The patronage of a paper I I should always ho given, or withdrawn, from a! . sense ol the value ol the paper to tlie public, or j r onos-soll, without any reference whatovor to 1 - the editor personally, whom one may like* or dis-! - like, without liking or disliking his paper—and _ therefore an editor should never consider the ■ withdrawal ol sub * n ipt'mn.as a personal matter, in the least, or feel the less respect or regard for ’’ the individual who withdraws it. Its only ell'cct i should ho to prompt him to an examination of his conduct, and tho correction of any errors ho may discover, and to stimulate him to , greater exertions—determined, at least, neither j to deserve censure, or loss of patronage, so far as his honest efforts can avail to prevent it. As to the withdrawal of patronage fora difference of 1 political or religions opinion, that is a thing j which should never pain, or move for a moment, , any honest and independent editor, as, amid the 1 endless variety oflniman opinion on those sub , jocts, tlie same expression of opinion which would induce one man to withdtaw, would in duce another or more lo subscribe—at least, so wo have found it. Commercial patronage, however, has little or nothing to do with personal controversy or con iliet ofo"„. 1111 ; hut is founded, principally, on in dustry, energy, the quick publication of a!i jmportnniyJtrte, and able and intelligent 'mnnients tqh? n them, cal culated to devclopo their t,"'o nature and conse quences. And, commercial ill oh. undivided am. j unprejudiced by party, will,as till other* y'“*kt to , do, always carefully examine both sides of every* f question, looking more to ihe intrinsic value of tlie o, inions it arguinelits themselves, than to tin* persons who utter them. However, then, we may differ from any of our merchants politically, while wo shall continue freely to express our po litical opinions, uninfluenced by any man or any party, wc have no doubt they will patronize us, so long as we may make it to their interest lo do , so, commercially; and the Daily paper will he devoted chiefly to their interests. And they can not he unaware, that no paper can honestly a- 1 groc with lliom altogether, an.l that while they dilfei* from us in some things, they will probably | agree with us in others, and the same also with , any paper that boldly and honestly expresses, as every one ought lo do, its own opinions, and not those of a party, or of any other paper or person. We believe th it a first-rate Daily Paper, such as we a*e determined that ours shall he, will ho highly valuable to I ho place, and profitable both lo its patrons and to ourselves. The great ob joctof commercial men, in patronizing papers, is lo obtain tho earliest commercial intelligence j. from all quarters; and to effect this, many sub- ( soiibo for several daily commercial papers, pub- 1 i fished in different quarters. Yet still, as few, il 1 any, can afford to have one from every sea* port, * or commercial town, intelligence will often arrive ( by papers which they do noi lake, which wdlgive those who receive those papers, the advantage , of them. And beside this, many of them have 1 scarcely time to look through all the cominor- ( ciul matter of every paper they receive (and of ten to no effect,)to find such as concerns them selves or tlio particular business of this city. Our object will he to have every oornmovcla paper that is desirable, throughout Use Union—to I get them from the Post-office, each evening, tho the moment they are received there— and lo so led from them, set in type, during the night and publish by sunrise, next morning, all tho im Unit commercial intelligence they contain—al so, the important political and other news, so far as the time will permit—giving tlie preference, j always to tho commercial, and all that mostly I concerns the commercial community. Thus lay ing before tho Merchant, each morning, before , he loaves iris residence, all that valuable in ■ formation which is calculated to govern his transactions throughout tho day. io effect! alt this, the paper will bo consideraly enlarged, | 1 the best of workmen will ho engaged, and the* commercial department placed exclusively nn ( tier the control of a commercial editor. Ity thus concentrating all the valuable commercial iiitel* . ligcuco from all quarters, ’ho Merchants of this I place may ho saved tho great expense iu , currod in dailys from abroad, and tlie onerous trouble of searching through a bushel of com. mcrcial chaff, for a grain of wheat, and often not B oven that—and will receive it also some hours earlier than they could obtain tlie foreign papers ' | which contain it, from the Post Oilice.—U will ! i„. Potii an expensive and laborious enterprizo; j | but, neither labor or expense arc to he cared for, I I in any undertaking, so long as they can he suc r|cesslnlly and profitably employed; and of this . j wc have not tho slightest doubt in the present ' onterptizo —at any rate we have determined not I to spare them, in the effort sot success; and q some generous friends, who entertain sim ilar opinions of its success, and confidence * |in our exertions, have had the kindness lo qjs'.ep forward voluntarily with oilers of peeu j niary assistance, should we need it.—Wo are in ’ I t re aty with a gentleman of extensive oommercia ' I as well as general intelligence and information, |. for a sale to him of one half of tho establishment , he to take upon himself tho entire control ol p the commercial department of it. But, should not this arrangement bo made, an able, intelli , gent, and capable commercial editor will bo en* gaged. —We shall stake every thing upon thir, lt . enterprize, and we trust tlie community is sulii erectly acquainted with us lo believe, that vve Bg are not disposed to do tilings by hulas. The ~e question, then, is, Will such a paper bo valuable ~ to them—worth the price of it? All we ask, is. c . gicc us a fur trial, ut the star’, and f you nn ul disappointed, withdraw your patronage, at once, jo without f/tsicujt hesitation. MA.i s rx, «. i. SA l t ltlM V.
