\cicniw ■ their ' on g and trusted friend and
public servant, in war and in peace—and again,
pr opinion's sake I Why, sir, the very men
; (| on ofit, will arouse at once, all their old friend
jjj,, a nd affection in his behalf, and prompt them
(o die utmost efforts to sustain him. And Pro
| scr ipiion, too, from the Clark party /—They,
\vhose watchwords, for years, have been, Pro
scription # Persecution, for opinion’s sake I
And will they now, think you, after all this,
gaizn upon the most faithful, honest, and honor
able of their own lilends, to be the first victim
of their oten proscription and persecution ?
Never! Will they bo so utterly'reckless, think
you, of decency, charity, honesty, or consisten
cy? Will they believe, think you, that ho who
has so long had their almost confidence, respect,
and regard, is now worthy only of their direct
proscription and persecution, merely for the sake
us an honest difference of political opinion—-an
opinion t.o, held and openly acknowledged by
him, for years past, as I, and the proprietor of
the Federal Union, and all others, who have
heard him speak on the subject, all know ?
Never! God forbid 1 Think you, that this more
difference of political opinion, (now for the first
time urged against him,) can outweigh, in a mo
ment, all their old firmly established confidence
and regard, and the invaluable services he has
rendered to'them and their country ? Think
you, that one such occurrence will erase at once,
from their memory, all thought of his frequent
peril of his life in battle, for thoir lights, and the [
blood he hat often poured out like water, in de- (
fence of their liberties? Can it erase, think
yon, those many scars Cant his breast and limbs,
that Will mark him, even to his grave, as the
faithful and devoted friend of them and their
country, and boldly give the lie to the slanders
on his worth and patriotism ? Can it teach those
brave veteranj, who have fought with him side
by side, and seen him often, as “a Lion in battle,
!ii mercy a Lacnh,” to forget llieir common giory,
and believe that man unworthy the confidence
and regard of his country, who has thus made
his own bosom a bulwark in its defence ? And 1
think you, it will cause them to turn adrift, in Ids I ‘
old age, one, whoso whole life has been devoted |
to the service of them and thoir country—who j 1
has grown poor in tho cause—and whose only j I
fault is lui fem less honesty, uprightness mid in- 1
