PERFORMANCES.
WHIRLWIND’S first race was at Atlanta, Ga.,
When a three years old, was beaten by Brown Dick
in three heats. Whirlwind winning the second heat,
the fastest in the. race. His second race was for fhe
Hutclyson stakes over' the Washington course at
Charleston, S. C. lie. was-agaln beaten’by Brown
Dick in tl*e remarkable short time of 3.42. I think

of John Howell, and a Reward whi«h has been made
by tome of the citizens of Worth county, which please
publish and forward charge to me.

DESCRIPTION,
John Howell is about fifty-five years of age, full
six feet high; quite grey, lias whiskers on the side 1
ol‘the fa<;e, very course, powder burnt iu the face,
and speaks whyning in ’ conversation, long roman
nose, dark hazel eye, sharpe chjn, his teeth pretty
shortly worn, all of which lie exhibits wjicn laughing,
swdars a great deal in conversation, was a guard at
Penitentiary several years ago, and resided in Hous
ton county, some years ago. Hois said«4o haVe re
ceived several wounds in the affray, one in the
neck—very noisey and fugaey generally. The im
pression is that he will endeavor to make his way
through Calhoun county to Alabama, as he Is related
to persons ibthkt county, oj* will probably make.his
way to Columbia County, East-Florida.
In addition to the reward of the Governor, the
citizens have subscribed$125, which'isin niy handrf,
and will be paid to the-party arresting him, on de

—the second heat being faster than the- first, it is
needless to say I threw'off the first. Being in bad
order, he was taken from the turf And turned out
till August, when he was put *iu training for the
Nashville races". He made his 1 first appearance on
that course in a sweepstake race of two hiije heats
against Invincible, and Henry Perritt, the latter a
half brother of Drown Dick, and whose time in a
two milq heat race ^ands unparallelled in Ihe an-
nalS of raping, having run a mile in the second, beat
in 1,42^ -Bets were freely made that Whirlwind
would be distanced, but so far-from it, he won the
race in two straight heats, distancing llenry Perrit
in the first—time 3.47—3.57—track heavy. The
same week he ran against little Arthur, in-a.r
two mile heats, winning in two straight heats, and
making the best, time ever made upon that course
since it was-cglahlished, more than forty years ago
—time, 8.45—3.501. The weck.following, he ran
another race of two mjlc heats, which was over the
Walnutcourse, againbeating Invincible; he was after
wards entered within the bame week, in a three mile
.heat race against Perritt and Iodine. The rider be
iug instructed to run a trailing heat, he lost it; ir
the second heat he took the lead and maintained, it
in th%thirdheat be led for the first mile and a half,
hard in hand, hut owing to the bad condition of the
track, caused by a heavy rain, which . was at tl^at
time falling, he slipped and fell, as did both of the
ofher horses, his rider being hurt by the fall was
taken from the field, and Whirlwind having ruptur
ed E leader in oqe ofhis-Tegs, has since been unable
to stand at training.—Perritt died without (
