A CAPTURE.
The New York Gazette of Saturday, the 21st

arrived yesterday from Rio de Janeiro, makes the
following report.—“ March 7, lat. 22, long. 69
40, saw a bright sided ship, w ith an American
ensign and French Flag at the main.” These
signals, are prize signals, and we fear that ono ol
out American ships has fallen into the hands of e
French man of war. The only way that we car
account for it, if our fears be correct, is that tlu
commander of some French vessel has been inU
some of the West India ports and heard the ru
mors there that war had been declared belweei
the two countries. We know, in lact, that sucl
a rumor has prcvai.ed in some of tho Islands, bu
it will be a difficult thing for an officer to justify
the capture of a vessel on a more rumor of war.
ACO’ STA EXCHANGE,
| “ Why should not tho city of Augusta have an
Exchange I 'Phis is a question which has of
late very frequently been asked. And tho ques
tion seems to us very natural. Tho commercial
impottance of our city Is such that the establish
ment of a place where merchant! coi’.ld congre
gate and meet for the purpose of exchai ging
their views, communicating the information they
may be in possession of, and transacting business,
appears to boos absolute necessity. Besides
theftcility which an Exchange would afford to
! commercial opeialions. end to trade in general,
! great convenience would be .derived from it by
! the great number of strangers who visit our
* city, on commercial and other business; on
\ their arrival they would topair to the place
| where they would be more likely to meet
those persons they wish to see. But our read
ers arc m* sensible of ihe benefits out city would
derive from tho erection of an Exchange as we
may be; we will however observe, that if we
are to have an Exchange, where should it he lo- ,
cated I Our*opinion is, and it is tho opinion of
many of our citizens, that an eligible place would
be the csrncr of Broad and M-Intosh streets.
That comer is offered for sale by its ownei ;
and before it is disposed of, for other purposes
than the one we hove stated, could not the citi
zens meet to adopt some plan by which this cor
ner could be purchased, and an Exchange crec- ,
ted before the next season Vr trade! Should,
we be requested, wo will advertise in to-morrow’s
paper, a meeting of the citizens, to bo held where
and when most convenient, but very shortly, as
no time is to be last, if we wish to enjoy the
licnefit of an Exchange next business season.”

Extract of a letter, dated
“Washington City, March 22,1833.
“ There is no doubt but tue Kitchen Cabinet
here, or that portion ot the office-holders who ad
here to Mr. Van Buren, (and they generally rule
the roast J are making uiraugcmenls lo send Mr.
Barry to Spain, am ' put Mr. Kendall in his
place. This move will give Mr. Van Buren the
entire control of the Post Cilice Department, which
L agreat deside.a', urn in the approaching campaign.
It is understood here that Barry bad declared hos
tility lo Van Buren, and that bo would resist eve
ry effort to use tire l ost Office influence to pro
mote Mr. V. B’a election. This produced serious
difficulty and apprehension among the clique, who
are planning for future operations. They were
afiaid to assail Earry, knowing him tb be a favo
rite with the President. They are now wheed
ling him out of tho office, by the lure of tho Span
ish mission. Barry had, a few weeks ago, deter
mined, it is said, to remove the Assistant Port
mastir* General, tho particular causes of which I
do not know, unless that they were known to be
favorable to V. 8., and su-pected of urine their
necessary cfficial influence to promote his elec ion.
As matters now stand, it is expected they will
keep their places. If Kendall goes into the De
partment, they certainly will remain, as there will
then be no clashing of feeling or action. Kendall
hopes, by prudence and management, lo be able,
with the reformed Senate, ne:.t winter,to pass the
- ordeal. If they find that the Senate scant go him
they will nominate some one else after Congress
meets.
The elections in Virginia will bo closely con
tested Ibis spring. The administVation is strain
ing every nerve to, secure a majority of nominal
Jackson men in tho Legislature, where, by ths ad,
1 of the s nows and T. Ritchie, they can force them
to sanction Van Buren. In my opinion, the con
test is doubtful for the Legislature; but it will lie
difficult to give the State to Van Buren, unless
his opponents are divided.
THE MAILS,
. Wo recommend the following to the attention
■ of our city Pos'.-Mastcr; and would als i inform
i him, that wo have hoard other similar complaints
r from different neighboring villages, particularly
Waynesboro’.
FOR THE ACOUSrA CHRONICLE.
, Mr. Eiiltbr You can form blit very little
i idea of the disappointment, we, who live in a
’ country village fcdl at tho failure of a mail. In
■ this village wo have of lath been most provokingly
■ disappointed, Since this route has heen taken
t from Mr. LaxosruEET, we receive the mail nut
r only irregularly, but sometimes no' at all. Yes*
r terday’s mail, which we sent from this place to
Augusta, was returned to us with the same pack
ages we had forwarded Ihe day before, without a
single package or paper from your city, or else
'- where. This unpardonable neglect lam not dis-
I posed to attribute to your excellent Postmaster,
c ! though I think ho is lo blame, for not employing
'• j more attentive and efficient clerks to atten I lo the
-• o ffi ce; for this is not the only mistake of the kind
> that has occurred. The irregularity in the arrival
3 of the stage, is to be set down to the account of
’ the Contractors alone. You will do your subscri-
II bens in tha country a favor, by giving them some
hints upon this subject. A VILLAGER.

Another Steam Boat Lost. —Tho Apalachico
la Advertiser of 14th instant, contains the follow
ing information of tho loss of another steam-boat.
“ Wo arc extremely sorry to hear of tho loss of
tho steamer Sangamon. She left this place about
two weeks since for Porter's Ferry on Flint Ri
ver, and succeeded in reaching that pla-e without
any difficulty. After her cargo was discharged,
she proceeded 40 mites further up to the village
ofPinderton, and on her return, when near Ncw
, ton, under a full head of a steam, run on a rock
while turning a point, which injured her so much
that she sunk immediately. No attempt will be
made to rai-o her. She had about 60 bales of
ootton in her hold, which will be lost. She wa s
owned by Messrs. M-Gcheo, Locke, and West
cott.
This is the second boat that ever ascended
Flint River, above Cambridge, It is the opinion
of some of tho Gentlemen who were on board
this boat, and had an opportunity of examining
the river, that with a trifling expense, most of tire
; rocks could bo removed, which would render its
naviga ion safe ; but is vciy dangerous in its pre
sent situation,
Ohio and Mch gan. —According to the JVn
tlonal hitell.gencer, the fillowing is the pre-ant
state of tho difficulty between those two powers.
Congress, as we mentioned, did not define the
boundary between them. The Senate passed a Bill
favorable to the claims of Ohio, which being
referred to a Comm’ttee of tho House they re-
Sorted against it—tha question was afterwards
ebated with some warmth, but the bill was final
ly lost by being left among tho other neglected bu -i
--ness at the adjournment. In tho mean time the
] Legi stature of Ohio hal passed a lasv for extend
ing the jurisdiction of that State over tho dispu

, having previously passed an art to resist the occu
, potion by any other authority than that of the
| Unit'd Pistes, or of Michigan—the a-tin - G sver

. ed In the most positive manner of its truth. The
Presi ’ent could ha-dly offer a grosser insult to
j his own party and to the American people than
' j Isy eleva'ing to the Cabinet a man who is univer

. ! principle. Bally as the Post Office affiirs hive
. been managed, the substitution o( Aosoi Kendall
for Major Barry, would only tend, in our opinion,
still further to disarm, go and degrade that de
partment of government. The Pro-i lent could

who would accent the situation.
