acter has been received from Fort Jones, neat
Roanoke, that a large party of Indians crossed
the river yosteiday afternoon, (the 9th inst.) say
about 2000, and are now on their march to Flori
da.” This statement has caused many persont
to leave their homes a.J property, although, in
truth. Gen. Irwin was misinformed on the sub
ject, as the number that crossed the river did not
exceed 250, and they met with sn :li a warm re
ception from Gtxpt. Garmon}', Maj. Jernigan and
Capt. Bu 1 and the brave men under their com
mand, that they abandoned the trip to Florida
and returned to Alabama.
The Indians h ive made several attempts to
pass through Georgia to Florida, but havo not
succeeded. And as soon as they discovered that
such retreat was cut oft’by tha troops on the line
of tha Chattahoochee hclow Columbus and that
the main army, consisting of Georgia Volunteers
and regular troops under Geu’ls. Scott and San
ford had taken the field and were about to attack
them from below, whilst the Alabama troops and
friendly Indians under Geti’la. Jessup and i’atler
sbn were operating from above, many of them
came in and surrendered at discretion. They are
now at. Fort Mitchell and consist of about three
or four hundred warrior*, who uroTield in con
finement, and fix or eight hundred women and
children.
The only active hostile party now out, from
whom danger may he apprehended, io that of
Jim Henry, consisting of about two hundred
warriors. These will no doubt lie captured in a
few days, and then the Creek War ma/*bo con
sidered as terminated.
These facts, tho Commander-in-Chief lias
deemed it proper to notify his fellow citizens, that
those who have left their homes may, if they
wish, lelurii and pursue their ordinary avocations.
By order of the Commander-in-Chief.
