Matrimony
When a young tradesman in Holland goes
a-courting, the first question the young woman
asks of him is, “Are you able to pay the char
ges!” That is to 6ny in plain English, “Are
you able to support a wife when you have got
her?
What a world of misery it would prevent, if
the young women in all countries would stick
to the wisdom of that question. Not that we
would advise marrying for riches—by no means
—for we believe those who marry for that con
sideration alone, are not “joined together after
God’s holy Ordinance,” and in the sight of hea
ven they prostitute themselves for the paltry
Consideration of dollars and cents. But a cer

necessary to happiness, and they who marry
without it, tempt the fates, and have only them*
selves to blame if their path through life be rug*
ged and precipitous. It is a trite adage, “when
poverty comes in at the door, love flies out at
the window!” and it is contrary to nature to
suffer and love the cause of that suffering.—

“Hut I am Gen. Putnam,'* returned that per

“Give me the countersign, then.”
“I have forgotten it,” was the reply.
“That’s a pretty story from tho lips of Gen*
Putnam! I warrant you are a British officer,
sent over here as ft spjr!” returned Stewart,
who was well ft ware that he was addressing
Putnam, for the moon was shining brightly, but
he had the staff in his own hand, and be meant
to use it.
“I warrant you I ftm not,” said tho General,

exclaimed Stewart, at the same time cocking
his gun. “Stop w’here you are, tir I’ll make

eral disregarded his first notice) hastily raising
his gun to his shoulder, and taking a somewhat
deliberate aim.
Hold! hold!” he exclaimed.
I do hold,” Wfts the reply; “but I warn you,
once more, not to pass these lines!”
“But I am your General,” continued Putnam.
“l deny it, unless you give the countersign/*
Here the General was at fault.
“Boy,” said he, “do you not know me?”—
I am Gen. Putnam.”
“A British officer, more like. If you are
Putnam, as you say, why don’t you give me the
countersign? So sure as 1 an* my mother’s

cold meat of you. I’m a sentinel; 1 know my

the home competition in the shawl trade. The mo

It is said that alter his visit to Pittsburg, Gov. Kos
suth will proceed to Columbus, Cincinnati,SL Lonis
and New Orleans, stopping at several intermediate
places. He will then, in turn, visit Mobile, Savan
nah and Charleston. Thence he will proceed by
water to New York, ascend the Hudson to Albany.
From there, again westward, he will go to Buffalo
and Niagara Falls, and by the way of the Lake, Og-
densburg and Vermont, will repair to Boston, where
he will remain until he embarks for Europe. Such
is at present bis contemplated route, though circoia*
stances may occur to change or modify it He hopes
to be able to be in Boston in March or April, though
the exart time is uncertain, and he may be preven
ted altogether, by movements in Europe rendering,
his earlier departure necessary. . ■.
Should he pay na a visit, be will witness no
