CONTENTION is a beautiful red sor
rel, six years old this spring, and is up
wards of five feet one inch hign.

CONTENTION' was got by Sir Arohy,
nis dam by Dare Devil, his grand dam by
Wildair, and his great grand dam by Jolly
Roger.

and was beaten by Rattler. The sum
fall he ran at New Hope, four mile heats,
against Rattler and otlu rs, heating Rattler,
but was beat by Macliu’s mare.
In the spring ol 1819, there was ...
match made on him for one thousand dol

New Market, four mile heats, and was
beaten by Rattler in consequence of his
having the distemper. The next week
he ran over the Drummondsburg turf, two
mile heals, beating the celebrated mare
Lady Richmond.
In the fall of 1819, he ran at Broad
Rock, four mile beats, beating Mr. Winn’s
celebrated filly Lady of the Lake The
next week he ran over the New Market
Turf, three mile heats, against Mr. Whin’s
Merino Ewe, Mr. Drummond’s horse Na
poleon, Lady of the Lake, Mr. Wilson's
colt and Mr, Maclin’s mare, winning in
three heats, The next week be won at
Belfield, two mile heats, beating Mr.
Winn’s Virginia and others The second
week after he ran ut New Hope, two mile
heats, oeaiing Mr Winn’s mare Virginia,
Mr. Drummond’s horse Carolina, and
others.
The January following, 1820, he ran at
Camden, two mile heals, beating Mr
Moore’s filly. The second week alter he
ran over tiie Augusta turf, four mile neats,
against Uunkum, Mr. Winn’s horse E
clipse, and Major Pace’s horse Rob Roy,
winning in three heals March following

turf and won
From Savannah, Contention was travel
led to Virginia, and in eighteen days after
his arrival, he ran at New-Markel, four
mile heats against Mr. Johnson’s mare
Reality, Mr. Drummond's horse Napoleon
and Mr. Singleton’s horse Kosiusko, ana
wen with great ease. Fall of 1820, he ran
at New Market, was heat by Mr- Drum
mond’s colt Sir Charles. The same week
he beat Stump the Dealer two mile heats.
Fr»m there he travelled to Belfield, ran
against Sir Charles and Reality, beating
Sir Charles, but was beaten by Reality.—
The next week he ran over the Laurence
vilie course, four mile heats, Dealing Na
poleon. The next week he ran at New
Hope, two mile heats, beating Col. Hawk
in’s colt and distancing Maclin’s mare
that beat him at three years old.
January following, 1821, he walked
over the Camden course From there he
travelled to Charleston, and ran four mile
heats, winning the first heat, against Mr
West’s colt Shawne, Mr. Span’s sorrel
gelding Kovist rt, Mr. Singleton’s grey
colt Ganymude—the purse won by Mr.
West’s colt Shawne. From Charleston
ue travelled to Augusta, and ran over the
Augusta turf, four mile heats, against Mr.
West’s colt Shawne and others, and won
with great ease.
