tin* news so miicb earlier than l»v the f<-

IN otr.uifi'' this project to the palronijro
of tlio public, we b, g leave to be undo stood
as np-ealitif; solely to tlicir interest, as die
only solid and proper basis of sueli an under-
Viking. Our turn interest prompts us to the on
l.npilau, from a boliof that it may be profitable
to ou selves, as well a- useful to the public; for,
unless i 1 be usufti , and lliurefo o profitable, to
tlio "ub ie, it ought not to be, and we aro» sensi
ble cannot and will no! be, piofittiblo to us; and
\vo ilio.hCo e desire no one to ; atrodi/.e it, bill
fmu an exportation of “value received” for
i tlieir iiionnv, or to continue their subscriptions
(thereafter, should they be disappointed in that
expectation. The eo reel principle of all busi
n-ss l. ansaeliins (and this is, of course, as much
i hnsiiiess I ansaction as my oilier) and ihe only
on which 'duty can be safely, honestly, pro- j
!»■ ib'v, o ■.n immenl'y maintained, is mutual
I benefit and self interest. And, (.lying u. on this,
3 ia ih.' resent i nter ■ ize, we sinill look closely
mid actively to the interests of oat subscribe;s,
n < ike host menus of : .(minting our own—sensi
ble that whether they like or dislike ns person
ali'h they will pafoni/.e the >-a e , il’we make it
to their interest to do so,, and that die more in
dust iotis’y and ' e sovorincly we lahoi for them,
flic more general and valuable will he their pn
tron i"r. An I, should wo at any time, become
forgetful of them and our duties, the best way
» (.fcor.eeling tbe evil, mi I mousing our cue -gins
mi.l p o er sense of die source f. om whence we
dn ivo our profits, will bo to withdraw their
» patronage, till it .“hall he to their interest tore-
I, J, cw This will he due to themselves, and
Ifc Dolhing more than just to us. And, while no i
editor h is the right to enquire of a subscriber the .
■lir cause of a withdrawal ofhissubscri,. linn, to com-1
ii,l.,ij( o' him for it, would be to attach to odie s.tlie I
blame, which, in nine cases out of ten, is due on-1
!y to ou selves. Isa man does not consider it
bis interest to continue Ins snbsm ii lion longer,
whether right or wrong in Ids o in ion, he is just
ns free to do so, as to withdraw his pat.onago
font any Store —and to enquire of him the cau>e,
■is im .erlilient, while to blame him (or it, is nrro
ganl and unjust. The patronage of a paper
-should always he given, or withdrawn, f.orn a
■eena-i of the value of the paper to the public, or
to ones-self, without any refe, cnee whatever to
:?he editor personally, whom one may like or dis
sm like, without liking or disliking his j a er—and
ihetcfore an editor should never consider the
withdrawal of subscription,as a personal matter,
in the least, or feel the lass respect o egard for
ilia individual who tvithdrawg it. Its only elfecl
should bo to prompt him to an examination of
iiis conduct, and the correction of any e ore
•fia may discover, and to stimulate him to
greater exertions—determined, at least, neither
todeservo censure, or loss of patronage, so fir as
his iionest efforts can avail to prevent it. As to
the withdrawal of patronage fora difference ol
political or religious opinion, that is a thing
which should never pain, or move for a moment,
A! r.ny honest and independent editor, as, amid the
endless variety of human opinion on those suh
jects, tho same expression of opinion which
would induce one man towiibdiaw. would in
duce another or more to subsc ibe—at least, so
Wo have found it.
Commercial patronage, howeve-, has little or
nothing to do with personal controversy or con
flict of opinion; but-is fimnded, principally, on in
dustry, eno-gy, honesty, and pe severance, in
* (putek publication of all important/ucls, and
■ L. . w yTwwmCTarm!
able and intelligent comments upon them, cal
culated to dev elope their t.nc nature and conse
quences. And, commercial men, undivided and
unprejudiced by pa-tv. will,as all others ought to
do. always carefully examine both sides of every
question, looking more to the intrinsic value of
the opinions & arguments ihi-mselves,thnn to tlio
persons who utter thorn. However, then, we
may differ from any of our me ehants politically, t|
" h le we shall con'inue fieely to express our po
litical opinions, uninfluenced by any man or any
pa ty, we have no doubt they will patronize us,
so lona as we may make it to their interest to do
so, commercially; and the Daily paper will be
devoted uJiiefly tolhci. interests. And they can
not be unaware, that no paper can honestly a
g (>e with them altogether, an • that while they
differ font us in some things, they will probably
agree with us in o'hers, and Ihe same also with
any j.apur that boldly and honestly expresses, ns
every one ought to do, its own opinions, and not
those of a party, or of any oilier paper or person.
We believe that a first-rate Daily Paper, such
as we are determined that ours shall bo, will be
highly valuable to tbe | lace, and profitable both
to Us pat-oils and to ourselves. The great ob
jectof couiMierei.il men, in patronizing papers, is
to obtain tho eailiesl commercial intelligence
from all quarters; and to effect this, many sub
scribe for several daily commercial piq.eis, rub
ilifforent quarters. Vet still, as few, if
any. can afford to have one from eveiy sea port,
or commercial town, intelligence will often arrive
by papers which they do not take, which will give
those who receive those papers, the advantage
of them. - Ami beside this, many of them have
scarcely lime to look through all the commer
cial matter of every paper they receive (and of
ten to no effect,)to find such as concerns them
selves or Urn particular business of this city.
Our object will be to have every commercial
pa- er that is desirable, throughout the Union—to
gel thorn from the IVst-office, each evening, the
the moment they are received theie—and to se
lect font them, set in type, daring the night,
and i nl*lish by sunrise, next mo iling, all tho un
tant intelligence they contain—al
so, the im, ortant ; olilical and other news, ho far
as the time will permit—giving the prefert- eo,
always to the commercial, and all that mostly
coiieuilis the commercial community. Thus lay
ing before tho Merchant, each mo iling, before
he leaves his residence, all that valuable in
formation which is calculated to govern his
transactions throughout the day. To effect
all this, tho pa; or will he consideraly enlarged,
Ihe best of workmen will he engaged, and tlio
eonimo' cial “depa-traent placed exclusively un,
der the Control of a commercial editor. Dy thus
concentrating all the valuable comnie cial intel
ligence f om all qua.tors, the Merchants of this
place may be saved the great expense in
cunod in dailys ftoui abroad, and the onerous
trouble of searching through a bushel of com
movcml eh.iff, for a grain of wheal, and often not
even that—ami will receive it also sojie hours
eailier than they could obtain the foreign papers
which contain it, f.orn the Post Office.—lt will
ho both an expensive and labo, ions cuterprize;
hut, neither l.ihor or expense are to be eared for,
iu any undertaking, so long as they can be suc
cossiujly and profitably employed; and of this
we have not the slightest doubt in the present
enterprlze —at any rule we have determined net
to s, a e them, in the effort for success; and
some generous fiends, who entertain sim
ilar opinions of its success, and confidence
in our exertions, have had the kindness to
stop forward voluuta, i!y with offers of pecu
niary nssislsnee, should wo need it.—We are in
treaty with a gentleman ofextousivo commercial
as well ns general intelligence and information,
for a sale to him of one half of the establishment
—ho tot ikoupon himself the euli o control of
tlio commercial department of it. lint, should
not ti.is arrangement lie made, an able, intelli
gent, and capable commercial editor will be en
gaged.—We shall stake every thing it,.on this
cnteruiize, and we trust the. community is euffi
ciefitly acquainted with us to believe, that we
are not dis;,o-#d to do things by lialres. The
question, then, is, Will such a paper he valuable
to them—woi ih the price of it ! All we ask, is,
giro us o fair trial, at the. stmt, and if you art
disappointed, trilhdrinc your patronage., at once,
without Ih least hesitation.
