The following is an extract of a let

lived at Norfolk:
« About three weeks since, a squad
ron was fitted out at Tortola, for the
patriot, service, and sailed for the
Main. Since then there has h en an
engagement on the Main, in which
the patriots were successful, having
killed the famous general heal, a.d
artnyr and made a num
ber of prisoners; in short, the patri
ots are all free by this time.
From the Baltimore American.
The following article is worth oh- ,
fervation, more especially as it cor
roborates our former remark, that
the English papers generally display
•n aversion to the present Legitimate
qf Spain, which, if contrary to the
•pinions of their government, would
Bot be permitted to be so publicly and
broadly expressed.
It is an article in the London Star,
which, after adverting to the Portu
guese ; affairs at Buenos Ayres, goes
- on to state —“ We learn from Madrid
that a course some what similar to
that which was followed by England
after the contest with the American
Colonies bad been carried on for some
time, is about to be adopted by the
Qpsplsli Court —A commission lias
been named to proceed to Buenos-Ay
res and Mexico, with full authority
to offertbe most liberal concessions
du the part of old Spain to the South
American Provinces, upon condition
of returning to their allegiance. A
tnongst the commissioners, all of the
first respectability, are the Generals
Whittingham and Roche, both of
Whom served in the Peninsula and
1 also in South America.
« We have ho hesitation in express
) sng our hope and wish, (says the Lon
don editor) that the result may be
mm'dar to what took place in North
America.—What can the SouthAme
ricansgain by their returning to the
yoke .of such a tyrannical, biggoted,
stupid government as old Spain?—
Tills would he one of the greatest
public calamities that could befall!

the lord Chancellor fop ah injunction
against the further publication, on
ihe ground that lord Byren was not
the author of them, font that the)
were spurious. After notice given,
a hearing Vas had, and his lordship
decreed the injunction, thereby de
claring the fact, the publication
was an imposition on the public, the
poems having not been written by
lord Byron.
We are induced to notice this sub
ject, from seeing poems, with similar
pities to soma of those advementioned,
advertised la this country, as having
hern re-published, and. ascribed to
lord Byron. Jf they are the'same,
the fact ought to he known, that the
public, and especially the readers of
poetry, may not be subject to imposi
tion. The Injunction was decreed as
long as the 26th of November last.— |
If the whole of the po-.ms is like the
sample produced by the council of the
noble poei before the lord Chancel- |
lor, we cannot conceive how any per- i
son of the least pretensons to taste j
or skill in poetical composition, could
ever be imposed on by them. The
passages quoted on that occasion, are
not much more in the style of his
lord hip’s poetry, than they are in
that of Bun) an or Quarles.
