Unfounded and Scandalous report.
Recently it ha} pleased some calumniators, to cir
culate injurious and libelous reports respecting the
stability of the Mechanic’s Bank of Augusta. These
reports have caused many to believe that this Hank
was unable to redeem its bills. It is quite evident
that some private pique against the Mechanic’s
Bank, has induced the circulation of that unfoun
ded slander. Since we have heard tliis report, we
have examined the state of the Hahk, as exhibi
ted in the last semi-annual statement of its con
cerns and operations, and we assure our friends
and the public generally, that that Bank is one of
the soundest, if not the very soundest. Bank in
Georgia. There is no banking institution in that
State, more deserving of confidence, and none in a
more secure condition.
But a few days ago it declared a dividend at
the rate of 8 per cent, per share; and its stock is
sought after at a high premium. The stock hol
ders in that institution are, mostly, men of great
wealth, residents of this state as well as Georgia;
anJ their private property is held responsible for
the liquidation of every bill the Bank has now in
circulation, if any defalcation should happen in its
operations.
The Mechanic’s Bank has never refused spe
cie for its bills, when demanded; and those who
arc at all doubtful of its stability, ran easily be sa
tisfied by applying to tho Bank with any amount
bfits Bills, and they will receive gold and silver
fcoin for every cent.
We have made the above remarks in sheer jus
tice to one of the best Banking institutions in
and for no other purpose. We are op
posed to the circulation of Georgia money in this
slate, to the extent it has formerly been carried,
nut although so opposed, wc will be among the
first to expose any vindictive slanders which may
be propogated against them.
Abolition, —The secrets of abolitionism are
beginning to be disclosed. Mr. Slade let out one
•in the debate yesterday. Ho quoted from the
census, to show that the slaves of the South were
increasing in a much greater ratio; that in the
Course of a few years the slave representation in
Congress would bear a greater proportion to the
w hite representation of the North, than it did at
the formation of the Constitution. “May not
this danger,” said Mr. Slade, “ fairly justl y us irj
Using means to restore tho balance fixed by the
Constitution! I”
We heed scarcely make any comment on this,
tt shows that there is a principle of political pow
er involved in this question, and instigating the
abolitionists, secret and open. — U. S. Telegraph,
25 th ult.
Anti-Abolitionism at the North.— Mr. Slade,
bf Vermont, assigned one very excellent reason
why certain persons at tho North were anti-
Abolitionists, He himself was opposed to them,
lie said, “because they were flooding the South
ern country with anti-Slavery pamphlets prema
turely!" Vos, prematmely ! It is not the pro
per time for that. Wait a little longer, until all
things get in a proper train, and then we will
flood the South with our anti-Slavery pamphlets!
And this is openly avowed in Congress; and a
Van Btiren majority, by the previous question,
prevent the Southern members from delivering
their sentiments on the occasion.— lbid.
Death of Dr. Hosack. —Tho Now York pa
pers announce the melancholy intelligence of the
death of the distinguished Dr. Hosack, by apo
plexy, on the 22d insl. It is staled that though his
general health had been good, Dr. Hosack, from
certain symptoms, which his skill could hot mis
take, had anticipated such an event for more than
• year. Dr. Hosack has long stood at the head
of the medical profession in the United States—
was eminent as a scientific and literary man, and
much beloved in New York for his public spirit,
frankness, and generous liberality.
The now Governor of Alabama devotes nearly
half of his message to the absorbing question rais
ed by the fanatic attempts of (he abolitionists.
Governor Clay in the outset says, it is not his pur
pose to discuss any abstract question, involved in
this subject. He proceeds at once to consider that
part of it which relates to the right of tho slave
holding States to demand that the incendiaries in
other Stales be delivered up to them for trial. He
argues in favor of this right, and concludes as fol
lows Baltimore American.
“ Either under the constitution of nnr own a
doption, or the law of nations, it is confidently be
lieved to be our right to demand, and the duly of
our sister states to deliver up to our justice, those
Who may have any participation, in exciting, or .
in doing that which inevitably tends to excite a :
demoniac spirit of hostility in our own households, .
sedition and intestine servile war, involving tho (
hfUrder of our families, the devastation of our fields (
and the conflagration of our dwellings.—But I
whatever difference of opinion may possibly exist
on these questions, if our brethren of the non
slavcholding stales (as we confidently hope,) still
Cherish towards us that fraternal sympathy and
regard which united and sustained our fathers in i
the toils, privations and perils which won onr li
berty ; if they still consider our “ National Union”
as the “ main pillar in the edifice of our real inde
pendence; the support ofour tranquillity at home ;
our peace abroad ; of our safety ; of our prosperi
ty ; of that very liberty which we so highly prize”
—there will he no difficulty ill providing an ade
quate remedy for any such supposed defect by
slate legislation. That they will resort to this
course, if they believe it necessary to carry out
thespiiit and intention of the Federal Compact,
may reasonably he anticipated.”

the recent state of our market will leave a lasting
impression behind it, and shew tho shippers of

America, and the absolute necessity of forbearance
while high rates arc demanded. Far better to
leave the business between the planter and the
spinner, than to take tho crop off the hands of
the former, at a rate which makes it all but cer
tain that money must be lost by it.
