THE UIHiUL EVE.
(We copy below an extract front a
work of fiction shortly to be published in
ibis city, by Mr. E. Bliss, entitled “Tales
and Sceldus, htj We have
been permitted to look over a few of the
sheets, with a view of our afford ini' our
! readers a foretaste of the work, and hove
chosen for extract a passage from a tale
[ ’ idled The Bridal Kvr, not because it is
better than several others of the sketches
r which wc have glanced at, bat because
, it admitted, more easily than the rest of a
passage, of suitable length for our co
annn , being sundered from the context.
1 Our selection, though brief, will serve
to convey some general idea of the mer
its of the forthcoming volume, which is
understood to bo from the pen of one of
' t’te editors of a morning contemporary
ofthis city. The critical reader may per
haps detect some little resemblance be
tween the foie of our Cosmopolite, and
i the story of Aningait and Ajul in the
Stambicr.—.V. T. Eve. Bast.
The preparations necessary for flic
! nuptials of people in their station, are
. .needier pompous nor expensive. Don
; aid’s presence being required by Lord
John, unimportant as they were, he could
not attend to them himsell) but entrusted
i till to bis bride and her parents. Again
he set sail, and for a second time depart
ed from all that was dear to him; not,
however, without assuring Helen thrst he
. would return upon (lie innn vl uvi;, that
1 the ceremony might he performed on the
appointed day early enough ty givesuih
elont time to convey his bride to her low
abode before it-.’ close.
Time wails (hr none; the longest peri
od comes round at last, dtough lovers sel
dom think so, till it has arrived. At
length tht! day preceding the nuptial one
dawned, and was ushered in with dismal
clouds and storm; the waves of the sea
lashed and foamed about in rage, the
blighted foliage bent beneath the blast;
but regardless of its fury the bleak bills
kept their bald heads unshaken and e
reef.
What at such a time could daunt a
lover’s mind'—Donald heeded neither
wind nor wave; his wh Try " its “tight
and yore,” and he a skillful pilot, so with
fearless leap, he bounded into ms bark,
andTowler, who never forsook his mas
ter, was in an instant by his side The
hardy and intrepid boatman gave the
reeled sails to the wind, and they left the
laud, alas! with too high and sanguine
hojice.
Aight was now drawing near, and as
the day waned, the tempest • low more
furiously, .V raged at uncontrolled might.
The white spray dashed over the ves
sel, every roll of the waves Hushed with
phosphoric light, and showed to the
dauntless voyagers the perilous cavi
ties, between which they were boldly
steering.
Let me now turn to Helen. This was
an anxious day to her; she saw how sul
lenly the morn arose, and tliu omens
which foretold a stormy night. Hi*.’
could not allow herself to fear lor Don
ald’s safety, she knew his hark was good
iV he skillful; yet she wished a thousand
limes he were arrived. Her thoughts
were so intently fixed upon the morrow,
it almost seemed to her she had anticipat
ed thetime. A thousand hopes of future
weal, and a thousand fears of future wo,
pressed on liar imaglnotion. Th« sun's
place was far in the west, hut the thin
clouds of that day had shielded his beams
from tbor gaze of man, yet neither Don
ald nor intelligence of him had reached
Ardenline. Helen did not entertain a
lear for her lover, but she fervently wish
ed that site knew he were safe, “i know
he is constant,” she said, “lie never de
ceived any one, and surely he would not
deceive me; he is and must he safe—love
with out-stretched wings will guide his
bark, and spirits which wait on virtue
will protect him in the hour of peril.
Night had now set in, the wind blew
louder, and waves mounted higher. The
moon ami stars had till withdrawn,
shrouded in an eternity of clouds, and
the rain fell in torrents, as if Heaven
were weeping at the dreadful scene.—
With anxious mind and aching heart
Helen kept her watch at the window,
against which (he heavy rain furiously
poured, where she had placed her lamp
as a beacon light, by which Donald, if
necessary might steer. Sho could not
think that any disaster had befallen him,
for smiling hope xvith merry step danced
before her imagination; but in it moment
the grim faced demon of despair appear
ed, and poured his poison on her peace of
mind.
“Is this my bridal eve?” she sighed;
“it is nn angry one; all may bo well; yet
would I give the world to have assurance
of if.”
(Midnight was now drawing near, still
Helen surveyed the chaos without: so
impenetrable xvas the darkness, that all
seemed a void toiler, save now and then
hy their phosporie light, the waves were
seen ns they rolled terribly about. Where
was Donald? Hope is the last thing that
leaves this world, nt least it is the last
that forsakes the human breast.—Still
Helen gazed and still hoped, not that if
Donald had embarked, he could be safe,
hut (hat he had not ventured on tho sea
in such a storm: yet, when she thought
that lie had never broken his word to her
nor to mortal else, her spirits sank a
gain. and her mind was agitated us the
night without.
I’he thunder roared far on the western
shore, but gradually and gradually it ap
proached, till it rolled awfully over the
cottage, and echo answered from every'
peak; eael: flash oft he red light rungshow
ed to Helen's feverish sight the uppaling
scene. Another flash!—she saw some
thing on the lock it looked alike a spectre
hark, and floated before Iter imagination
quick as a meteor—the scene closed, anti
left the time more, dreadful Wtan before!
She thought it was prophetic!—Her heart
beat, she gave one convulsive start, and
her mind was filled with tortures.
The parents sat on each side of the
hearth scarcely in lefts agony titan their
daughter; at times their eyes met, but in
i a moment would in mute anguish tall:
i again, as ii instinctively, both turned to
a- Helen tunl sighed to led that hope was
- *dmost dead, stud view their daughter,
;• the very image of despair, gazing so
r steadfastly on the wild blank of the stor
; my elements.
* Now on the tlueshold a light step was
? heard.—Helen darting up in the agony of
5 unassured hope, cried “ho is safe, he is
3 come!’’ and ran to the door—ere she could
i lift the latch a. pawing was heard, her
heart almost failed, the moment she opea
. ed the door, faithful Towler rushed in,
) his shaggy hair was drenched with the
■ | briny flood, and bis large eyes fixed in his
bead had a terrific look. The brave an-
I final fell at Helen s feet almost exhausteJ,
’ antl uttered a groan. The parents, whom
■ the first tone .if joy had roused from their
■ dream of terrors, gazed on the dumb
1 creature, without power cither to speak
' or move—but the dog surveyed each face
alternately, with such a look that spoke
. horrid imaginings.
. Men often in tho hoar of peril, when
one moment of sell’ possession would
I avert ruin, lose themselves, while some
I women act with coolness and deliberation
that would awe the most heroic; hut
i when the hour of danger is passed, they
fall sensoless at the recollection of what
was. It was so with Helen; in a tno
, meat she regained her speech and cour
age—even questioned the dumb animal.
, On being spoken to Towler rose up, ex
citingly hipped Helen's feet, looked to
the dour, and then turned wistfully to her
agv..i: and again; at length he ran to she"
thresnhold, and looked back once more.
Helen read tin's mute eloquence, and ad
vanced to the faithful dog. while her
parents were left fixed to the spot like
two mute and lifeless statues.
With hurried pace Helen followed the
noble Towler, and passed amid the dark
ness, fleet as Unmilia, over the pebbly
shore and rugged rock;*, which in happi
er times site had looked on and deemed
impassable. The wu t storm without
was not equal to that within her bosom,
, and so eagerly sho followed her mute
guide, that she scarcely knew if it were
cloud or shine. At length, more than a
mile from her cottage, site reached n crag*
! gy rock, which extended its barren arm
. far into the sea, up which the dug nimbly
. climbed, and she. not less active, was in
a moment after him. The wild waves
. dashed furi >usl> against it but Helen,
heedless of all impediments, approached
i its utmost Verge: where as a bright flash
. of lightening lit the tippaling scene, she
saw a figure stretched upon the hard rock,
. and apparently ns insensible. Hie uttered
, a loud and piercing shriek, ami, good
. heaven! she gunk upon the pi’ostrutc* form
ofthclover.
II e spoke not, he moved not; then her I
heart's foreboding told the dreadful tu!e,
; that Hope mid Donald both were dead.
, Hie could not longer command her sec
; lings, her lover's hark was overwhelmed
. with the raging .winds and angry flood;
. her energy of mind was wrecked hy the
I storm of grief within her bosom, not less
1 wild than that without, and she sw jutted
i away. The lightning showed that night
lo the contending elements, two of the
purest and must faithful hearts that ever
. beat in unison, while they, callous to all,
lay exposed fill morning on tho barren
,: rock. It was n melancholy bridal bed.
