Baltimore, Washington, Mobile, New- 1

the preceding evening. And, as die pa
per will be published regularly by sun

the news so much earlier than by the. so-
I feign daily papers they receive from the
Post otliee, when it opens thereafter, on
the same mornings,
IN offering this project to the patronage
of the public, we beg leave to be undoistood
as appealing solely to their interest* as the
■only solid and proper basis of such an under
taking. Our own interest prompts ns to the en
[ terprize, from a belief that it may be profitable
to uu.selves, as well as useful to the public; for,
i unless it be useful, and therefore profitable, to
the public, it ought not to be, and wo are sensi
■ blecuuuotaiulwillnntl.fi, profitable tons; and
wo therefore desire no 0110 to patronize it, but
born an expectation of “ value received” for
their money, or to continue their subscriptions
■thereafter, should they bo dhappninted in that
■expectation. The correct principle of all busi
ness Iransacliins (and this is, of course, as much
a business transaction as any other) ami die only
one on which they can bo safely, honestly, pio
liiably, or permanently maintained, is mutual
benefit uml self interest. And, relying upon ibis,
in the present enterprize, we shall look closely
and actively to the interests of our subsciibois.
as the best means of pioinoting our own——sensi
ble that whether they like, or dislike us person
ally, they will patronize the paper, if we make it
to their interest to do so, and that die rnoic in
dustriously and persevering!) we labor for them
the more general and valuable will their ,
trouages. And, should we at any time, becou.
forgetful of them and our duties, tbo best vv
ot correcting the evil, ami arousing our cnergu -
"id proper sense of the source from whence \\
derive our profits, will be to withdraw lb
patronage, till it shall be to their interest to t.
new it. This will be duo to themselves, an
nothing more than just to us. And, while m.
v e ‘b tor has the : : pht to en ,uire of a subscriber the
| cause ot a withdrawal of his subscription,to com
_ J plain of him tor it. would be to attach to others, the
| blame, which, in nine cases out of ten, is duo on
* ly to ourselves. If a man does not consider it I
) hia Interest to continue his subscription longer, )
h • whelhor right or wrong in his 0| inion, he is just 1
| fioin any and to enquire of him the cause,
'i' j is impertinent, while to blame him for it, is arro
;2 S ;lnt ::, "1 otijust. The patronage of a paper
- should always be given, or withdrawal, from a
sense of the value of the paper to the public, or
, r to ones selt, without any reference whatever to
the editor personally, whom one may like or dis
j- like, without liking or disliking his paper—and
i- therefore an editor should never consider the
J, withdrawal of subscription, as a personal matter,
in tile least, or fe.el the less respect or regard for
y the individual who withdraws it, Its only oiled
should ho to prompt him to an examination of
his conduct, and the correction of any errors
lie may discover, and to stimulate him to
0 greater exertions—determined, at least, neither
tl to deserve censure, or loss of patronage, so far as
J his honest efforts can avail to prevent it. As to
the withdrawal ofpatromijro fora difference of
11 political or religious opinion, that is a thing
c which should never pain, or move for a moment,
i, any honest and independent editor, as, amid the
■' endless variety ofhuinan opinion on those sub
. jects, the same expression of opinion which
would induce one man to withdinw, would in
duce another or more to subsoiibo—at least, so
we have found it.
Commercial patronage, however, has liuio or
nothing to do with personal controversy or con
flict of opinion; but is founded,pi incipally, on in
, dustry, energy, honesty, ami perseverance, in
the quick publication of all important facts, and j
> able and intelligent comments upon them, cal
’ culatod to devclope their true nature and conse
quences. And, commercial men, undivided :uni
unprejudiced by party, will,as all others ought to
j do, always carefully examine both sides of every
. question, looking more to the intiinsic value of
the opinions it arguments themselves, than to the
persons who utter them. However, then, we
may dili'er from any of our merchants politically,
wbdo we shall continue freely to express our po
litical opinions, uninilucncod by any man or any
party, wo have no doubt they will patronize us,
so lo.ig as wo may make it to their interest to do
so, commercially; and the Daily paper will bo |
devoted chiefly to their interests. And they can
not be unaware, that no paper can honestly a
giee with them altogether, and that while they
dili'er from us in some things, they will probably
agree with ns in others, and the same also with
any paper that boldly and honestly expresses, ns *
every one ought to do, its own opinions, and not (
those of a party, or of any other paper or person.
We believe that a first-rate Daily Paper, such
as we are detm mined that ours shall ho, will be l
highly valuable to the place, ami profitable both '
to its patrons and to ourselves. Tbo great ob- |
joctof commercial men, in patronizing papers, Is (
to obtain tbo cm best commercial intelligence
from all quarters; and to ell'eet ibis, many sub
scribe for several daily commercial papers, ; üb
lisbed in dilVercnt quartais. Vet still, as few, if
any, can afford to have one from evoiy sea port,
or commercial town, intelligence will often arrive !
by papers which they do not take, which will give
those who receive those papers, the advantage ;
of them. And beside this, many of them have j
scarcely time to look through all the commer
cial matter of every paper they receive (and of
ten to no effect,)lo find stick as concerns them- I
selves or the particular Imsiuess of this city. |
Our object will be to have every commercial |
paper that is desirable, throughout the Union—to |
. get them from the Ihrsl-ullice, each evening, the
the moment they are received there—and to se
lect liom them, set in type, during the night
. ami i ithlisli hy sunrise, next morning, all the im
taut commercial intelligancu they contain al
so, the important political and other news, so far
■ as the time will permit—giving the preference,
t always to the commercial, and all that mostly
■ concerns the commercial community. Thus lay
ing before the Merchant, each morning, before
ho leaves bis residence, all that valuable in
i' formation which is calculated to govern his
transactions throughout tbo day. To effect
all this, the paper will bo conslderuly enlarged,
1 the best of workmen Will be engaged, and the
’ coimnot cial department placed exclusively un
‘ j der the control of a commercial editor. l!y thus
1 1 concentrating all the valuable commercial intel
! ligence fi out all quarters, the Mot chants of this
i place may be saved the great expense in
curred m diiilys from abroad, ami the onerous
J trouble of searching through a Imhel of coin
morcial chaff, tor a grain of wheat, and often not
oven that—ait I will receive it also some hours
fijirlli r ili.'iii ifu.y could obtain tbo foreign papers
’ which contain it, from the I’ost UiUee.—lt will
" l, u (jotb an expensive and laborious enterprize;
but, neither labor or expense are to lie eared ter,
1 ia any undertaking, so long as they can bo sue
-1 ccssfully and profitably employed; and ol tins
r we have not the slightest doubt in the j resent
■' enterprize —at any rate wo have determined not
1 to spare them, .n the effort fur success; and
' some generous friends, who entertain stm-
liar opinions of its success, and confidence
f i n our exeilions, have hail the kindness to
" step forward voluntarily with olfois of pecu
niary assistance, should we need it. —\N o are in j
’ Italy with i gentleman of extensive commercial
' as well as general intelligence anil information,
: for a sa!o to him of one half of tbo establishment
1 he to take c,| on himself the entire contiol of
the commercial department ot it. Dot, should
j not this arrangement be made, an able, inteili
-1 | gent, and capable commercial editor will be en
’ ; gi,god.—We shall stake every thing upon ibis
"uterptizc, and we tmst the community is sufli- ,
ciently acquainted with us to believe, that we j
■ -e not di.s; osed to do things by halves. Tim
uestion, then, is, Will such a paper be valuable
