SUMMARY.
The Philadelphia U. S. Gazette states that
Captain Alexander G. Dallas has been appeinted
to the command of the United States naval For
ces on the West India station.
Charleston Sank. —On the 23d inst. 30 shares
of this stock sold at New York at $l2O, and 18
at 119}. Yesterday, in this city, a few shares
were disposed of at 120, and 101 at 127.—Cour
ier, Ist inst.
The Hickory is now the Presidential cogni
zance. Some tree of course will be wanted as a
fit emblem of the appointed successor; and a New
England paper suggests the Slippery Elm, for his
armorial bearing.
Thousand Hollars Seward—most extensive
Robbery. —An express arrived this morning from
Haverhill. Mass., to inform the brokers and
hanks not to negociatc any of the paper of $25,-
000 in drafts, and acceptances, all of which with
S2OOO in bank notes, were taken last Friday mor-
Tiing, from a trunk oti a stage coach, passing from
Haverhill to Boston. ,
Trzas—Jl small fight. —The Franklin (La.)
Republican has received information, that a diffi
culty having occurred between the Mexican troops,
stationed at Galveston, and some citizens of the
United States, there were six men killed, whether
Americans or Mexicans, it is not stated.—Nat
chez Courier, June 12.
Major Johv McLemobe having been tried at
the last circuit court of this district, on a charge of
murder, and the jury not bringing any verdict, he
in consequence moved the Appeal court for a dis
charge. On Wednesday last a decision was giv
en against the motion. As the queslion is one of
great importance, and novel in this State, we will
endeavor to obtain the opinion of the Court, and
publish it in our next.— Columbia, S. C. Tele
scope,
-Mexico. —The news from Mexico was brought
yesterday by the brig Bebis, 8 days from Vera
Cruz. The dates she brings from the city of
Mexico are up to the 29th May. Peace has been
re-established throughout the states. Rejoicings
and festivals are taking place in every town of
the whole Mexican Union in honor of the latdl
triumph of Santa Anna. The Mexican Congress,
on the 23d, decreed to that successful chief, the
title of “Saviour of the Nation.” A monument
is also to be crecred in honor to him on the field
of his victory. His next title will probably be
that of Emperor, and the next gift made to him
—a crown !
We hope our friends of the Union Party will
bare with us when we say there is a strange per
versity among some of them, particularly upon
some subjects. Converse with them upon the
subject of their politics, and they will boldly
contend that they are actuated from principle;
principles, too, of vital importance, and would
promptly repel an insinuation to the contrary.
Yet, we not unfroquently see those very men vote
in opposition to those, the very principles that they
seem so much to venerate and admire. It is a
faithful saying, and worthy of much consideration,
that “office gives influence.” Then, “a word to
the wise is sufficient.” —Columbus Sentinel.
We are glad to learn, (says the New York Jour
nal of Commerce,) from the conversation of Mr.
Livingston, that his return to the United States is
not to be taken as an evil omen. Among the
reasons for it, is the desire to put the President
in possession of his views, more fully than he
could well do by letter. He has not perceived a
mong the people, or in the government of France,
any hostile disposition towards us. On the
whole, we find nothing to shake our often expres
sed confidence, that our affairs with France will
be brought to a satisfactory and friendly issue.
Mr. Livingston will soon repair to Washington,
and no doubt government will in some way put
the people in possession of the impressions made
by his statements.
We have not yet been informed by the Presi
dent of the State Rights Convention, whether an
swers have been received from the gentlemen put
in nomination by the party, of their acceptance of
such nomination or otherwise; we are therefore
yet unable to announce them as the candidates in.. s
the approaching election. We are fearful howe
ver, from what we have heard from other sources,
that painfnl circumstances of a domestic nature,
will render it impossible for Mr. Gilmer to accept
the nomination for Congress. The serious and
unexpectedly protracted illness of Mr. Gilmer’s
family, together with a counsel of physicians
against a residence in a northern climate, will, it
is feared by the friends of this gentlemen, render 1
his acceptance of the Congressional nomination 1
impracticable. Should our information be correct
in regard to this matter, none will regret it more
than we shall. —Mdledgeville Recorder.
Mobile Cottons. —The cottons of South Ala
bama which are conveyed first to Mobile, and
shipped from thence to foreign markets, arc known
abroad as Mobile cottons. We perceive that
it is stated in the Greenville Whig, and the state
ment is corroborated by an extract from a Mobile
paper, that these cottons, during a portion of the
last season, sold for a half cent more in the pound
than the cotton of New Orleans. We have in
deed observed the same fact ourselves in the state
ment published of the Liverpool cotton market.
This (says the Tuscaloosa Inquirer) is no doubt
owing chiefly to the careful manner in which the
crops of our planters are prepared for market.
Will not our planters ekert themselve to preserve
and improve that infant reputation which the
crops of this State seem to be gaining. Much
depends upon a good name; and there is nothing
like good conduct to keep it up.— Const.
By a gentleman just from Stewart, who has
been residing in that county during nine or ten
months past, we learn that the Indians still con
tinue their depredations in that quarter. We do
not hoar of their having actually killed any white
persons very lately, but they have shot at several
who attempted to approach their camps. The ha
voc among the cattle in those lower comities must
indeed be immense; wc hear of as many as two
hundred head that have been killed out of a single
stock. They may indeed carve to their liking,
for it has now become so dangerous to traverse
the woods, that the herdsmen are deterred from
hunting up and attending to their cattle. A party
of Indians not long ago made one of their accus
tomed visits, to a defenceless family and seques
trated their whole stock of provisions of every de
scription. This we suppose is not unusual: we
mention it only to notice an instance of their equi
ty, which we presume is not so common—they
made an equal division of the spoils and left just
half in possession of the family. —Milledgeville
Journal.
The United States and France. —Some alarm
has been excited by a word or two dropped, as
was said, from Gen. Jackson, lately at the Navy
Yard, Washington, lest there might yet be a
rupture between the Unted States and France,
in reference to the Treaty of Indemnity. To qui
et all fears on this subject we deem it proper to
say that when Mr. pickerson, Secretary of the
Navy, was in this city a few days ago, he express
ed himself in the most emphatic manner, that
there would be no rupture with France, that the
President of the United States, and his cabinet,
and the King of Franco, and his ministers, all a
likc, felt the necessity of having the matter set
tled, and a disposition to expedite a communica
tion so devoutly to bo wished. We also learn
that the President has within a few days declared
that no want of a little courtesy on his part,
should prevent the adjustment of this matter, and
the receipt by those to whom it is due, of the five
millions of dollars to be paid by France.—Pbila
delphia Herald,
Florida Rail Road Company. —We learn
that books of subscription to the East Florida
Rail Road Company, were opened at Boston, and
in different parts of the Territorry, on the first
Monday in May last More than the amount of
capital necessary for the undertaking was subscri
bed, and early arrangements will be made fir the
vigorous prosecution of the work. The Rail Road
is intended to cross the Peninsula of Florida, by
the shortest and most advisable loute, connecting
the St. John’s River with the Gulf of Mexico.
Lines of steam boats from its extremities, to New
Orleans, will complete the contemplated connec
tion between those two rival cities, and greatly
facilitate the commercial communication between
them. The whole journey, on calculation, may
be completed within 7 days, and if so, will ne
cessarily divert from other frequented routes, most
of the extensive travelling iictwecn the valley of
the Mississippi and the Northern and Eastern
states.— Charleston Mercury.
Hail storm. —We understand that a part of
( Lancaster District was visited on Saturday last
) by a most destructive hail storm. The roads in
. many places are rendered almost impassible from
the quantity of timber thrown down by the wind,
, and the corn and cotton witthin the range of its
. fury, nearly, if not quite destroyed. Wc have not
. been able to learn any particulars as to the extent
| of the damage sustained by this visitation.—Cam
den Journal.

IWILL give the above reward for the appre

self from my house on Ihe 6th April last, and I

put on the Way-Bill, was Joint Tynb, or Ttiif..
George is rather a dark mulatto, about IS
years old, not very stout made, a little knock.
. kneed, walks and talks very pertly, and quite a
dandy in his dross, which he will no doubt change
very frequently, as he had plenty of money when
ho loft. No marks recollected, except one of his
i big toes (1 think the right) is considerably shor
-1 ter than the other, and turns up a little. Ho has
1 boon waiting on the table in Clark’s Hotel tlio
