This scene so unworthy the dignity of
l!ie Court, attracted the notice (and i:n
tncdiutejy around the intruder) the mer
riment of the crowd; and m any an eye
was directed towards Brandon, as with
calm gravity lie opened the .note and
glanced over the contents. In a largo
school hoy hand—it was the hand of
Long Ned-were written these few words:
Uy Lord Judge,
“I take hold to beg you will do all you
can for thr* prisoner at the Uarre; as lie is
no other than the'Paul’ I spoke to your
Lordship about. Voa know what 1

As he read this note, the Judge’s head
was observed to droop suddenly, as il by
sickness or a spasm, but lie recovered
himself instantly, nnd whispering to the
officer who brought him the note, slid,
“tiee that madman be immediately re
moved from the court, and lock bin, up
alone, lie is so deranged as to be dan
gerous !”
The officer not a moment in seting
the order execi*d. Three stout consta

“Silence,” proclaimed the voice of the
Judge, and that voice came forth wlh so ]

The verdict was, as all had foreseen—
Cuilty; but it was coupled with C strong
recommendation to mercy.
The prisoner was then asked in the
usual form, whether he had to my nny
thing why sentence of death shoad not be i
passed against him.
As three dread words struck u?on bis
car, slowly the prisoner rose. Hu direct

While Clifford spoke, every eye turned
from him to his J.idgo, and every one
was appalled by the ghastly and fearful
change which bail fallen over Brandon s
face. Men said afterward, that they saw
written there, in terrible distinctness, the
characters of death; and there certainly
seemed something awful and preterna
tural in the bloodless anti haggard calm
ness of his proud features. \et his eye
did not ijuuil, nor the muscles of Ids lip
quiver. Anti with even more than his
wonted loftiness, he met the regard of the

the severe sweetness of its wanted tones
was gone, and it sounded strange and

your mortal career. You have been ac
cused of a daring,robbery, nnd after an
impartial trial, a Jury of your country
men, and the laws of your country, have
decided against you. The recommenda
tion to mercy—(here, only throughout his
speech, Brandon gasped convulsively for
breath) —so humanely added by the Jury
shall be forwarded to the supreme power;

of its success—(the lawyers looked with
some surprise at each other : they expect
ed a far more unqualified mandate, to ab
jure all hope from the Jury’s recommen
dation) —Prisoner! for the opinions you
