RUSSIAN MARRIAGES.
Marriages in Russia are curious. The
priest meets the parlies at the door of the
church. The relatives also enter, having
received the benediction of the priest.—
They go with him to the altar, where he
puts wax candles in their hands—a crown
is placed on the bt idegrooom’s head.—*
The priest puts a ring upon one of their
fingers, and it is passed round till it i3
placed on the finger of the bride. He
goes round the altar, followed hy the
Iriends and the couple—he gives them
his benediction. It takes place ia the
richest churches in Russia. The sma
ceremonies are performed on a marriage
iu the family of the Emperor, escepl that
the crown is held above, not placed on
their heads. Being once present at a
marriage of the royal family, the crown
was held up by hoys, and it was amusing
lo see them stretching themseive i to hold
it up. The music was delightful. I have
frequently heard the choir of the Pope,
but it is nothing when compared with
what I heard at their marriage. I never
heard music so touching. Their dresses
were beautiful. The bride had a train
12 feet long, made of rich velvet, and lin
ed throughout with ermi.'.e and it took
live men to hear her train, and as she
moved round the altar, followed her. It
was attaened to her dress below the shoul
der. There were many things about it

THE ERROR IN THE TREASURY
ESTIMATES.
The manner in which the error was
made in the estimates contained in the
report of the Secretary, was by o mi ling
to insert in the estimate of receipt# and
expenditures for the fiscal year ending
June 30, 1848, embodied in the report,
four item9 of receipts for treasury notes
and loans, showing tlie receipts and ex
penditures for the quaitcr ending Seplem*
her* 1847, prepared in the office uf tfio
Register of the Treasury, to accompany
said report. These four items amount in
the aggregate lo the sum of$6,916,078.
If this omission had not been made, tlie
estimated means for the fiscal year ending
30th June,‘1S4S, would have been in*
creased by that amount, and would con
sequently reduce the estimated excess of
expenditures over the means on the 1st
July, IS4S, from the sum of $15,729,-114-
27, to the sum of $S,814,036 27, and also
the estimated excess of expenditures over
the means on the 1st July, 1849, from the

be spent here, and I think the new year
will overtake us at. this place.
Colonel Seymour and Captain Hervey,
and Captain Foster, with liis company, all
in good health, are at this place, eating
green beef, not killed long enough to get
cold. There is not a particle of salt pro
visions tn be had tor love or money.
Captain Hervey has been seriously sick,
and was so feeble this morning as not to
be able to eat but six or eight hard boiled
eggs, and so fretting and fuming because
lie cant overtake his company. Col. Sey
mour is impatient £0 go forward to liis
battalion, supposed to be either at Perote
or Puebla ; hut the Colonel and Captains
are resttained by those whose right it is
to command, and I believe very properly.
We are still without news from Mexi
co, and madam Rumor that blessed dame,
seems to have exhausted her inventive
powers, or she has become ill-natured
and refuses to amuse us, as in by-gone
days, with marvelous stories of the ene
my’s doings. Adieu, J. S. C.

ANCIENT MINEST
Dr. Wilson, in liis travels through tha
lands of the Bible, last year discovered
on the route from the Red Sea to Mount
Sinafi the immense mountains alluded to
by the author of t.’ lle book or Job, as the
source of the g'. 1 i d and silver of the early
ages. From huge seams in the sides op
of the mountains was the ore dug out, and
all the evidences of this mode of mining
present themselves to the eye. How the
grooves, or channels were cut out from
such lofty heights to the base of the mqun?
tains does not appear. Immense must
have been the waste of life in prosecuting
the work.
