BE it enafted by the Senate nnd Hnufe of
Representatives of the United States of 4mem
rica in Ctngre/s assembled, That thcte be
and hereby is eftablifhcd an Ordnance Depart
ment, to consist of a commissary general of
ordnance, an assistant commissary .general*
four deputy commissar! |ib and as minv as*
siftam-deputy commissaries as the President
of the United States may think necessary,
not exccedlhg eight.
Sec, 2. dnd be it further enacted , That
the ( commissary-general be authorised from
time to time to employ as many wheelwright!
carriage makers, blacksmiths and loborers
as the public service may in his judgment
require.
Sec, 3. And be it further enacted. That
the cotmnissaiy.general of ordnance (hall be
entitled to. the trank, gey and jfmqlumcnts of
} colonel of be further allowed
at the ntc of five handled dollars per year,
and four rations per day for clerks in his de
partment j the assiftant-cemmiflary-general
of ordnance (hall be entitled to the rank, pay
and emoluments of a major of infantry, with
'hree additional rations per day j the deputy
commissaries of ordnance (hall be entitled to
theiank, pay and emoluments of a captain of
infantry with two additional rations per day
and forage for one horlc ; and the assistant
deputies fliall have the rank, pay and emol.
uments of a second lieutenant of infantry,
with one additional ration pci day.
Sec. 4, And he it further enaSled, That
a master wheelwrigt and carriage-maker, and!
a master blacksmith, be allowed thirty dol
lars each, per month, and one ration and one
half of a ration per day ; that any other
whecl-wrights, carriage-mkerss and blark
smirhs, -be allowed each, sixteen dollars per
month, and one ration and one half of a ra
tion per day ; that the laborers each be allow
ed nine dollars per month and one ration per

the comrnifsary-general of ordnanec (hall ex
ecute all orders issued by the Secrtary for the
Department of War, in conveying all ord
nance, ammunition and apparatus to the re
spedive armies, garrisons, magazines and ar
senals ; and in time of war he (hall execute
all order* of any general officer, commanding
in any army or garrison, for the supply
of ordnance, ammunition, carriages, pen
toons, forges, furnaces or apparatus, for gar
rison, field or siege serviee, and forward the
same without delay and in good condition.
Sec. 7. And be it further enacted That
the commiflary-general of ordnance (hall half
yearly transmit to tho Department of War «
correct return of all ordnance, ammunition,
military ffors and effects, in the respective
garrisons, arsnals, magazines, polls, and
