Chinese Sugar Cane.
PURE SEED.
T HE subscriber takes great pleasure in informing
t he pla liters, farmers and gu rdenen* of the South,
that he has secured from the most reliable sources,
sor'd of this very valuable plant, the properties of
which may be briefly summed up as follows :
18t. One acre of the stalks properly cultivated,
'Will yield from 400 to 500 gallons of fine syrup,
equal to the best New Orleans, and from the same
rorlts a second crop of excellent fodder.
2d. Sown broadcast or in close drills,on land deep
ly or highly manured, it will yield thirty to fifty thou
sand pounds of superior fodder to the acre.
31. It surpasses all other plants tor soiling (feed
ing green) and fodder on account of the great amount
of eugarjgjuice which it contains, and is. greedily
eaten bv stock of all kinds.
4th. It bears repeated cuttings like Egyptian mil
let, growing off freely and rapidly after each cutting.
5tn. It stands drought much better than common
corn, retaining its green color and juiciness even af
ter the seed matures.
6th. The sqed is excellent for human food when
ground into meal, and fattens animals very speedily,
from 25 to 75 bushels can be raised on an acre.
7th. It is so certain a crop that planters may be
sure of succeeding with it as a sugar plant any
where south of Maryland and north of Mexico. If
planted early in the’Southern States, the seed will
mature and produce another crop the same season.
The seed which has been very carefully kept pure
from the original importation, will be offered in cloth
packages; each containing enough to plant half an
acre in drills, with full directions for the cultivation,
which is perfectly simple.
These packages will be forwarded per mail, free
of postage, to any address on receipt of Si 30 for
each package, when noTsent by mail, I will furnish
the packages at 81 each. Early orders ore solici
ted,as the supply of good and reliable seed are quite
limited. Applicants names will be entered in the
order in which they are received, and the seed will
be mailed as soon ns possible.
Dealers in seeds and country merchants, a liberal
discount will be made from retail rates if their orders
are received immediately. Address with plain di
rections for mailing, J. E. McMULLEN,^
