JL was instituted in Philadelphia, in
Itv.’o, and during its first session, was en
dowed by an act ofthe Legislature of
Pennsylvania, with power to confer de
grees in Medicine, and with all the privi
leges and prerogatives of similar Institu
tions, in our ovt u country and in Europe.
Biiicc its foundation nearly (500 Btu
dents have attended the respective cour
ses of Lectures, and of this number, 143
from various sections of the U. {States,
the C; nidus, \\ e-1 Indies and Ettrepe,
have I »een admitted to the Degree of Doc
tor of Medicine.
rhe (it h Session ofthe College will
commence oti the Ist Monday of No
vember next, utid it is believed, under the
uiortt favorable auspices; every obstacle
to its future tnlvum-eiuent having- been
removed, and such measures adopted by
the Board of Trustees, us will give a new
impulse lo the exertions ofthe Faculty.
Vmong these measures, it is thought pro
per to specify particularly, the appoint
ment of Professor Drake, of Cincinnati!,
to flic Chair ofthe Practice of Medicine.
His acknowledged reputation us a Lec
turer, and more especially his practical
acquaintance with the diseases most pre
valent in the Southern and Western sec
tions of our country, in which a majority
ofthe Graduates in Medicine may be ex
pected to locate themselves, must greatly
enhance the value of his instructions.
Flic additions which have been made
to the Anatomical Cabinet, with the fa
cilities afforded for dissection and de
monstration. are such as w ill bear com
parison with those of tlie oldest Medical
School on this side the Atlantic.
I i all other respects, it is confidently
believed, it is not surpassed by any of its
•aster Institutions, with all of which, ns
fir as is known, it is placed on ti footing
of perfect equality,—a course of Lee
lures in one, (icing held equivalent to a
course on tlie same blanches, in every
other.
The Alms House and Hospital of the
city ulford ample opportunities to the
•Student of acquiring clinical instruction,
and hours are appropriated to this pur
pose. An Infirmary for diseases ofthe
eye is also connected with the College,
under the direction of the Professor oi
•Surgery, who will operate in the presence
ofthe class, where this is practicable.
The following is the organization of
the Medical Faculty,—viz;
Anatomy —By SJamuei. McCi.f.i.i.an, !M. I).
Materia .Malic.i and Obstetrics— Bv John
Hberi.e, M. I>.

Surgery —Bv George McClellan, 31. D.

Bv 15. Rush Ruees, 31. D.
The ffo for attendance on each course
is ji : 13. tr 890 for all the courses. The*
graduaimi fee is 815, and no other
charge is math: cither on matriculation,
or subsequently.
The .vitole expense is therefore less
than 8:00 for the two full cour.cs, re
quired iy law to entitle the (Student to
gradmdon. One ofthese, tit least, must
be alteided in this Institution; mid ii is
furlherreqniretl, Unit the candidate shall
have studied three years (inclusive of the
terms of attendance on tlie Lectures)
underlie direction of a respectable prac
titioner of Medicine, —that he shad be
twenty-one yem-g of age—and having
presorted a Thesis on some dledieul
subject, shall give satisfactory evidence
of lib qualifications on an examination
by the Faculty, which takes place imme
diately after the close of each session.
The annual Commencements fiir eon
ferring the degrees, will not he delayed
beyond the time requisite to complete the
examination, that no unnecessary ex
pense may be incurred by the student,
for board. This may be procured in
Philadelphia, at the rate of from 82 30 to

the Janitor will furnish references, with

Ten Students arc by law admitted

Tuxes
The State of Sonth-Carolina having
lately purchased, at a Sale under a decree
, in li'inity, tlic whole oft he Original Town
of Hamburg, the undersigned, in pursn
iiiict of authority vested in them i>y the
Legislature, will oiler for Sale and Bent,
at public Auction, in Hamburg, on Tues
day the tilth day of October next, nil
I the improved LOTS in that part of the
Town, which is owned by the State, ex
tending from d/eßride's Tavern, smith,
to tho Bridge, including that extensive
] and valuable Ware-House,built by 31 r.
Shultz, MOO feet long and 50 feet wide, di
redly on the margin of the river, and ca
pable of containing oOUO bags of Cotton.
They will also, oiler some unimproved
! Lota. The terms of the sale are liberal;
1 a credit ofone, two and three years, with
out interest, the instalments being equal,
and us I lie State is the proprietor, the
! titles will be unquestionable.
The properly now olfercd for sale, is
rceomnn tided So the enterprising, by ma
ny peculiar and eminent advantages, li
; iu situated at the baud of Steam Boat
i navigation, on the Savannah river, on
the South-Curolina side, dire etlj opposite
the most commercial part of Augusta;
| and is the natural, as well as uncustomed
market, for the produce of a large por
tion of the Buek-Euuntry of South-Caro
iiaa; .'IO,OOO Bags of Colton per annum,
and other produce in proportion, being
the average of purchases for years past .
It is the contemplated termination of the
Charleston Bail Bond; and a confident
anticipation iscnti'rlaihej, that a Branch
or Agency of one of the Charleston
•Banks, will shortly be established there.
The place is abundantly supplied with
excellent water from numerous rvver
failing Springs, beyond any Southern
Town; and from past experience, may be
regarded as unusually healthy. In ad
. ditlon to these advantages, it is retom
| mended by anothci*, which is not enjoy -
cd by any place in the United States or
I elsewhere—a total exemption from Tax
es. for Eight years, by the following joint
resolution of the Legislature of Snath
Carolina: “JtiaulvrJ, that all Town Lots
and Stock in Trade, within the corporate
' I limits of Hamburg, he exempt from Tax,
outlie part of the State, for the term ot
Eight years.”
We may therefore, with the utmost
’ confidence, pronounce that no place in
the Southern States, affords a liner field
for enterprise, or an opportunity for so
profitable an investment of Capital. The
attention of the enterprising is therefore
particularly invited; of those who hav*
no capital, and wish to acquire it; and ol
I those who have, nn<l wish to invest uin
increase it.
