period we have had no rain, and
the heat still continues to Im distressingly
oppressive. Should this weather continue,
it would not be surprising, s is the Town of
Cheraw should ere long he found complete
ly depopulated, the citizens all havi.,,; eva
porated by sndodfics.— [Clieruw Intel.

What scenes has witnessed
and been part of since the following was
said of him in a Paris’ paper of 1 777 !
PARIS, APRIL 4, 177“•
One of ilia richest of our young nobility,
the Marquis de La Fayette, a relation of the
Duke de Noailies, between 19 and 20 years
of ago, has, at his own expense, hired a fri
gate, and provided every thing necessary
for a voyage to America, with two officers
of his acquaintance. He set out hat week,
having told his lady and family that ho was
going to Italy, lie is to serve as Major
General in the American army. On the
other hand, the Count do Bulkely, an Irish
gentleman, who is a Major General in the
French service, is going, with the leave of
his Majesty, to offer himself to the King of
Great Britain, to serve against the Ameri
cans.
What has become of this Count de Bulke
»y ? Did such a man really live ; ’or did
the Parisian editor only introduce him for
the sake of impartiality, and to avoid pre
maturely committing himself, even by im
plication, to tire cause of independence ? If
he did live, what‘different rewards have
awaited the foe, and the votary, of freedom!
While the name of the former is only by
accident delected in an obscure paragraph
>n u newspaper, the latter has become n
« f
“ dear son rj£ memory,” a “ great heir of
fame;” his/ratne is a perfume to'the na
tions, and shall descend with -still richer
fragrance lo* posterity. Such is the em
balming povi€r of public virtue !

GENUINE HEROISM.
When the plague raged violently-in Mar-
cvety link of rffecthm was broken ;
the father turned from the child—the child
from the lather; cowardice.ingratitude, no
longer excited indignation* Misery is at
its height, when it thus destroys every gen
erous feeling—thus dissolves every tie of
humanity i The city became a desert,
grass grew in the streets, a funeral met you
at every step. The physicians assembled
in a body at the'Hotel de Ville, to hold a
consultation on the fearful disease, for which
no remedy had yet been discovered. After
along deliberation, they decided, unanimous
ly, that the malady had a peculiar and mys
terious character, w hich opening a corpse
alone might develop—an oueratjpn it was
impossible to attempt, since die operator
mast infallably become a victim in a fey
hours, beyond the power of human art to
save him,its the ( iolence of the attack would
preclude their administering customary re
medies. A dead pause succeeded this fatal
declaration. Suddenly, a surgeon named
Gayon, in the prime of life, and of great
celebrity in his profession, rose, and said,
firmly, “ Be it so : I devote myself for the
safety of my country. Before this numer
ous assembly, 1 promise, in the name of
humanity and religion, that to-morrow, at
the break of day, I will dissect it corpse,
and write down, as 1 proceed, w hat i ob
serve.fito
lie left the assembly instantly. They
admire him, lament his fate, and doubt whe
ther lie will persist iu his design. The
intrepid and pious Guyon, animated by all
the sublime energy religion can inspire,
acted up to his word. lie had never mar
ried, he was rich, and he immediately made
his will, dictated by justice and piety ; he
confessed, and in the middle of the night,
received the sacraments. A man had died
of the plague, in his house, within four and
twenty hours. Guyon, at day-break, shut
himself up in the same room ; he took w ith
him an inkstand, paper, and a little crucifix.
Full of enthusiasm, never had he felt more
firm or more collected ; kneeling bonn e the
corps, he wrote —“Mouldering tenement of
an immortal soul, not only can i gaze on
thee without horror, but even with joy and
gratitude. Thou wilt open tome the gates
of a glorious eternity. In discovering to
ine the secret cause of the terrible disease
which destroys my native city, thou wilt
enable me to point out some salutary rem
edy : thou wilt render my sacrifice useful.
Oh God ! (continued he.) thou wilt bless
the action thou itast thyself inspired.” He
began —lie finished the dreadful operation,
and recorded in detail his surgical observa
tions. He then left tlie rooit), threw the
papers into a vase of vinegar, and after
wards sought the Lazaretto, white he died
in twelve hours—a death ten thousand times
more glorious than the warrior’s, who, to
save his country, rushed on the enemy’s
rank—since he advances with hope at least,
sustained, admired, and seconded by a whole
army.

uneasiness at the conviction of a black man
