Charleston Courier,
We are pleased to understand that the Post
Master of this city, has received information from
the Post Master General, that the Western Mail,
by the Steam Packets, will be made up separate
ly, at New York, and can therefore be immediate
ly forwarded by the Rail Road, in case of necessi
ty ; and that the Post Master in this city is em
powered to have this duty performed when the
Steam Packets arrive after the closing of the Wes
tern Mail. A good beginning.— lbid,
A misconception seems to exist very generally
in the community, relative to the responsibility of
Insurance companies, in cases where insured hou
ses are blown up to arrest the progress of fires.
One of our Fire Insurance Offices, at least, wo are
authorized to state, has never refused to pay for
losses thus occasioned; and we have reason to
believe, that satisfactory arrangements are likely
lo be soon made on the part of the respective In
surance Companies and the public authorities, to
remove from the public mind all sense of insecu
rity on this subject. Let none therefore delay to
insure their property on this account.— lbid.
Small Pox. —No new case has presented itself
since that of Mrs. Humphrey ; and she, we are
happy to say, is so far recovered, that there is eve
ry prospect of her being well in three days from
this time, at farthest. She will however, of course,
remainin the hospital till all apprehensions of dan
ger have subsided. A negro was sent in from the
country sums days since, to be placed in the hos
pital. He was not admitted, but remanded back
and placed under proper restrictions at hie home,
some three miles from town. It turns out that his
is nota case of Small Pox.— Georgia Journal.
No case of Small Poxhas occurred within the last
ten days, and from the system;of restriction which
■ has been adopted, the case being removed entirely
1 out of lov'fi, and access to the patient limited to
the necessity attendants, wo do not think there
exists any serious cause for an apprehension of
an extension of the disease. Visitors to Mil
lodgeville aecd now be no more exposed to this
disease, tlan they would be on the top of the
'Currahoc mountain. Similar lazaretto regu
lations to those usually practised in cities, (which
arc hardy ever entirely free' from this disease,)
are in oration here, and which, we have reason
JO bclio i, will be attended with equally sanative
Results. There is no need for strangers or c iti

A At sunset yesterday evening, application was
K made lo the proper authorities in this town, and a
warrant granted against three persons residing in
Edgefield district; for the supposed murder of a
man named Woods, whose mysterious disappear
ance some months since has excited considerable
sensation. As resistance was apprehended from
two of them, the magistrate acting, appointed three
or four special constables for their arrest—who,
notwithstanding the rain, were joined by the
townsmen of Aiken in a body, well mounted and
armed. After riding the whole night, owing to
the distance the suspected persons lived from each
other, the last one was arrested just at day light,
within seven miles of Edgefield Court House.
The three were then taken before a magistrate at
the Court House, who immediately committed
them. Too much praise cannot be given to our
townsmen, for the alacrity with which they turned
out to support the arm of justice.— Aiken Tele

.Mr, Van Buren and Slavery. —The people
of the North abuse us of the South because we
own slaves, yet they support Mr. Van Buren.
, • who is the largest slaveholder in the United States,
or in the whole world, except, perhaps, the Czar
of the Russia*. He owns a greater number in
the State of New York alone, than are to be found
in the fields of the Carolinas and Georgia to
gether; not to mention the crowds and droves
that belong to him in the manufacturing North
and the bestial West. It is not material that his
slaves arc white, while ours are black; for his do
ns hard work as ours, and infinitely more degrad

a day—but we never require them to throw up then

years ago, as our readers may remember, was ex

him and endeavoring to introduce hit colored

credit for some years, and which we suppose

the killing of Tecumseh, and making the Sun

believed to have done. Who did kill Tecumseh
nobody knows, but it is said that O. B. Brown

Cotton. —The sales since our last report have
not been over 650 bales of Uplands, from 17 to 20
cents. The fire on Friday night closed all busi

but are disappointed.— Mercury.

Coffee. —About 1000 bags Rio have been taken
by the trade at 12); 12) and 13 cents. From
600 to 800 bags La Guayra have been sold at
13) cents. Sales of lots of Porto Rico at 13)
cents; and of St. Domingo at 11) cents.

New York Market, June G.
The great advance in Real Estate Stocks, See.
&c., appears to hav&been confirmed. Money is
most abundant, and the great staple, Cotton, up
to a price here, and in Europe, beyond all prece
dent.
The country from one end to the other is in a
state of unexampled prosperity. Notwithstand
ing the Spring trade is over, there is an active bu
siness doing in Ashes, Cotton, Flour, Sugars,
:r Spirits, and most of the leading articles. The Dry
ir Goods trade is closed, and will continue so until
n the Ist of August.
Cotton. —lmports from 30th May to 6th June,
e 6236. The sales of the week, which have been
chiefly made in the last 3 days, amount to about
2400 bales, of which 550 are Uplands at 18 a 30;
' 1100 Mobile’sat 18 a33, 800 Florida’s 17 al9 ;
450 Orleans, 19 a 21. There is no material allc
j ration in the aspect of the market. Holders con
j tinuo generally to demand the previous currency.
Coffee. —The market is generally supplied with
’ most descriptions. The market has been inactive
for two weeks past, although prices continue
without any change. The sales since our last
, have been principally for home use, as follows—
-1 300 bags Brazil, good 13; some do. ordinary to
fair, 12) to 12) : 800 bags St. Domingo, 13) to
13.
Flour. —The market throughout the week has
been unusually uniform in price—both buyers and
sellers have been nearer together than usual, and
I consequently the operations of the week have been
,J- large. Western brands stand only about 6d bet
:l ter than they did last Saturday. Not much doing
in Southern; stock unusually light—not more
;t than one third the quantity there is usually at tills
g season. Western Flour left oft'yesterday at 626
. a 0 37; Georgetown and Howard street 637 a
’ 6 50. Southern now boars a higher price than
I Western.
’ Sugars. —There has been a good deal of acti
vity in the market during the. past week. In N.
II Orleans particularly, nearly 1000 hhds. have been
taken on speculation. Market very firm for all
8 kinds; 6to 700 boxes Cuba brown 8) ); 4to
d 600 do. do. white 10) 11; sto 600 hhds. P. R.
'■ 89; 1000 hhds. New Orleans 7 8.
lt Exchange, —By the last packet the rate was
0 established at 109). Since then Exchange has
° been quite dull at a reduction, viz. 9) to 9). To
e morrow, however, the rates will be fixed.
Freights. —The packets to France got full rCa
■ dily, but to England it is very hard work to fill up.
Insurance. —The termination of the Indemnity
Bill was calculated to advance the sale of Marine
- Stocks very much. But unfortunately the pack
>• ct ship Washington, bound to Mobile, was lost on
Abaco, and with her about one hundred and fifty
thousand dollars. This has fallen very heavy on
underwriters, and has effectually checked any ad
vance of stock gfi those companies that have it to
pay.

New-Okieans Market, May 30.
Cottoii.—’We. have to record one of the largest
week’s transactions in Cotton, that has occurred
during the season : the sales on Friday of last week
alone, (of which we were not informed in time
for our last report) amounted to near 10,000 bales;
the sales of Saturday were also considerable, and
on Wednesday still more extensive: these heavy
operations have much reduced the stock in the first
hands. This break in the cairn that before reign
ed in the market, was caused by something hav
ing at length been conceded on the part of holders,
the sales of Alabama Cotton, in the first instance,
being at a reduction of from )to ) cent: on other
quantities not so much, say ) cent. Since then;
owing to the good inquiry manifested, prices have
continued to advance; until the market has about
regained its former standing, and consequently wo
retain our former quotations. Choice Cotton con
tinues scarce, but the demand for this particular
description has much abated. The total sales arc
estimated at fully 25,000 bales; we give the fol
lowing particulars, viz: of Louisiana and Missis
sippi, 411 bales at 17), 23, 18: 50,17): 107,

1224 16): 108, 18): 216, 10); 3300, 17 cents: of
Arkansas, 495 at 17g: 31 at 17), & 73 bales Tex-(
as, at 18 cents per lb. Liverpool classification,
ord. 15) a 16; mid. 16) a 17); fair 18 a 19; good
fair 19) a 30, fair demand; good and fine 31 a 32,
scarce.
Sugar. —The demand for Sugar, for a great
part of the season so very active, has at length
sensibly subsided, the market at this moment be
ing rather Hat; it is generally held too high for
shipment to northern ports, and the wettlr.rn mer
chants are not buying much at present, only a
straggling purchaser occasionally making his ap
pearance in the market. Wc contim® lo quote
the same prices, with the remark that none but
s exceedingly fair will command our highest rates.
Molasses. —There is very little for sale oil
Plantation; and consequently not much arriving
in the city; good Molasses will bring 30 cents
per gallon.
