Sixty-one unsuccessful ballotings for a Govcr

And it Appears very probable that no election will
take place the present session, each of the three
parties obstinately adhering to their own candi
dates.
Porto Bello aud Panama arc declared free ports
for 20 years, and the Custom Houses there and
At Chagrees are abolished.
In aii Article oil the French Question in the
N. York Commercial Advertieer, we find the
following paragraph:—
“There remains; \vn believe, no doubt of the
fact, that the American Government has again
preferred a fonnal demand for the payment by
France, of the first instalment of the Indemnity
—•which demand was again refused—and by which
refusal, France has declared that the last, and
ablets, and most diplomatic letter of Mr; Living
ston, is not to be received as the explanation re
quired by the act of the Chambers making the
appropriation.”
Thompson, the foreign incendiary, was (says
the N. York Commercial Advertieer ) lurking
about in the suburbs of Boston and Salem, last
week. It is reported that he has been endeavor
ing to take a passage to England for some time
past, but no ship owners would allow him to come
on board their vessels. The latest rumor ia, that
he has set his face toward the Canadas—whence
he will proceed to England byway of the Gulf of
the St. Lawrence. Garrison is in Connecticut
—not choosing to return to Boston in a hurry.
Not that a hair of his head would be injured; hut
he cut such a sorry figure in the recent affray—
and that, 100, immediately after delivering an
exhortation to his colleagues In favor of martyr
dom—that ho does not care to look either friends
or foes in the face just at present.
Seizure of a Slaver. —A slave schooner called

The Congressional Election in New York, has
terminated in favor of Mr. Lee, the Van Buren
candidate.
The new steam packet Shark, was advertised
in the New York papers of the 6th inst. to leave
that city on tho 10th for Havana, to touch at this
port.
We hear that Gen. Durr Green, (says the
Newark, N. J. Advertiser,) proposes to apply to
the Legislature of this State for an act incorpo
rating himself and associates a company to carry
on type making, book printing, &c. with a capi
tal of $300,000.
From the New Orleans Bulletin.
Extract of a letter from Huntsville, dated Oct. 33.
“The Cotton you receive from my plantation
in Mississippi, you will not oiler until you are
advised to sell. From the appearance of the
crops in this section, and in Tennessee, I have
no doubt but the quantity you will receive in
New Orleans, will be from 100,000 to 200,000
bales less than last year.
“I shall not make one half as much Cotton on
my plantation here as I expected to ; in fai t, on
150 acres, my overseer informs me, he does not
thitik 50 bales will be produced.”
Extract of a letter from a gentleman in Nash
ville, to a friend in this city, dated Oct. 23.
“The frost of 7th and Bth inst. made great
havoc with cotton in all this country. I bought
yesterday a crop of one hundred acres in good
land, and of one of the beet planters in the Slate,
Mr. P , for two hundred dollars—he to pick
and prepare the cotton, &c. Many of our best
planters will not make 100 lbs. to the acre. No
circumstances now can improve the prospects.”
SUMMARY.
New Orleans, Nov. 2.—Three thousand dol
lars is offered for the arrest and delivery in this
city, of Dudley W. Babcock, late Cashier of
the Union Branch Bank of Louisiana, at Clinton,
who has absconded with thirty thousand dollars
of the funds of that institution. Wc have learn
ed no particulars of the late instance of the frailty
of human nature, and consequently arc unac
quainted with the cause which led Mr. Babcock
to commit this, to himself, fatal act.— Courier.
Among the passengers in the Ship President,
arrived at New York from London, is the Hon.
J. M. W hite, Delegate to Congress from the Ter
ritory of Florida, who has been on a visit to
Europe the past Summer.— Not. Intel.
er The New York Mirror. —Our friend of the
5. Charleston Mercury alludes to some remarks ot
the Augusta Chronicle, on the abolitionism
of the New York Miror. From our intimate
personal knowledge of the Editor of that valuable
Periodical, we are enabled to state that a grievious
misapprehension on this subject, is entertained by
d our southern contemporaries, as in a recent con
versation with the conductor of the Mirror, the
* subject was introduced between us, And that gen
tleman expressed himself as thunderstruck when
ir he read the allegations, a degree of surprize in
d which we participated from the knowledge we
have of the opposite character of his sentiments
on this engrossing topic. We are not surprised
that our Southern Brethren arc peculiarly scrisi
-1 live on these points; but in tho present case, if,
by any inadvertence, an objectionable paragraph,
or a ludicrous parody, has crept into tho Mirror,
* lts insertion, we know, was never influenced by
any indisposition toward the existing system in
2 the South, or by any wish to alter its details. As
4 an act of friendship to ourselves, and in the per
formance of a duty to the Mirror, wc request both
i- of the Journals alluded to above, to obviate the ill
;- feelings which might originate in such a miscon
ception.—Sunday Morning News',
e Mountains of Carolina. —Under this head the
Raleigh Register publishes a highly interesting
article in relation to tho mountainous region of
N. Carolina, from the pen of a scientific gcntlc
-1 man, which wc shall take occasion hereafter to
transfer to our columns. From this paper we arc
not a little astonished to learn that the highest
5 mountain in the United States is to bo found in
North Carolina! It is oven so. The loftiest peak
2 of the Black mountain, in Vanccy county, in that
State, is, it appears, more than two hundred feet
above Mount Washington, in New Hampshire,
- hitherto accounted tire highest mountain in the
Union. The fact itself is not so astonishing, (says
the Register,) as that the discovery of it should
not have been sooner made.
Bank of Charleston.— At n meeting of the
Directors of the above Institution, held yester
day, Gen. James Hamilton was unanimously
2 elected President, James L. Petioru Esq. Soli
citor, aud William E. Haine, Esq. Notary'.
The election for Cashier, Tellers, Book-keepers,
* and other officers, will take place on Friday next.

REMARKS.
COTTON.—There has been an improvement
in the price of this article, within the last few days,
of three fourths of a cent per lb., and, in some in
stances, as much as 1 cent. A lot of Colton be
longing to Col. P. Fitzsimons, was sold yester
day at 15 cents per lb.—hut the general sales are
made at from 14 to 14}.
FREIGHTS. —The River is again falling, and
the same high rates noticed in our last continue to
be asked and paid, viz: $2 per bale fur Cotton to
Savannah, and } cent per lb. to Charleston. We
understand that there is considerable difficulty in
getting Cotton off, promptly, at any rate,
Mobile Market, Nov. 7.
Colton. —The rivcis are yet low, and conse
quently the receipts of Cotton are small. It is
presumed however, that the late rains will cause
a swell of several feet; and if so, we may expect
much activity on the wharves the ensuing week.
During the present week about 1600 bales have
been sold at 17} for good ; 16} for good lair; 16
for fair; and 15 cents for middling. —Mobile
