The correct principle of all busi iji-ss transactiins (and ibis is, ot course, as tout It 1 a business transaction as any other) ami the only ■fcue on which they can bo safely, hottest*y, pro fitably. or permanently maintained, is mutual, 'm Iv.hifit ami selfinterest. And, should wo at any lime, hocotni J.vrgclful of them and our dult.rs, the best Wat | of correcting the evil, and arousing our cnergict - and proper sense of the source fioro whence vv, Hk derive our profits, will be lo withdraw* thei J patronage, till it shall bo to tlicir inlero*! lo re now it. This will be clue lo themselves, aiu nothi?>/r more than just lu us. Andy while n< editor has the right to enquire of a subscriber the , cause oi a withdrawal ofjltissubscription,to com . plain of him for it, would be to attach to others,ti e j blame, which, in nine cases out of ton, is due on t ly to ourselves. Ifaman does not consider il i his interest to continue his subscription longer, 11 whether right or wrong iu bis opinion, ho is just j as l ree to do so, as to withdraw his patronage from any Store—and lo en piirc ofltim the cause, j is impertinent, while to blame him for it, is arro ; gant and unjust. Tito patronage of a paper 11 should always be given, or withdrawn, from a . j sense of the value of the paper to the public, or . to ones-self, without any reference whatever to the editor personally, whom one may like or dis -1 like, without lilting or disliking his paper—and . therefore an editor should never consider the t withdrawal of subscription,as a personal matter, in the least, or feci the less.,respect orregard for the individual who withdraws it. Its only clfcct ' should be to prompt him to an examination of his conduct, and the correction of any errors he may discover, and to stimulate him to i greater exertions—determined, nt least, neither to deserve censure, or loss of patronage, so far as ; his honest dibits can avail to prevent it. As to the withdrawal of patronage for a diO'eronco of political or religions opinion, that is a thing ' which should never pain, or move for a moment, , any honest ami independent editor, as, amid the : endless variety oflinmim opinion on those sub jects, the same expression of opinion which would induce one man to withdraw, would in duce another or more to subscribe—at least, so we have found it. Commercin' patronage, however, has little or nothing to do with personal controversy or con flict of opinion; hist is founded, principally, on in dustry, energy, honesty, and persovt'ineo, in the quick publication of ali inti ortunt fuels, and able and intelligent comments upon them, cal culated to develops limit- true natuic and onsc quencos. And, commercial men, undivided and unprejudiced by party, will,as all others ought to do, always carefully examine both sides ol every question, looking more to the intrinsic value ol the opinions & arguments themselves, than to llic persons who utter them. However, then, we mav (filler from any of our merchants politically, while we shall continue freely to express our po litical opinions, uninfluenced by any man or any party, we have no doubt they will patronize us, so long as wo may make it to their interest lo do so, commercially; and the Daily paper will he devoted chiefly to their interests. And they can not he unaware, that no paper can honestly n greewith them altogether, and that while they (jijVor from us in some tilings, they will probably tierce with us in others, and the same also with any paper that boldly mid honestly expresses, as ovovy one ought to do, its own opinions, and not 1 those of a party, or ol any other paper or person. We believe lit ,* a Jir.-l-rute Daily Paper, such 1 as we a: e di'termlrm-.l that ours shall he, will he | highly valuable to the place, and profitable both jto its patrons and to ourselves. Tim great oh j joel of commercial men, in patronizing papers, is j to obtain the earliest commercial intelligence i f.om all quarters; and to efloet this, many snb i sc: ibe for several daily commercial papers, | nb j fished iu different quartets, let still, as lew, ii | any, can alibi'd to have one front every sou-port, or eomino! cial town, intelligence will often arrive |, v papers which they do not lake, which will give those who receive those papers, the tmvtintage ‘of them. And beside this, many of them have scarcely time to look through all the commer cial matter of every paper they -eceivo (and of ten lo no effect,)to find sncli us concerns them selves or the particular business of this city. Our object will bo to bave every commercial paper that is desirable, throughout the Union—to get them from the Pnsl-ofitce, each evening, the the moment they tire received there audio se lect font them, set in typo , during the Highly ■ and ] tihlish by sunrise, next morning, all the 1m taut commercial intolligancn they contain—ul so, the important political and other news, so fat ' as the time will permit—giving the preference ■ alwavs to the commercial, and all that mosllj concerns the commercial community.
