The New York Oily Inspector reports the deaths of 3,401 persons in that city during the six months commencing on the Ist of January and ending on the 31st June, 1836—during tl.i same period in 1836, the number was 3,332, Ic ing 19 deaths loss than the present year. ASSASSINATION. Mr. Joseph Stallings, of Reach Island, S. C. was shot, week before last, by one of his negroes, his blacksmith. The Negro had been a runaway for a considerable time, and getting a gun, way laid his master and shot him dead, nearly the ( whole load going directly through his head. The ; negro has been arrested, tried, confessed his i crime, and paid the penalty of the law for Mur der, we learn, on Friday last. — Courier of Mon day. KENTUCKY ELECTION. We received by yesterday’s mail, the returns from thirty counties, of the election for Governor, showing that Clark, the Anti-Van Duron can- j didatc, has a majority of 8,316 over his opponent Flournoy, the Van Durcn candidate.—The vote < stands thus: For Clauk, 19,244 For Flournoy, 10,928 MISSOURI ELECTION. The returns, as far as received, are unfavora ble to the Van Buren cause. The National In telligencer of the 17th instant, says:—“We have but few returns, but enough to satisfy us of the triumphant election of Gen. Asin.Br, the in dependent candidate for Governor. In St. Louis county, alone, he received a majority of 750 votes over Mr. Boons, the Van Buren candidate.” HEN. GAINES’S REQUISITION. Wc arc gratified to learn that the President has refused Ids sanction to the requisition made by Gen. Gaines, on the Governor of Tennessee, for a regiment of Volunteers, to aid him, as he alleges, to defend the Western frontier. The Letter of Gen, Jackson to the Governor of Tennessee, on tins subject, will ho found in an other column, in which ho says, “to sanction that requisition, for the reasons .which accompa ny it, would warrant the belief that it was done to aid Texas, and not from a desire to prevent an infringement of our territorial or national rights.” THE GEORGIA COURIER. We presume, from the remarks of the Editor of this paper, that ho wishes his readers to be lieve that overtures have been made by the State Rights party, to the Union men, for the purpose of effecting a compromise between the two par ties, in this county, for electioneering purposes; and wc would inform the Editor, as well as the readers of the Courier, that no such overtures have been made by the State Rights parly. The remarks on the subject, were read by us with much surprise, (as we have no doubt they were by others) for we had not the slightest intimation of such a proceeding ; and, if the Courier has any foundation for such a charge, we should like to be furnished with the proof. NEW COTTON. A bale of Cotton, the first of the new crop, from the plantation of Georue Twiggs, jr. Esq in this county, was yesterday received at the Warehouse of Messrs. Stovall, Simmons A Co. and was purchased by Messrs. Hand A Scran ton, at 21 } cents per lb. On Wednesday, the 17th instant, three bales sured tW*' ot,Ol L wprc received in Savannah, two uraledM ■ from the - plantation of Mrs. is mad® I after ml 1 1 Pouch eh, in Beaufort district, S. C. The qual -1 ity and staple of this Cotton is said lo be very ; fine; and the three bales were sold the same day at 2(1 j cents per lb. On the same day, a single bale of new Cotton was received in Macon, from the plantation of Mr. James Wimberly, of Houston county, and was sold for 25 cents per lb.—the quality said to be extra prime. ALABAMA ELECTIONS. The Tuscaloosa Intelligencer of the 13th iilst. , says: “We have not yet received full .returrns from all the counties; hut a sufficient number have come in lo enable us to say, that there will he a majority in the Legislature, of at least twelve in favor ot White. Upon the testing question, in joint ballot, the majority probably will not he less than twenty. Wc have made our estimate from the best information to lie obtained, and it mav he relied on as correct. We shall give a detailed statement of the estimate when the returns shall he complete ; but should all that arc yet to ho re ceived he unfavorable, it will not vary our esti mate more than three votes.” The Mobile Chronicle of the 17th instant, con tains the returns from tliirly counties, showing the election for 42 White men to the State Legis lature, and 27 Van Buren men. NORTH CAROLINA. Wc give in to-day’s Sentinel the returns from 50 counties, in which Dudley, the White candi date, is 1,559 votes ahead of Spaight, the Van Duron candidate. There are 15 or 20 counties more to hear form, which will probably not vary Iho result very much. The Whig papers of that Stale are so confident of ultimate success that they arc already shouting triumph ! In all Ihe counties hut 13, there arc elected 69 Van Buren and 68 Whigs to the Legislature, and the Fayetteville Observer is confident of a majority in the counties lo hear from. The Hon. James Graham, the White candidate for Congress in the Buncombe District, is un doubtedly elected by 1,000 votes. Mr. Graham was once before fairly elected, hut a Van Buren House of Representatives refused him his scat 3 J'”’ 1 him back to Iho people who have now returned him with a splendid majority.—Senti nel of yesterday. It is understand that Gen. James C. Watson, one of the individuals elected J>y the Van Buren party lo run for elector of President and Vice President, in this State, declines running on that ticket. It is said that he would long since have withdrawn his name from the list, hut he has ne ver yet been informed officially of his nomination, for which be was waiting in order to refuse it.— Sentinel of yesterday. ya—MggWMUUMe SOUTH CAROLINA RAIL ROAD. Extract of a letter received in this city, dated “ Liverpool, Bth July, 1836. Since the last packet sailed, our Colton mar ket has continued in the same dull state, and common qualities have farther declined } a } per lb, which applies to all below fair, and the value of the most inferior descriptions may he consid ered nearly nomimfl ; while good and fine quali ties remain steady, and are indeed rather more saleable, at former rates. The sales for the week ending this evening, amount to 14,430 hales, ot which 2,630 are Upland at 7j a 11j—4,670 Orleans at 8} a 12—3,230 Alabama and Mobile at 7J a 12. The import for the same time has been about 42,000 hales.—Trade at Manchester is in a satisfactory state, witli moderate slocks of Goods imd Yarns, hut from the recent heavy im port here and the freeness witli which it is offer ed, the consumers seem confirmed in their course of buying only for the supply of their present wants. The stock in this port is estimated at 276,000 hales, against 236,000 at same period last year; the slock of American is 194,000, or rather less than last year; the increase being in E. India, Egyptian, Ac. particulaily the former, which operates much against low American Col ton. Liverpool Market, July 18. Cotton. —Our market in the early part of the , week remained much depressed, and inferioi .qualities experienced a further decline; hut or , I* riday there was a considerable revival in thede nl mil, and prices of all descriptions recovered t( ■ the currency of this day week. On Saturday 2500 were sold. i —— Havuk Maiikrt, July 7. s Cotton. —The transactions have taken place r on a very limited scale, at a further decline of I to 2 centimes per lb, on the ordinary and mid dling qualities of United Stales short staple, rtnd the market closed yesterday very flat, with a fur ther downward tendency on these qualities. The sa[es have been confined to 1827 bales, ns follows;—1068 Louisiana, at Il9f 50 to 155 f; 263 Upland, at 1151 to 1471’50; the whole duty r paid. 1 The receipts have consisted of 5043 hales U - nited Stales; 368 St. Domingo, and 224 Bengal —together, 4604 bales. 1 Stock 30th June 53793 hos which 25991 hU S * Arr up to Gth July, 6669 5042 “ i r 59457 51033 | Sales up lo Gth do, 1827 1331 1 Stock Gilt do 57630 49702 CII\IILEBTON MaUKF.T, AllgUSt 20. The only sale of Uplands that we have lo report, is 17 bale.; at 18 cents. Our market at present is perfectly quiet; there is but one vessel loading for Liverpool, and the Uplands that site is taking in, are on owner’s ac count. As to prices, our quotations arc nominal. , Groceries. —There is a better feeling as re gards Sugars. Prices having advanced at thq North, holders here arc mote firm. In Sugars, 12 hhds of Muscovado, Molasses, wc Have heard of no sales, and the article has improved in prices to the North. The receipts of the week are from Matanzas, 99 hhds and 4 tierces of Sugar.— . Me rcury. New Orleans Market, August 13. Cotton. —Arrived since Ihe sth insl., 294 Iralaa. i Cleared in the same time, 3129 hales: making a reduction in stock ot 2925 hales, and leaving on L hand, inclusive of all on ship board not cleared - on the 11th inst., a stock of S6BO hides. The . Cotton market remains in the same uninteresting situation previously noticed; scarcely any on sale, and consequently hut few operations. The following are all of which we could learn, viz: 1 of Louisiana and Mississippi 34 hales at 16}; 44 at 18j cents; of Tennessee and North Ala bama, GOO at 13 cents; and 225 Texas at 16, and 38 at 15 cents. Wo cannot hotter convoy, nn idea of the estimation in which the article is held here at present, than by saying, that 16 cents 1 is considered ns about the value of fair Louisiana and Mississippi. Sugar. —New Orleans: Sales continue to lie on a very limited scale, and holders have submit ted lo a slight reduction, our present quotations are 10-a 1 1 cents. Wo have heard of some tri lling sales of Muscovado at 10} cents, hut 10 , cents cannot he realized for large lots. There is no change in the quotations (or Havana Sugars, and no visible improvement in the demand. It is Iho general impression that the forthcoming crop of Sugar in Louisiana will lie largo, the prospect up lo tins time being extremely, flatter* ■ ing.— Levy's Price Current. Baltimore Market, August 16. Flour. —There has been a heller feeling mani fested in the market for Howard street Flour, and holders are more firm. Sales qf several hun dred barrels ficsh ground, or subject to rcinspec tion, were made yesterday and to-day at $7,75. The wagon price is pretty uniform at $7,50. The , receipts continue light, and the slocks are fast , decreasing. A small lot of Flour made of new wheat, the first that has reached the market from the western part of the Slate, is held at $8,25. — A sale of fresh ground City Mills Flour has been made at SB, and that price has been refused for another parcel.
