captain Herndon.
,y, .re indebted lo the Alexandria Sentinel
for the following Ivograrh.cal .ketch of the gJ-
f t,nd universally lamented commander of the
•n?.ted Central America.
r.etain William Lewis Herndon was a na-
,.„‘f Fredericksburg, Va.. and was the son of
n.hnev Herndon, Esq., a highly respected cit-
? n J\bat place. Ho was born October 25tb,
M3, sod was, therefore, at the time of his
Zh 44 years of age. 29 of which he had
•nent in the service of bis country. He entered
the nsvv as a midshipman at the age of fifteen.
About two years ago he was transferred ” 0, “
the U £>• frigate Polomac to the command of
he “George Law.” The California steamers
carrying 0. 3. mails, are required hy law to be
under the command of officers of the navy, and
Lieut. Herndon was chosen for the responsible
post. The name of the George’I .aw was, on
ly « few weeks ago, changed to that of the
Central America. •
I.ieut. Herndon was married 20 years since
lo an estimable lady of Virginia. He was of a
ili^ht figure, but of an intrepid spirit, lie was
ttgentle as ho was brave. In the navy he was
universally beloved. In all quarrels between
officers he was known as a peace-maker. He
a€ fer made an enemy. For 15 years he had
been a member of the Episcopal church. He
olten read the services on board his ship and
the humblest sailor was not committed to the
deep without the burial service being read over
hii remains by his captain.
He rendered the country gallant services in
the Florida war.
He was in the Mexican war under Commo-
dore Perry, and was selected by President Polk
to the honorable and dangerous service of ex-
ploring the Amazon.
He entered South America by the way of Pe
ru and, crossing the Andes* came to the sources
tnd branches of the Amazon, and in his barque
drifted or rowed down its immense length to
Para in Frazil’ to the delight and amazement of
hit friends, who from his long stay upon the up
per waters, had almost given him up for lost.—
Hi* admirable and instructive report to the gov
ernment of this exploration is known to every
body in this country, and it has been read and
re-read with like delight in all parts of the world.
