a salutary influence in restoring the

and salutary exercise of the patients.
Agricultural, horticultural, and
mechanical employments, may be
restorted to whenever the iucliiu
lion of the patients, or (heir prob
able beneficial effects may render
them desireablc. To dispel gloomy
images, to break morbid associations,
to lead the feelings into their proper
current, and to restore the mind to
its natural poiv, and various less
active amusements will be provided.
Reading, writing, drawing, inno
cent sports, tending air' feeding
domestic animals, Ike, will be eu
couragcd as they may be found con
ducive to the recovery of the pa
tients. A large garden has been
laid out, orchards have been plan
ted, and yards, containing more than
two acres, have been enclosed for
the dail y walks of those whose djs?
or ier will not allow more extending
indulgence. The plants of the Elgin
Botanic garden, presented to this
Institution hy the Trustees of Colum
bia College, have been arranged in
a handsome green-house prepared
lor their reception.
The apariimmts of the house are
adopted to the accommodation of the
patients, according t<> their sex, de
gree ot disease, habits of life, and
the wishes of their friends. The
male and female appartments are en
virely seperat <J, so as to be com
pletely secluded from the view ot
ea h other.
Care has been taken to appoint a
SaperinlendantanU Matron, of good
moral and religious characters, pos
sessing cheeifni te riper and kind
disposition. A Physician will re
side in the hoase, and one or more
Physicians, of established charac
ter and experience, will attend re
gularly, and afford medical aid in
all caseswhere the general healt;',
or the particularly cause of the pa
tient’s insanity, may require it. The
relations of friunds ot patients will
be at liberty, if they prefer it, to
eunloy their own Physician, who
will bo allowed to attend patients,
subject to the general regulations ol
the liouse
The institution will be regularly
visited and inspected by a commit
tee of the Governors of the Hospital,
who will, as often as they may think
it advantageous, be attended by
some of the physicians of the city of
high character and respectability.
The changes tor the board anil o

which will be moderate, and propor
tioned to the different circumstan
ces of the patients, and the extent
of the accommodation desired for
them.
Patients at the expense of the dif
ferent towns of the state, will be re
ceived at the lowest rate
Application for the admission of
patients into the Asylum, must be
made, at the New-York Hospital, in
Broadway, where temporary accoin
modation will be provided (or such
patients as may require it previously
to their being carried to the Asylum
out of town. A committee of the
Governors will, when necessary, at
tend at the Hospital in Broad-way
for the purpose of admitting patients
into the Asylum, and to agree on
the terms and security for payment
to be given,
