.. j|v sweet girl, where are yon going?” said an
_ ,i jj.lv to a pious child of God, as she passed her
- «i her way to the neighboring chapel. “Ihavc
if alter dayfound J ou wending your way fo church,
,'lhiii early hour, and for tho life of me I cannot
vine the object.” Tho girt paused, looked at the
ci» neighboring clock, and credulously looking
into the face of tho enquirer, answered, “ to pray-
,3 wiitun, to early prayers.”
.. To prayers!” rejoined the querist, “and what
nin you by prayers ? I am much nearer than you,
m J much more able to spend my time idly, and yet
I Jo not go to prayers.”
. i inoiv not tvhat yon call idly, madam,” said the
-jilcn, 11 f° r really I lave never felt other than a
at of time for tho duties of the holy place.”
- \ u jut of tune to do what ?” continued tlio cl
t jnrtv; “ b run over the Lord’s prayer, if you
t there before the pastor, and if not to listen lor
ill as hour to bis interminable jargon; and this is
lit you go to church for is it ?”•
The girl lad boon brought up carefully by the' pi*

race it was that one coiue before the ether with
■ and this was the only reason. But how could
.hr nplain this to tire good lady before Irer ? She
remained only more and more perplexed,
■ the questions put to her appeared more amt more
xnp’.o. At length die thought crossed her mind that
■ utighi be lire effort of the evil one to misguide
>t, end hastily pulling down her bonnet more close*
h ever her face, she quickened her pace towards the
oroflhe iiolv place; tbeold woman, as she left
saying loud enough to be heard, “ Ah, here is
tbr fruit of your lioly instruction! Sisters of Char
ily indeed!—sisters of superstition rather, or much
ewe, sisters of criminal indulgence; for however
innocent that poor girl may be at present, slio earn
-! t:n I spiritual lood enough, as it is called, in pray-

iast accompany so large a concourse of youthful
■rsuis at so early an hour of the day.”
We say loud enough to be heard, not of course by
•lie girt herself, but by an elderly gentleman, who
happened also tc bare anticipated the day by an hour
nr two earlier than usual. This person was nei-
liier lient on prayer hearing nor upon the mammon

of the death of the late Honorable Justice Stoxv.

Report : . •
The Committee upon whom has been devolved the
melancholy duty of drafting a Minute which may
wem.to testify {he respect felt by the Court and Bar
of tbe South-Western Circuit of Georgia, for the
memory of the Honorable Joszrn StoUt, Mg leave
to say, that the afflictive Providence by which the
Bench of tho Supreme Coart of the United States
has lately been deprived of its brightest ornament,
and tbe country ot its ablest and most profound ju
rist, must be regarded among the heaviest calamities,
with which our Republic has been visited from its
foundation to the present hour. - Whether wo look
to bis long and brilliant carreer of active public ser
vice as Judge of the Supreme Court, the imperislm-
qlc lustre which his patient and laborious investiga
tions have thrown around the fabric of American
Jurisprudence, or his cheerful and unwearied dili
gence in.diffusing liberal and enlightened views
through all ranks of our profession, wc feel justified
in exptessing the opinion, that in tho death of the
learned, amiable, and upright Story, far the most
useful and brilliant star of our Judicial System has
been stricken from its orbit. Be it resolved, there
fore:
That wliilo wc how submissively to tlio inscruti-
ble behests of the Almighty, wc will imitate tho ex
ample of the matchless Son of God, and cherish the
liveliest sympathies for the surviving relatives of the
deceased.
That while we will so far conform to common ti-
sago as to'wear crape on our left arms for thirty days,
we expect to wear about our hearts for life, tlio sin-
cerest gratitude for tho invaluable public cervices
of the deceased.
That these proceedings be spread upon the min
utes of the Court, as a perpetual memorial of our
high estimate of the eminent talents and public worth
of this distinguished American Jurist.
That a copy of tbeso resolutions be furnished to
the Editors of the Albany Courier, Albany Patriot,
and Macon Mescngor for publication.
Which Report and Resolutions were read, after
which the Court immediately adjourned.

would train him.

The gentleman was indeed one of those who could

an resolved to have his whim satisfied; be there-
■'•re stepped into the little store room, and took up
moral articles. After paying for these, he waited
ratil the careful vender had recorded the sale, and

“I. " What, my dear madam, intend you to do with

ibis is my vocation.” Tho gentleman then asked

"' Ibe proceeds of the year, and how many years it
would require to dispose of all tho merchandize at
9 proportional rite. “ And now my dear madam,
bow can you reconcile yourself to rising by day-light
in the morning, spending fourteen long hours in this
little room, peering at every passer-by to see if his
•hilling can be made yours, and then retiring to a
restless and dissatisfied lied for so much per day ?”•—
Our good dame found herself somewhat in tho situ

tlio philosophic querist, * Poor mortal*, poor blind
worm of tho eardi; here is a young, truthful, enthu

that she may realize something iff which her spirit,
her young life has dreamed; here an old crane, craf
