Circulars have been addressed to the mem

Stales, lor the purpose of obtaining these trials;
- and the kimlness of these gentlemen, and the
attention of numerous oilier correspondents,

collection will be c omplete,
j The importance of this work, and the mag
nit tide of the undertaking, it is expected will
insure ii some attention, not only from the pro
fession, hut also from those who feel themselves
interested in (he literature of our country. It
, is the first and only attempt that has keen made
| to rescue from oblivion important and intnest
i >g criminal trials that have, taken place in the
United .'tales, itnd which independent of their
immediate usefulness to the la-yer, are, the
most interesting species of history, and inculcate
some of the purest 10-sons of morality—‘‘they

! Oftho usefulness of (his work it is not nc
' ' ex-ary to sp '.k. It. is designed for those who
are able and willing tc judge for themselves.—
It’cannot but bo matter cl regret, as well as of
, astonishment, that a collection of these trials
, has not been made before, flow is the student,
- and even the lawyer, to become acquainted with
i the criminal jurisprudence of bis country. Our
shelves are loaded it is true, with reports e
judicial proceedings; (hey are so numerous a
. to be considered burdensome; hut from these
I reports c riminal trials and decisions are almost
entirely excluded. They do not come within
. the notice of the reporter; they take place in
the Circuit Court of the United Slates; in the
Oyer and’i ermincr, or Session of the different
Slates. ” They make a noise in their day . llK ]
are forgotten.”
i'he importance of an accurate knowledge o:
t criminal Jaw has never been denied, but the dil
fiddly ol obtaining it has often been acknow

’ * at 1 ’hat we are almost entirely indebted to
English cases and decisions on this branc h of the

1 result from such a system are incalculable and
nevituhle. The Genius of our free institutions
c i‘ government, do not comport with many of
■ the tyrannical and arbitrary principles and
Inrimi of the criminal code ol Great Britain, yet
1 wen re obliged to have recourse to it lor rules
’ construction to explain our own ! The
criminal jurisprudence of a republic must o;
course vary essentially from that of a country
. governed on monarchal principles, and we will
venture (o affirr-i, that no Kingdom on earth
f presents to the-American jurist a chain of pre
r cedents calculated t.i produce an enlarged, cor
r ' cri, am! enlightened view ol the criminal code
of the United state. For this we are to look to
our own courts and adjudications. It is to sup
, ply this important chasm in the jurisprudence
if our country that these reports have been
| undertaken. (See preface to vol. 2d.)
In these trials, the life, liberty, or reputation
ol some person is always at stake, and they draw

Iho editor and publishers, and liberality among
their patrons,
i Mr. Salmons remarks, in his preface to that

( ->f the editor ol this work, and m y he applied to
i the present undertaking: “We shall detab
the reader no longer than to observe, that this
1 collection will not only be useful to the learned
in the law, and those whose misfortune it may
”<■ to lull under a criminal prosecution, but in
l many instances, it corrects as well as illustrates
our English history • and there is scarce a con
troverted point in divinity or politics but the
reader will find has been fully debated here by
the greatest men ournalion has bred.”
