FKOM NEW-VOKK.
Charleston, Nov. 19.
The steam boat Gen. Tacon, Capt. Tiiatiis v,
arrived at this post yesterday, from New-York, '
having left there on Saturday morning last.
We arc indebted to the politeness of Capt. T
for the Courier & Enquirer, of Friday morning,
and the American of the afternoon of that day,
but they contain no later foreign intelligence, and
we find in them little domestic news ofimportance.
The Gen. Tacon is the vessel mentioned in
our paper of yesterday as the Shark. She left
New-York on Tuesday, at 3 o’clock, according to
announcement, and made some considerable pro
gress on her voyage, but the weather being very
boisterous, it was considered prudent to put back, i
She left again on Saturday morning, early, and (
encountered strong head winds during the whole
passage.
The prarics in the vicinity of Chicays, were i
burning with great fury at the last accounts from ,
that place, and the fires had approached very near |
to the village, but no considerable damage had
been done. 1
The Boston papers announce that Garrison
had returned to that city, and that Thompson is .
in Lynn, or somewhere in the neighborhood.
Thompson was lately frightened out of the house 1
where he is harboring, by the approach of some t
five or six of his friends. Taking them for some 1
of Judge Lynch’s police officers, he scampered (
out of the back door, and made his way to the
beach, where ho stayed till after dark. Os course
there was not a word of truth in the statement of
his having embarked for England from New- ;
York. 1
[From the Newark Daily Advertiser, Nov. 21.] '
The Legislature adjourned yesterday, according
to the resolution of the Assembly, to meet again
on the sth January. Gen. Dull'Green’s bill, cn- ■
titled “An act to incorporate the American Liter
ary Company,” to be located i n Bergen county,
with a capital of $300,000, was introduced into
Council, but has been postponed to the next ses
sion. The professed object of this company is the
“ Manufacture of types, paper, and all the articles
of which paper is a component part.”

SUMMARY.
Senatus Academicus. —This body held its an
nual session in the Senate Chamber, on Monday,
the 9th instant, and closed its business on the
same day. A report was made to it, by the board
of visitors appointed to attend the examinations
of the students in the college at Athens; and a
nolhcr was made by the president of the college,
showing its general condition through the past
year; and another, by the treasurer of the insti- !
tution, showing the state of its finances. These 1
documents give ample evidence, that the college
is managed with fidelity and ability, and is in a
prosperous condition. Reports were also submit
ted by the senators, from the academies of their
respective counties. All of these reports were or
dered, by a vole of the Senatus Academicus, to be
laid before the Senate, for the consideration of the
General Assembly. —Federal Union.
Georgia Banks. —We begin to-day the pnbli
the publication of the reports of the several banks
in this State, made to the Governor, agreeably to |
law, and by him transmitted to the legislature at j
the opening of the present session. The reports j
disclose the following facts, relating to the twelve [
chartered banks of the stale, at present in opera
tion.

Constitutionalist, 17 th inst.
New Jersey —The Governor of this State, in
his Message, makes the following allusion to the ,
printing and circulating of abolition pamphlets ;
“ I am not aware, however, that any Legislative 1
action is necessary on this subject. 77ie freedom I
of speech and the right of peaceful discussion ;
may not be restrained. The prudence and good ■
sense of the community will determine how far
those rights are to be exercised, when by suchjexer- I
cise, the property and lives of a portion of our fel- i
low citizens, and the peace and quiet of all, arc
put in jeopardy. Hitherto they have been used in
such way as to show, that while we yield none of
our principles, we respect the rights and feelings of
others. This is the strongest proofthat can be given
of the correctness ofthc public sentiment among us,
on this interesting topic.”
Texas. —The New-York Daily Advertiser,
says: We understand that the District Attorney
of this District, has received instructions from the
State Department, to keep a sharp look out in his
district, on the course of things tending to interfere
with the friendly relations now existing between
this Gtjyerpment and Mexico.
Boundary I Car. —We regret to learn that
blood has been shed in New Hampshire, relative
to a disputed boundary question. Tho Boston
Gazette says: “At the last session of the Legis
lature of New Hampshire, a tract of country called
the Indian Stream Settlement, on the borders of
Canada, between two branches of Connecticut
river, was by law annexed to the jurisdiction of
New Hampshire. The Newburyport Herald
publishes a letter, dated Columbia, N. H. Nov. 4.
which states that a conflict had taken place be
tween the sheritt of the county with a party of
militia, and the inhabitants of the settlement,
who united to resist the service of a civil process
on one of their number. In the contest three of
the inhabitants were killed and five wounded, and
several of the militia were wounded, some of them
mortally. It is to be regretted that this question
of boundary has never been settled by the Go
vernment, instead of being left to be a subject of
angry controversy with the ignorant inhabitants.”
Massachusetts. —The Election for Governor
of the State of Massachusetts, which took place on
9th inst. has no doubt eventuated in the choice of
Edward Everett. In Boston, the votes were for
E. Everett 4,127; for Mr. Morton (Jackson) 1,-
993; scattering 663. In 46 towns the aggregate
votes were for Mr. Everett 11,118 ; for Mr. Mor
ton 6,473 ; scattering 923. Georgia Constitu

General sales from waggons have been made at

handsomest crop, as to texture, that has ever been
raised in Georgia.
