May 28 7 Highly Important from Texas We have it now in our power, on good ^rounds, however appearances may be to tiic contrary, to nssert, that the Executive of Texas, so for from opposing -the popular will in relation tonnncxnlion, will co-opcr- :,ic with it. All the efforts of Great Brit ain or any other forcignpower to prevent it ,. r to influence the Texan government, will lie abortive. We predict likewise, that the troops now garisoned at Foil Jessup will be ordered to the Rio Grande in less than one month. I Corrcsnmkner of the delT r-cmian Rnvllirnn.'] 1 GALVESTON, 22d May, 1845. The proclamation for a Convent ton is out. The ratio of teprcscntalion recommended by the President, is ntor 1 acceptable than was anticipated, and tht* country is organ izing for the election of delegates. The ini|iortani event of the day is tnc arrival of Com. Stockton. Two days after he anch ored here, Colonel Love received informa tion from a reliable source from the West, that the Mexican force on the Rio Grande would attempt to occupy and maintain the iineoftlic Neuccs, at 111c moment of the completion of annexation. This news he communicated to the Commodore, who ad vised an immediate occupation of that line l.y the Texan troops, otiering his co-opera- ti'on liv sea. The Commodore, Col. Love, i n!. McKiney, Samuel Williams, and C. A. Wicklifle, late Post Master Gen. of the U. S. will sail to-morrow to obtain intelligence, .-<ml will return in n week. In the mean time, Major Gen. Sherman is to visit the Executive and ask his approval and co-op- eiatiori. Should he refuse, Sherman con tends lie is empowered by the general terms of an existing law to net independently of the President, and he trill da so. lie "will call three thousand men into immediate service to rendezvous at Corpus Christi, mid tiie call irill be promptly obeyed. Things here arc in a great ferment. From the Fhiladrlpliia Sun. Latesf from Cnlafbrnia. The revolution is progressing in Upper |(!.il;ifumi;i, and the Mexican authorities TJi.-ne been driven from that portion of tiic “!. pulilic. The Revolutionists were about 'itfiinizing a republican government, with |n President and a representative Lcgisla- tnodelcd after the Legislature of the |Uniied States. The Revolution in Upper Calafornia is paid to have commenced without the loss of 1 single life. We recommend to the Iuferior court, to take jicli stops as will enable our county to participate intlie general school fund aod if necessary to assess a lax on the .State tax, not to exceed twelve ami a half per cent, for such purpose. Convinced as we are of the importance of school in?, wo respectfully ask of the Interior court, the fulfillment of this recommrada- tion, and further, we recommend the Inferior court to throw out of the Grand Jury Box, the tunic of RobL Greer, for ungvntk manly conduct as a Juror. GEORGIA, Balter County. XKTE, the Grand Jury of Baker County, for June * * term of 1846, in making its General Present ments, beg icave to place first in order, the great question of taxation. The present system of returns is utterly unjust, and the only excuse that the Jury can rearonably make for its first establishment and continuance thus far, grows nut of llic late unsettled condition of tlie State, when large portions of it were in tho hands of its original Indian possessor*. It is tliougbt unnecessary to set forth the details upon vhich the injustice of the system is established; but imply to recommend the method of effecting a change in it. This istu have all returns of property real or personal, improved or unimproved, made in the county in which it is located, and the tax there on paid in said county, that the per centagr belong ing to county purposes may be applied in Ahe dis tricts in which they accrue. The Grand Jury of Baker county takes the liberty of recommending this subject to the grand juries throughout the state, that it may rccieve the earliest attention of the |:co- p!e. and they request tie (ii irons of Baker County particularly', to instruct their Representative in the General Assembly to propose an amendment of the present law at the next meeting of that body. The second subject ol importance, is that Reads and Bridge*. It is recommended that the Justices of tiic Inferior Court enforce more rijpdly the per formance of the duties of Commissioners. Tho third question alter the public support and interrommeniralion, is die education and mainte nance of the indigent and orphaned of the county.— It appears by die report of the committee on this branch of their duties, that there has been no receipt from the State funds, applied for this purpose since the y«nr 1841, anil this appears to proceed from die nrgfectof the Jnsdees of die Inferior Court, in not returning to the Executive the subl ets of the char ity. within their respective jurisdictions. This is regarded as a grave charge, and should ho promptly” and carefully attended to by said court. The JOHN BILBO. ATtORNEY AT LAW. ALBAMV GA.
