THE IGNIS FATCVB.
The following has been communicated
to us by a respectable Shipmaster of this
town:
“After several days of stormy weather
one evening about 8 I*. ,11. during a
light shower (which had been preceded
by a hail squall,) a Jaek-a lantern was
seen on the main-top-gallant mast head
and tin intelligent person was sent up to
examine it. He found it formed by a
circle of light* round the must head, 8 or
10 in nmnlirr, and one or two inches n
part. Eneh ilame was about two inches
long, was where it joined the mast head
about she size of a knitting needle, and
the extremity larger than the lluiuo of a
candle, and nearly ns bright, of a pale
blue colour, curb making n noise simiiar
to steam out of green wood while‘burn
ing, uo smell was perceptible. Upon
striking it with the bund the lights were
, extinguished and small sparks adhered to
the baud, then disappeared. In a few
seconds, flic lights again began to burn;
