Cotton. —The market for Uplands, since our
last weekly report, has continued very steady, ,
principally for good and prime qualities. Tiie '
transactions have amounted to about 3000 bales,
ranging from 14$ to 15 cents. A few selected
lots have commanded 15$ ; inferior qualities are
of heavy sale, and at prices at the option of pur
chasers.— Charleston Courier,
Havre Market, Nov. 1.
Our Cotton Market has been very quiet since
the 17th, the sales have been 4570 bales. Wo
look for a dull market during the month ; the an
xiety to sell on the part of holders is very strong.
Onr Stock consists of 31,000 bales, of which two
thirds ordinary and inferior; prime quality scarce
and wanted.

A Practical Treatise
ON THE

ADAPTED (0 the climate ami soil of the
United States, by P. G. Comstock, Secre
tary of the Hartford county Silk Society, and
Editor of the Silk Guitarist. Illustrated by En
gravings.
The interest in all parts of the United States
in the Culture and Manufacture of Silk, mani
fested by the consent calls for information on
the subject, has induced the publisher to have
prepared a plain Practical Treatise on the Cul
tivation of the Mulberry and Rearing Silk Worms,
adapted to the soil and climate of this country
and to the wants of plain practical men.
The Practical Guitarist in this country needs a
directory adapted to the soil on whiclt ho plants
' his trees, and the climate in which he rears his
• worms, without reference to soils and climates
' less congenial to their growth. It has been there
■ fore of the author to make a treatise
’ strictly practical, omitting nothing of importance
■ and adding nothing of a useless or extraneous
1 character.
As making the raw material into Sowing Silk
and Twist is very profitable to the Silk grower,
I ail necessary information for that purpose will bo
• given.
! This work is in Press and will soon be pub-
I fished in a duodecimo of about 100 pages, in

IUCIUS M. COMSTOCK & CO. No. 209
J Pearl street, New York, arc offering to the
public an article which they call “ Rowland's
Mixture,” and which they are endeavoring to
palm ol) upon I Ire ignorant &, incautious,as the true
and original *• Rowund’s 'Conic Mixture,” which
has acquired such an unparalleled popularity and
importance in the treatment of Fovur and Ague.
, Tho counterfeit is put up in bottles of the same
size, shape and appearance as the original medi
cine, with tho slight diffi-rence of Rowland being
substituted for Rowand j and abllough the spuri
ous mixture purports to originate in Now York,
yet trie word “ Philadii,” lias also been copied from
the original on lo tho imita ion bottle. The co
lor of the liquid contained in the imitation battle
somewhat resembles that of the genuine medicine.
'The sediment in the counterfeit, however, is
entirely different; is in very largo quantity, and
has more the appearance of “coffee grounds.”—
The pamphlets accompanying the spurious article,
are almost a literal copy ol the Original, excepting
that Rowland is substituted for Rowand. Tho
certificate of Mr. David Cupps, belonging to the
original, lias not been copied on the spurious di
rections; but those of Messrs. Daniel W. Far
rand and Eli Bbikcman have bricn purloined, for
which acta criminal prosecution has been institu
ted. Tim certificates of Ephraim Minturn, Lu
cius C. tiemison, I)leaner jt. James, and a gene
ral certificate with James Hubert, Lewis C. Cal
houn, Henry R. Davis, and thirteen others, are
given on the counterfeit for that of Mr. David
Cupps, and a general certificate commencing with
James Clark, Jonathan Peters, Win. Osgood, fol
lowed by the names of twenty-nine ether respec
table'individuals, belonging to the original.
Directions for the use of the mixture are want
ing on the counterfeit envelope. Lastly. John K.
Rowland, New York, is given as the originator of
the counterfeit, and L; S. Comstock, 289 Pearl
at. New York, is represented as the wholesale
general agent. Notice the consummate impu
dence whereby, in a certificate with the signature
of Lucius C. Gemison, the true “ Rowand’s To
nic Mixture" is pronounced a spurious imitation.
Such attempts are a flagrant violation of the
law's of humanity, and deserving the abhorrence
and reprehension of every good citizen—and the
serious injury which the reputation of the genu
ine medicine must suffer, besides the great outrage
likely to be thus Inflicted upon the community,
cannot be averted but by the ready co-operation of
all such as fed a due degree of interest for the
afflicted and distressed.
JOHN R. ROWAND,
