B. Martling's oppofi;o the Park, on Wed.
nefday the 18th January, 1809. -
Colonel Rutger* was chosen Chairman,
and Colonel Few Secretary, |
The following resolutions were read and
carried unanimonny ;
Whereas it is the indifpenfible duty of good
and patriotic citizens to afford their firm fop.
port to a virtuous government and to their
country's canfe, and coufidering that wc
(hould not permit our feniiments and feelings
to be misrepresented, and thus by producing
a belief that we are diffatisucd with, or dtf
approve (be measures of the administration
of the general government, encourage hos
tile power* to jKrfcvctc in their aggrdlioni,
we do therefore.
Re/ol<ve, That wc continue to repose full
confidence in the pati ioiifui and talents of
the Prefidcnt, Vicc-Prcfidcnt, and the re
publican majority in both houses of Congress
of the United States. That viewing with,
out partiality, and with equal indignation <
the hostile ails of both the belligerent pow. )
ers, we entirely approve the embargo, and
a rigid enforcement thereof, and believe that
while it affords an opportunity to the ag.
greffors, peaceably to difeontinue their vio
, lations of our rights, its immediate tenden
cy lias been to preserve American property,
to vindicate the freedom and protest the per- (
fens of our mariners j and while we lament I
that the violence and injufticc of foreign na
tions have rendered it a ncccffary meafurc,
we decidedly refolvc that it meet# our hearty
1 approbati m.
Re/ohed, That we will support the gov
erhment of the United States in its present
honorable flrugglc ro ma-.itain the national
dignity and independence, together with the
commercial rights of our country, for w h*h
we pledge “ our lives, our fortunes, and
our facied honor.”
Resolved , That we view with becoming
indignation, the repeated afts that have been
committed to evade and violate the embargo
laws of the United States ; that wc express
ly confidcr the violators of thofc laws, as
public enemies, and that we will use our bed
exertions to support and enforce those laws
and to detest and expofc the infamous viola
tor* thcrcof—and wedocarneftiy recommend
so the friends of cur national rights and in
dependence, throughout the United States,
particularly thofc residing in the counties on
our frontiers, or bordering on the sea coast
to form affectations for the fame laudable
j purpose.
I And much as wc refpeft the just liberty of
the press— Resolved, That those public print*
which in a con tell between our countiy and
j European governments, hive manifefted a
I foreign partiality, endeavored tP weaken
| the fence of the people in oilr adminif
tntinn, and hy encouraging hostile (fate*
to perfcver* in their aggressions, have pro
longed our difficulties, and endanger the
peace of our country, drfcrve our fevered re
probation.
Resolved, That in our opinion the conduft
of the party opposing the meafntes of the pre-.
fcnt administration, is calculated to involve
us in a war with the belligerent powers, in
as much as it tends to exhibit us as a peo
ple divided, even on questions involving our
national independence; and to induce a be
lief, that there cxifts in our country a par
| ty, which veil! force our government to a
j ban'.on the honorable ground it has taken,
thereby encouraging them to persist in mca
feres which leave us no alternative but war,
or a furrendcr of ouf national independence.
* Refilled) That the unremitted efforts of
our government to preserve peace, is confor
mable to the true interest of the U. States,
and the delates of humanity } but the just
proportions made to France and England ha
ving been by both rejected, we prefer an bo.
notable w..r, in defence of ouf tights, rath
er than submission to their tyranical decrees
and orders.
Resolved , That in out* Opinion, war with
all its concomitant horrors will not be defti
futc of a mcafiire of benifit to our country,
inasmuch as it will excite into aftion the
latent energies and refourecs of the nation as
it regards the cftablifhment cfdomeftic man
uftftoiic.*;, and render us more independent
of foreign Supplies. That by thus destroy
ing the interest of foreign merchants, agcn r s
and foreign emissaries, to resort hither to
re.fell a comparatively fir.all amount of our
own materials manufaflured and charged
with an immenfc amount for foreign labour,
they will not have the opportunity or in
ducement to intermeddle with the intern. 1
concerns of our government. Hence the
greatest fourcc of that rancourous party spi
rit which has too long been a scourge and
disgrace to the nation, will be annihilated.
Refolded) That war, Should we be con
strained to engage it, will have the effeft to
rid our country of the many foreign cmiffa
ries and domestic traitors, who infeft our sea.
- port towns and whoufe their utraoft endea
vors to alienate the people from their gov
ernment-, with the hope of rendering both
subservient to the views of their employers,
Resolved, That o’tr .Republican brethren,
_in the counties in this (Vale be and
they are hereby rcfpefHvcly requcllcd, to aC
fcmblc and express their opinions of the oca
fures of government, in regard to the belli
gerent powers.
Resolved, That it be recommended ro all
the printers in the United States, who pos
sess fufficient patrintifm and liberality, to
publiih the proceedings of this meeting in
* their refpeflive papers.
Resolved , That the Chair appoint nine of
our republican fellow -citizens to he a cor
responding committee, to communicate with
our friends in this nnd o»her of
the United States, on the interfiling con
cerns of our country, and that they contin
