03* We invite the attention of our rea
ders to the following, which we received

the production is indigenous as to Geor

Extract of a Letter to the Editor.
“Through the persuasion of some of my
friends, but more especially from the suc
cess of some of my little fugitives pieces,
I have attempted (tho’ sensible of tin i
hazard of the enterprise) to give a version
of Anacreon in a style of studied simpli
city ,- and to create a new interest iiTTiis
odes, by the introduction of local, or ex
traneonsincident —Fancy. The enclosed,
is a spiciMr.x. This undertaking, will,
no doubt appear to you bold, not to say,
vain !—No matter ; the man, whose ta-ie
you hav* the highest opinion of, has ex
press u 1; mselt “ delighted tvilh inu first
efforts. ”
Moore, who has gained immortality in
the Poetic world, has given the otic to
which mine has its relationship, in the
fo.lowing way ; and which will more fully
Illustrate my design. Thus
ODE XXXV.
Cupid once upon a bed
Os r: ses laid his weary head ;
Luckitss urchen, not to see
Within the leaves a slumbering bee !
I lie bee avvakM—with anger wild
The bee awak’d and stung the child.
Loud and pitious are his cries j
T<> Venn;, quick he runs, he flies !
“ O, mother 1 am wounded through—
“ 1 die with pain—in sooth 1 do !
“ Suing by some little angry tiling,
“ Some serpent on a tiny wing—
“ A bee it was—for once, 1 know
“ I heard a rustic call it so.”
Thus he spoke, and she the while
Heard him with a soothing smile ; ,
Then said, “ My infant, if so much
“ Thou feel the little wild-bee’s touch,
“ How must the heart, a!i Cupid ! be.
The hapless heart that’s slung by thee.”
I must confess in handling this ode, 1
have given great indulgence to my fancy
suffering it to take so unbridled, a flight,
as scarcely to touch on my author’s orbit.
•n this, however, I have the example of
Joseph Barnes, and even Moore himself—
bee ins 23th Ode.
ANACREONTIC —ODE I.
One day the Mother, Queen of joy,
Was miss’d by her beloved boy ;
Upon liis d iwuy wings he rais’d,
And wildly round in search he gaz’d.
Crying- —frantic—now he roves
High Olympus, then the groves
Sacred to Idalca’s name ;
With breast of snow and cheek of flame ;
There, s eeph.g on a rosy b -d
ilis eyes on bea it’ons Cele 1* d.
“ Mother ! dearest mother, own
“ Why thou didst leave thy son alone •
He utterd whilst he rush’d to sip
The nector of her co al lip.
Luckless urchin ! so possess’d,
An smour’d Bee beneath her vest
He saw no'. anger’d at his joy.
The Bee fftw u. and suing die boy !
Loudly he shriek'd !—the damsel woke ;
Prepar’d I'r flight, when thus bespoke,
“ Ah ! mother, look !—behold, f bleed !
“ Pin hurt to death, 1 am indes I !”
Unconscious of a nit i h -r’a name,
The modest virgin blush’d with shame ;
Tied from the weeping child—hut why
She knew not—it was pain to fly !
At length Use tender goddess came
To sooth his woe, and gently blame—
“ Foolish Cupid,” thus sai l she,
** For venue, thou hast kiss’d Cele !
“ Foolish Cupid, not to know
u It was an insect stung thee so !
“ It is not true,” abash'd he c.ies ;
Vet wonder sparkling in ins tjes —
“U in delusion—all deceit,
No beauties were but 'bine so sweet;
T-vis you, I’m sure, who with a da.t
Os my own making, pierc’d iny lieart:
A as! 1 feel the dulcet pain,
Audiovc himself by love is slain !”

Saturday Might George Barnwell.—
H i Phis tragedy is almost obsolete on
tin- m-uicun butn'ds; the managers get it
up about once m a season, either for the
sake of variety, or *o keep it from being
lost altogether- The character of .Mil
wood is son,what extravagant;—yet few,
f any, of our more recent productions
fu;ni»!i as good a mo-al; it aptly brings to
our mi ml the liut-s the Poet,
“Vice is a monster of so frightful mein,
“ As to be hated, needs but to be seen ;
“ Y et seen 100 oft, familiar with the face,
“ First wc pity, then kiss, £c then embrace.”
Although Old Schnol prudence, and
morality, has become quite unfashlonabl:
in these our modern days; yet still, the
easy and natural changes of sentiment,
and touching pathos winch the author has
thrown iiro this piece, may preserve it
fiom oblivion. We do not, however, think
the production equal to his “ Fatal Curi
osity. ”
Georgs Barnwell, and Millwood were
pretty well supoorted; we did not expect
■o find Mi. Ihtrang so much at home, out
of his usual channel.
R tel - when well played, is quite an
amusing farce ; but like most pieces which
( ai flu* scene of action in .Spain, smacks a
little too much of the marvellous.
Wc were qni e satisfied with the pe
formance of Donna Clara and Lcizarilln

Iroughout the piece—lt cannot how-eve -

effect. He introduces tons, Tir Harry
Jlc.Wurrah as one of tho principal chaiac
'*ere, and whether this character is bro’i
forward as an assistant in the plot, or to
display his ancwlcdge of thr bcau-monde in
Belaud, we cannot discover, as he is left at
the denouement, in precisely the Same pre
dicament in which we found him at the j
“ stoning' post.”—lt was, however const- t
derably abridged in the representation •, \
with much of the humor of Solomon Gu.tdy. <
le Andrew Hang cut out —in consequence
of which, the piece went off without am
tokens of applause. We think Mr Jhtrung
improves on the author in this sentence.
“ Mr. Dang !—bring in mv pistols, anil
make haste with the coll'ee.”
He gave it in the assumed style of care
less indifference, now in use by modern
Jine gentlemen.
Mr. Bang ! — 44 Coffee and pistols for two!”
Agreeable Surprise —No farce timing the
present season, has been performed more

go, Eugene, Sir Felix, Laura, and Cowslip,
were well sustained.
1 We hold it an undoubted prerogative of
the audience to remark freely on the tneri

therefore do not hold ourselves responsi

may choose to feel offended at our using
this privilege.—Yet shoal.l we unjustly,
or unnecessarily wound the feelings of '
any person, we are always willing, not on
ly to acknowledge, but to correct the
fault j— -we theretnre publish the following
copy of a note, handed by ns, through the
Editor ct the Chronicle, to Col. Cleary :
“ Wc take pleasure in correcting an
