The greatest danger to be apprehended from
the Abolitionists is that our people will so tamper
with 'tilein and their principles, in the support
of such men as Harrison, Van Huron, &c. as
gradually to lose their natural horrHr of them, and
became inbued with them themselves. The great
poet of nature has wisely said, that
“ Vice is a monster of such hideous mien,
That to be haffcd, needs but to be seen ;
Hut scen.too oft, familiar, face to face,
Wo firstjtndure, then pity, then embrace.”
And so with Abolition: We already ‘endure’
it in the advocacy of Harrison and Van Huron,
and it is greatly to be feared that after passing on
thro’ other downward stages, we shall at last ‘em
brace’ it. Our only safety, is to “ touch nob
taste not, handle not, the unclean thing.”
But, to return to Harrison and the Whig ;
The former says, “ with the sanction of the Slates
holding slaves, there appeals to me to be no con
stitutional objection,” &c,, and this proves him,
like all other Abolitionists, to be cither a fool or a
knave—so great a fool, as to suppose that all the
Southern States and people will agree together at
the same time, to give their slaves for their own
money, or suffer themselves to be taxed to buy
their own property,—or so great a knave, as (not
believing it) to encourage such a belief in others,
nod urge them, in the vain hope of attaining such
an impracticable cud, to promote distraction and
dissension among them, and such division, as
would ultimately render them an easy prey, re
gardless of all “constitutional objections” tliat
inay now be shrewdly admitted, to bide the real in
iquity & deformity of such a scheme. The Whig,
too, in furtherance of such knavery, says, “ with
Tun sanction or Tim Statks holding slaves,”
and not otherwise.” But its precious Abolition
candidate makes no such proviso as this “and not
Otherwise;” and on the contrary, shews that he
is prepared to commence immediately, by opera
ting like all other Abolitionists, on public opinion,
such “a zealous prosecution of a plan” to obtain
“the sanction of the slave holding Stales,” as, tbo’
it can never possibly do that, may effect such dis
traction and division among them ns lo furnish
hopes of succeeding without it, and thereby see
ing the “day, not very distant, when a North A
moricati sun would not look down upon a slave.”
But suppose Ac really would not,in the end, proceed
without that sanction, when he found he could
not obtain it; could he also call off from their ef
forts his coadjutors in the “zealous prosecution of
his plan,” or allay that excitement of the North
against the South, and the Southern States and
people against each other, which, if not allayed,
would not only divide the country, but overwhelm
the whole South in massacre and ruin'd Who
docs not see that he could not restrain them, or
that excitement-, if disposed to recode himself, and
that his scheme is therefore as deeply fraught with
misery and ruin to ns, as any other 1
But; if he Uad uttered no other Word on the
&tth)ect, is rtot the concluding sentence of the quo
tation, that “we might look forward to the day,
net very distditl, when a North American sun
would liol look ddwn upon a slave,” the very lan
guage of wild enthusiasm aiid fanaticism; and
does it not plainly shew that lib looksupon slave
ry wiih deep abhorrence, and considers it a dis
grace to the country J Is such a fanatic fit to pre
side over the interests rtf slaveholders, or capable
‘of extending lo them equal and impartial justice;
and is it not an insult to those who look upon
slavery, not as a disgrace, but a signal and provi
dential blessing, lo ask of them their votes for
such a man d
AVc earnestly and anxiously’ entreat the Whig,
and all its Southern coadjutors, to pause and re
flect upon the ruinous consequences of support
ing such an Abolitionist as Harrison, in the midst
of slaves and slaveholders, and to abandon liim
and all such to the fanatic enemies of the South,
sere they and their destructive principles obtain
an admitted foothold among us.

Msssns, Ehitous: —-I attended a Cotton pack
ing, at the Plantation of Col. Jambs H. Ham
mond, Silver Bluff, oil Saturday, the 241 h ofSep
tembor, and as. the achievement far exceeded any
thing of the kind ever beforb performed, I send
you art account of it for publication;
WithoUt changing the hahds, or irtiilcs/lO bales,
averaging between 320 and 030 in weight, were
packed before t 3 o'clock. A respite of rtll hour
and 4 halfwits given, wlieii the packing was re
commenced ; and before half past 4 o’clock, they
completed the GOth bale ! During the afternoori
when it may he reasonably supposed that tile
hands were fatigued and less active than in the
morning, they turned out a bile in the unprece
dented time df 6) minutes! As 10 and 15 bales
is an ordinary days Work, and 30 bales the largest
number ever before packed in a day, (at least in
this section of country,) it may be as well to in
form Planters what can be done, by an active
and industrious overseer, in coriimatid of efficient
operatives. It is true that the Screw is not an in
ferior one, yet it admits of numerous improve
ments ; and when they arc made, Ido not hesi
tate to say, that one hundred bales can he packed
in a day, without difficulty. H.
LATER FROM ENGLAND.
The ship John Taylor, arrived from Liver
pool on the Gth inst. she sailed on the 30th ult.
The most interesting news received by this
Vessel is that of a dissolution of the Ministry of
Louis Phillips. It docs not appear settled ap the
last accounts whether the whole of tire ministers
had resigned, or M. Thiers, the President of the
Council only. It is however a matter of little
consequence.' M. Thiers was the life and soul of
the King’s Cabinet, and his retirement is virtual
ly the dismemberment of the Ministry. The
Muse which has led to the resignation of M.
Thiers, appears to be a difference ot opinion be
tween him and the King on the question of the
Immediate intervention of France in "Spain, in
favour of the Queen. 4’he King persisting In
opposing it in opposition to his Minister. And
really when we consider the contradictory ele
ments which make tip the different parties in
Spain, the indomitable spirit of the Spanish peo
ple, wo cannot wonder that the habitual caution
of the king leads him to shrink from embarking
in a cause, in which, when once engaged, be
cannot foresee, to what extremes lie may ba com
pelled to go.
Among the important subjects that will come
before the approaching session of the Legislator,
for its consideration, the details in the organiza
tion of the court of appeals, and the disposition of
upwards of $900,000, apportioned out of the sur
puls funds, under the late act of Congress, to
Georgia, will be among those of more engrossing
interest. Our sister States are already, from the
impulse of public feeling, endeavoring to take the
lead in monopolising the groat trade of the West,
and availing themselves of all possible advantages
from our inertness and the want of concert of ac
tion on the part of out citizens. Georgia is not
surpassed in natural advantages and resources by
any of them, and it is high time a judicious sys
tem of internal improvement was adopted, that
would secure at least her own trade, and perma
nently promote the interest ol hot citizens at large.
: | Should the present opportunity bo permitted to
. | pass unimproved, she may perhaps awake from
j her lethargy when her trade and resources may
all bo lost lo her. For, should she not reduce the
1 ntimber df members in her legislature, and be go
verned by rrioru wisdom and foresight in her leg
islation, she will 8100 find herself iri a rctrdgrrtdc
march, without her present ro ourcos, or nieans
of improvement— -Sonthei-n Recorder,
From the Georg'a Journal.
TYPOGRAPHICAL INSINUATION.
.Mr. Editor —l sometimes skim over the t-.r
--changes, and happening to look over the .Augus
ta Constitutionalist, the other day, I observed
1 an innovation of tbo mode of setting up the elec
tion returns. Gen. Glascock’s name is set tip
. half in t(a//r and half in roman. While an i rules:
informs the reader that the names in italic arc
Union men ! and an asterisk• declares, that the
names thus marked were on both tickets. Gen.
■ Walker was on both tickets as well as Gen. Glas
, cock, yet his name though starred, is all italic.
Docs the Constitutionalist mean by (bis typogra
phical inuendo , that Gen. Glascock is only half a
■ Union man ? This italic praise and roman in
sinuation, contains more than meets the eye;,hut
, we think it unhandsome to deal in hints. Wo
did not believe the Constitutionalists’ minion
j would have exhibited so foul a proof of incipient
[hostility ; wo arc quite sure no nonpareil of any
' character would suffer itself to be locked up in
1 such a form. LONG PRIMER.

MICHIGAN.
Detroit, Sept. 28, 1830.
Dear Sir, —Wo have the cheering intelligence
, by a gentleman this moment from Ann Arbour,
that the final vote was taken yesterday in the
Convention; and the proposition to admit Michi
gan on condition of her assent to the boundary
line as fixed by that body, was negatived by a
majority of seven. Never was there a more right

j From a paggonger wo learn that the forces under
j Gov. Call had met with some Indians near Fort
Drane, and after some skirmish with them on
Monday last, drove them into the hammocks, the
Indians left four of their dead on the field. Next
day (Tuesday) another skirmish took place, with
similar results, the Indians leaving five dead on
the field. The gentleman, from whom wo derived
this information, understood that none of our men
were injured, Major Pierce was on his way to
join Gen. Call, at Volusia.— Savannah Geor

The Philadclpha Inquirer of the 31st ultimo,
rebates the following touching incident; which oc
curred at the Chcsnul st. Theatre:—
On Monday evening last Miss Cooper recited
the celebrated “ scene in a private, mad-houao,”
from the pen of Moak Lewis. The entertain
ments of the evening wore for her benefit, and
the Theatre crowded. As she progressed with
the recitation, lie- feelings became excited to the
Very highest pitch. Apptuuscd followed applause
from the admiring and equally excited audience,
and when tile curtain fell, an enthusiastic burst
followed tire exit of the charming actress. Im
agine the horror tind consternation of the audience
however, when the echoes of their own voice ha
ving died away, they heard Miss Cooper shrieking
in the most agonizing manner. So exhausted had
she become by lira mental excitement produced
by her exertion, and so completely had she identi
fied herself with the character personated, that for
a time, she lost the mastery of her mind, and
hence the scene that ensued. Her father was
dreadfully agitated, and several minutes elapsed
before this promising actress was “ herself again.’’
